And once again I am sitting in my dorm room, listening to this album, and looking at the cover…pretty certain it was the day before yesterday…
Mornin’ Bet. At the time I was living in a decrepit victorian just across the street from the Tri-Towers apts which was mostly occupied by sorority girls.
That old house was a real piece of work. The basement had been converted into a living space inhabited by a mysterious group of hippies who never seemed to come outside. I never met a single one, never even saw one in fact. There was a wandering hippie living out of a VW camper in the back yard where my friend who nominally “managed” the house worked on VW Beatles.
I rented a room from him for $40 which let me walk to class.
At the time my daily driver was a resplendent Maserati Sebring with red leather interior and polished 16in Borrani wire wheels which I had imported from Switzerland. Not wanting to park it on the street, I parked it in the front yard next to the porch. The juxtaposition of that handmade Italian sports car in front of that crumbling hippie-centric old house made for quite a sight. Sure wish I’d taken a photo.
Oh I wish you had too!! There is a Brit car aficionado in this house who would have loved to have seen it. Austin was anything but congruous. A real mish mash of the weird and unexpected. I doubt I would have turned a hair had I seen it…and perhaps I did…
Because although I wasn’t in a sorority, I did live 3 years in those Tri Towers, ’69-’72 (Hardin Towers…Mrs Hardin was a regimental seargeant😁).
If that’s when you lived in your palatial digs, who knows?? We could have been two ships which passed. Fascinating to think of. 💕
Could have sat on the same front porch and had a cup of tea or a lemonade.
Or, given the times, thoroughly altering your state-of-consciousness. 🙂

I was there in ’72-73 when I moved to a bit nicer place on W34th. If you walked out the Tri-Towers front doors and looked west our house was the old victorian on the corner. I think you could see it or at least the front yard. Unless the Maser was there, it was a pretty nondescript old house, one of many in the neighborhood. Selling that car went a long way toward paying my overhead.
That was a wonderful time to be in Austin and UT. There, I met some of the smartest people I’d ever encountered . . . and found that with a little work, I could hold my own with them. Real halcyon days.
Well, cling on to those memories, my friend. The older I get the more I find dipping into the well where I store them. Doubt that well will ever run dry.😊
I prefer to think of my recollections as lore. I think that adds importance to otherwise very ordinary life experiences. 🙂

Ben there myself, Joe, . . . so many times over the 18 years. The job just falls on us. But, then, how can we not do it? To not be there is just unthinkable. I think of all the times she was there there for me. More than a few of these were make-or-break and yet, and yet, she was there. Watching her decline was hard, but absolutely knowing that I was going to be at her side was hugely comforting. I knew what I had to do.
That person in that bed is our life partner, perhaps our soul-mate.
For me, night’s end s a glass of good bourbon —in this case Henry McKenna Kentuckey whisky. Be well, friend.

Thank you, Bet. Responsibility often becomes isolating an lonely at times. One of the major causes of death for caregivers is depression related suicide. I’ve had three depressive episodes since my wife passed. Fortunately, I have some knowledge about affective disorders and so I was confident that the depression would pass . . . as it finally did fairly recently. The danger is when depressed people can’t see any way out. That’s when suicide often happens.
Even CS Lewis, he of strong faith, described the depth of his despair on losing his wife, Joy…his moments after when all he believed was tested.
I don’t understand what people do who do not believe in that loving Power, so much higher than themselves when they lose someone they love. No spiritual Net. It’s not hard to fathom why so many take the road out which you describe.

3/6/2023 – For not shall be impossible with God every thing spoken
Luke 1:18-20,34-38 “And Zachariah said to the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife advanced in days. And answering, the angel said unto him, I am Gabriel, who stand before God; and I was sent to announce to you these glad tidings: and, behold, you shall be silent, and not able to speak, till the day that these things shall take place, because you did not believe my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season . . . But Mary said to the angel, How shall this be, seeing that I know not a man? And answering, the angel said to her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you; for this reason the born Holy shall be called Son of God. And, behold, your kinswoman Elisabeth, she also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For not shall be impossible with God every thing spoken (every word). And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it to me according to the thing spoken of you (your word). And the angel departed from her.”
For a long time, I always thought that Zachariah’s and Mary’s responses were about the same, and had it a little difficult to understand why the angel Gabriel would answer Zachariah by taking away his ability to speak; and Mary he talked to completely different. But it occurs to me, that they really were very different responses, that came from very different kinds of attitudes. Zachariah was scared when he saw the angel, and reacted to the word spoken to him with skepticism; and he asked for a sign for confirmation, because he didn’t believe it. Mary however completely believed what was said, and simply wanted to know how that would work, seeing that she had not known a man.
Also it is important to note, how the angel Gabriel (a servant and messenger sent right from the throne of God), answered each one. As a servant on an errand for his Master, it was not for him to act outside the mission he was sent to do. His response then to Zachariah’s unbelief, was not anything vindictive, as many might suppose when they read this; but it was in fact the sign that Zachariah had asked for, “By what shall I know that these things shall be?” Probably not what he was expecting (if he even knew what he should expect), but it was the answer from God, fitting to his unbelief; “You will be silent and unable to speak till these things are done, because you did not believe my words, which shall be done in their season.”
Zachariah was the one God had specifically sent him to, to tell him that his prayers are heard, and to announce glad tidings to him, that the answer to his prayers was something far greater and more important than he would ever have thought. Now it was said just prior to these things happening, that Zachariah and Elizabeth were both righteous, and that God counted them blameless in their walk; and it was God’s love for them, that waited to reveal His answer to their prayers, because the son they were asking for was going to be John the Baptist, the forerunner to their Messiah, foretold in Isaiah and Malachi.
When the old man saw the angel and heard what he was saying, he didn’t believe it, and asked for a sign. This wasn’t anything unusual; for many in the Bible had done likewise; Samson’s parents, Gideon, Hezekiah, and so on. The part, I think, that Zachariah maybe didn’t get right; was that in those who are mentioned in the Scriptures, it was not out of unbelief, but for confirmation following their faith in the word. Zachariah’s was out of skepticism, saying, Show me a reason why I should believe you. The only response God gives His saints who ask Him things in this way, is that they will not be able to speak before these things are done. So, the angel Gabriel gave him a sign from God fitting to his unbelief, and for instructing all of us in such matters: I am sent to you from God to announce to you these glad tidings; and you will be silent and unable to speak till these things are all come to pass; because you did not believe my words, which shall be done in their season.
Six months later, Gabriel is sent to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin named Mary, of the daughters of David; who was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, also of the house of David.When Gabriel appears to her, he greets her, Hail, highly favored, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women! Somewhat startled and wondering what kind of greeting this should be, the angel continues,
“Fear not, Mary: for you have found favor with God. And, behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name Yeshu’a (Jesus). He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the LORD God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David: and He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end.” (Luke 1:30-33)
and Mary believes what she is being told; and pondering in her heart, she asks the logical question, How is God going to do this, seeing that I know not a man? So, just as Gabriel answered Zachariah’s request for a sign, he also granted Mary’s request for understanding: “The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow you, (there, that’s how God is going to do it!): for this reason the born holy shall be called Son of God:” and for your encouragement it should excite you to know, that your kinswoman Elizabeth, she who was called barren, she also has conceived a son in her old age; for not shall be impossible with God every thing spoken.”And the godly young woman answered, “Behold the handmaid of the LORD; be it to me according to your word.”
These two, Zachariah and Mary; both loved and blessed in an extraordinary way from God; are signs for instruction to us. Besides each one’s example, of either believing or not believing; and that the word spoken was to come to pass, howsoever they received it; (the difference being made in what kind of sign they would be, by whether they believed or not); what was done in them, was in a certain sense a foreshadowing of what was to be done in all of God’s redeemed elect in Christ. We are all known and loved of God. He sees how we seek to be righteous, and walk blameless before Him in all our ways. The Lord remembers all our prayers, even ones that have been from many years ago; and He has plans how to answer them in ways we wouldn’t ever dare to imagine. All that He has spoken concerning us, He is bringing to pass in the perfect time. Unbelief makes us silent and unable to speak about what God is doing, until it has already been done.
We are highly favored, and the Lord is with us, and we are blessed among all the people of the world. We too have the Holy Spirit come upon us, and the power of the Highest has overshadowed us; putting new life from above into us, that is nothing connected with man. Just as Mary conceived and gave birth to God come in the flesh; so have we conceived by faith, and have been born again from above; so that we should be called children of God.The born holy in us is the reason why we are called children of God. And we are blessed who believe; for there shall be a performance of all that the Lord has made known to us.

This was written by Richard Strauss about that moment between life, death, and resurrection into the holy presence of our Lord and Saviour.
It is called “Death and Transfiguration”.
When he himself had reached that point, those around him recounted that he said, with a peace about him, that it was just as he imagined it.
And as I love that comforting poem, now along with your condolences to Frank and Zoe’s devoted daughter, this work is a reassuring one as well…knowing that the passing of the body is not the end, but merely a pass through for souls to another existence we all hope and pray for.

Paul is speaking of the things that might seem likely to separate or wedge in between the saint and the love of God; but the remarkable thing is that nothing CAN wedge in between the love of God and the saint. These things can and do come in between the devotional exercises of the soul and God and separate individual life from God; but none of them is able to wedge in between the love of God and the soul of the saint. The bedrock of our Christian faith is the unmerited, fathomless marvel of the love of God exhibited on the Cross of Calvary, a love we never can and never shall merit. Paul says this is the reason we are more than conquerors in all these things, super-victors, with a joy we would not have but for the very things which look as if they are going to overwhelm us.
The surf that distresses the ordinary swimmer produces in the surf-rider the super-joy of going clean through it. Apply that to our own circumstances, these very things – tribulation, distress, persecution, produce in us the super-joy; they are not things to fight. We are more than conquerors through Him IN all these things, not in spite of them, but in the midst of them. The wealthy Nabal refused to give food to David and his men, even after they had helped protect his shepherds and his flocks. David was on his way to wreak vengeance upon Nabal and his household when he was met by Nabal’s wife, Abigail. This wise and discerning woman’s soft-spoken way (and the food she brought) convinced David to think of his future and his service to the Lord and allow God to deal with Nabal in His own way (1 Samuel 25).
David’s inner emotional anger almost led him to give an outward expression of wrath. Abigail’s soft words diffused the situation. It is the wise person who speaks softly in tense situations. He or she knows when to speak and when to be silent. The fool, however, does not control their emotions and seems always ready with a response whether it is appropriate or not.
Dr. H.A. Ironside said, “It is impossible for man to estimate aright the power for good or evil that lies in the tongue. A kindly, gracious word will often disarm a most ill-tempered and wrathful man; while a sharp, cutting remark has frequently separated friends dear to each other for years.” A little grace and forbearance, mixed with love, may be the softness that is needed.
In a nation that seems to have forgotten what it means to have a gentle spirit, and where wisdom is met with foolish words that add fuel to the flame, stand firm with grace and love. Pray that local, state, and national officials would be led by God with wisdom to diffuse heated situations and bring resolutions quietly and safely.

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ.
