Hot air balloons don’t have solar panels mounted at their bottom and given the photographs shown on the media that whole solar array on the bottom could easily hold steerable GPS computer thingies in it with cameras and all sorts of probing instrumentalities on that array.
I was just surprised that China didn’t simply say this balloon is one in a series of many such balloons they were testing over the planet for their scientists to learn what they needed to incorporate into their upcoming moon exploration adventure.

This one flew near the anti-ballistic missile base in Alaska which is mainly designed to intercept a VERY limited attack from North Korea which would almost certainly be an EMP attack for reasons I have previously detailed. It would also serve to intercept a limited attack by China. Why limited? Because if only a few missiles were sent our way, a full scale “launch them or lose them” counterstrike would not be made by us.
And on the “satellites could do the same thing,” the Chinese photoreconnaissance satellites are 300 or so miles up, but from 12 miles up, a properly equipped balloon could see “cat’s whickers” according to an expert on that topic.
HOWEVER, all that said, because of the relatively low altitude of THIS balloon (60k feet versus 120k feet, the usual maximum), any EMP attack would have VERY limited radius of effectiveness.

The larger point is not what this balloon was or wasn’t. That is water under the bridge. The larger point is that, if you believe the regime’s own words about what occurred, it took four days for the C in C to order it shot down, and then another four for the US military to actually do it.
There are no good explanations for that sequence of events. Either Biden ordered a non -threatening balloon shot down for optics only, thereby threatening foreign relations, or he let a real threat sail into the heart of the US to save the Blinken trip.
Then either the US military delayed action for days against a non-threatening balloon after being ordered to take it down even though they
could do so easily (as demonstrated), or it knew the only way to take it down for public safety reasons was to do so over water where the winds would take any fallout (of any kind) into the Atlantic. Which means they should have shot it down in the Aleutians.
There are no good explanations for the conduct of Biden and Milley and the US military. Period.

Details: The Financial Times writes that Kyiv has obtained “very solid intelligence of intent” by Russia to launch a new attack.
The Russian offensive will likely aim to capture the entire Donbas region and may begin in the west of Luhansk Oblast, near the cities of Kreminna and Lyman, where Russia has been assembling forces for several weeks.
The Financial Times also notes that Russia is building up its troops in the south of Donetsk Oblast, with additional forces being deployed to villages around occupied Mariupol.
According to the Financial Times, Russia’s goal is to launch the offensive before Ukraine receives Western tanks and weapons. [actually, I suspect that has little to do with it since a few tens of armored vehicles with poorly trained or untrained crews won’t mean much in a war where many thousands of armored vehicles have already been destroyed – W]
I’m quite sure that Russian military security is as airtight as it must be. Also, they know the value of deception. They know that every move they make is being continuously monitored by satellites. But, when and from where will the actual blow fall? You’ll know the day it happens. And, as was in the case of their initial advances toward Kiev, any of them could be a feint.
Russia at this point really does not have to care about “Western tanks and weapons.” It has already demonstrated its ability to blow them up with ease.
Supposedly, we’ve been providing Ukraine with intel all along and our electronic intelligence capabilities are extremely advanced. I’ve read that the Russians were using unencrypted radios. Also, a recent, deadly strike by the Ukrainians on a Russian troop concentration in a building being used as a barracks was enabled by the use of cell phones by the Russian troops.

Sorry, it’s selfishness. Take a look at which young people aren’t having children. It includes lots of young professionals making more a year than people much older than them who had children on less.
I’m surrounded by millennials and older Gen Z who say they don’t want children in my workplace and every one of them makes six figures. They take frequent expensive vacations, carry expensive phones, bought expensive condos/townhouses – even single family homes when married to another professional.
They don’t want to waste money on kids that can be spent on themselves.
In some of my environmental classes the teachers told us to have no or one children to ‘save’ the environment. When I pointed out immigration legal & illegal I became a pariah. That is the achilles heel of the Environmental fake & fraudulent movement.

I just found out that my Blue Cross/ MEDICARE RX /AZ premium has almost doubled. New info: An illegal alien with a fake Social Security card, who has worked just 40 hours-that’s all-, can qualify for the same RX plan and supposedly pay the same premium AS I DO. With all of the NGO’s set up to help illegal aliens,I strongly doubt they pay the same premium, but are subsidized somehow. AZ Blue just went through comprehensive overhaul of their online payment system.

If the illegal is 65-up, with apparently no income and not qualifying for SS based on 40 quarters of wages/income, then other programs would take care of their medication. Medicaid would be the payor of last resort.
I presume you have a Medicare supplement plan and don’t use Part D for medications. Supplement plans are, like the private insurance I bought for years when self-employed, free market and generally inflationary. I was a BC/BS subscriber for decades until they priced me to the marketplace with exorbitant policy premiums after ACA started.
That was the point I made the decision to get out of the system and start fighting it instead of funding it. Enough is enough. The country is broken. No sense in feeding my own enemies.
It might have to do with Biden cutting funds for Medicare Advantage plans by $5billion. Basically, they have reduced the rates they will pay to the insurers by that amount so, it follows that they would have to raise premiums to cover the shortfall.
