Can I just say that in training, never give a food treat to any dog. It defies logic. Always give petting or encouragement only. All animals can improve from non-food enticement. Love is best.
My yellow lab never ceases to impress me. He’s about 8 years old and apparently just lives to please me. His responses to me are pretty much total– I use a quiet tone, or a soft hand clap (or simply patting my leg as a substitute for that) and he responds. It’s pretty amazing. As you suggest, I have never used treats to reinforce desired behavior. He gets lots of ear scratches and cheek scrunches and, to put it simply, I talk to him a lot.
In the early 1950s, my brother and I had a border collie on our Montana farm. Our father would occasionally come into the house after stopping for a minute with the dog….and would comment, “Who says dogs can’t talk?” Not me.

Labs and particularly border collies are smart and amenable. Might not work so great with, say, an afghan (dumb), bullmastiff (simply doesn’t giveashit), or wire-hair fox terrier (might understand perfectly well but thinks it’s a hoot to not comply) 🙂

Rat Terriers are very smart, great companions and have very good personalities. They are not as food orientated as Beagles.. Dogs are God’s gift to us, I think they are angels with 4 legs
Good advice, but may I say treats are simply a ‘thank you’ for a job well done and work wonders for pups that enjoy food rewards. Don’t have to give one every time, but when they do something really good, a thank you is well received by those pups who love a tasty morsel whenever they can get one and remember the one who gave it to them. Dogs are much smarter than people give credit for.

Treats are indispensable while teaching a new behavior. Especially with puppies…one weans them off and substitutes the verbal and tactile praise as they master the behavior. That’s what works for me. And the smellier the treat, the better.

Crazy “Eduction Leader” propaganda proclaims that “individual studying” and hard work to learn and develop intellectual capability is racist, that Blacks only learn as groups, that individual study and working to achieve excellence is hateful ‘ableism’. This is all designed to harm, disable and enslave Blacks, Hispanics and other inner city children. Inner city children can learn well, study, and accomplish competency if not enslaved by lack of eduction, when given the chance.
The ‘teachers unions’ which control inner city education are a decisive, organized election force in the large Democrat-misrun cities. (for example, look at Chicago, with its horrible school record…).
PDJT recognizes the harm caused by the federal Department of Education, and correctly has promised to abolish it in its currently destructive form. But PDJT and the GOP should go MUCH farther. After closing and disbanding the coercive, destructive DOE, they should promise to create a new Federal Department of Local Education Support to foster excellence by voluntary support (rather than federal coercion) at the request of K-12 schools. States and local governments could get support ONLY if the State and local funding “goes with the student” to the public or private school of parental choice. The new federal Department of Local Education Support would provide funding for student transportation, student safety, and extremely vigorous prosecution of gangs (and gang-funding of crooked Democrat politicians) which intimidate students. PDJT and the GOP should heavily publicize and promote a promise to inner city parents – specifically including Black and Hispanic parents – that their children WILL get a good education to realize their capabilities, rather than being destroyed by the traditional enslavement tactic of denial of functional education. Remind people that Abraham Lincoln (who is now hated by the ‘woke’) started the Republican Party, and the Democrat-controlled South continued eduction denial until Republican President Eisenhower forced school accessibility with troops.
PDJT should promise to finish the job os Lincoln and Eisenhower by stopping the use of eduction-denial to perpetuate innercity slavery.

I was unconstitutionally boxed out of jobs all the way back in the 90’s.
