On January 2nd, the entire FAA system in Florida went offline after some kind of technical glitch that screwed up the works. All flights into and out of Florida were temporarily halted.
Interestingly enough, earlier today the entire FAA system had the same “glitch.”
As noted by Fox News: “The travel chaos was caused by the failure of the FAA’s Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system, which alerts pilots and other personnel about airborne issues and other delays at airports across the country. More than 1,000 flights were canceled in the U.S., and more than 6,700 more flights in the U.S. were delayed, as of 11:30 a.m. ET. FAA investigators are continuing to search for the cause of the outage.” (link)
According to White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain, Joe Biden “was briefed by Secretary Pete Buttigieg early this morning. Biden directed DOT/FAA to restore the system quickly and safely, and to determine causes. Secretary Pete will provide Biden an update later this morning.”
Brilliant plan by the White House pointing the two top men to the problem, top men.
Because, well, without telling DOT/FAA to “restore the system quickly and safely” they may not have realized the need to restore the system, and secondarily could, according to the emphasis from the White House, have done a slow and unsafe restoration.

Air Missions? When did they make that change? Was there any official notice (NOTAM) given? According to the FAA Acronyms and Abbreviations website page, last updated in March of 2022, NOTAM is still Notice to Airmen.
NOTAM used to mean NOTICE TO AIRMEN.

I did enough flying for my last job and for too many years before that. I think I’ve used up my allotted “lives” to risk flying with a rotted out system.
I haven’t flown since the 90’s. I hate it. I have driven cross country several times and much prefer it.

Same here, but it wasn’t for safety reasons. I grew tired of the airlines’ “doing you a favor by allowing you to fly on their plane” attitude.
My father passed one month after 9/11 and I had to catch the overnight to Detroit. I was aware that the airline industry offers what they call a “bereavement fare” so I called a certain Fort Worth-based major airline and tried to book a flight. They wanted $600 so I inquired about the bereavement fare. I was told that in order to qualify for that fare, I would have to book two weeks in advance. I apologized for my father to be so thoughtless as not to give advance notice of his passing, and hung up. I then went across the street and got the same flight from Northwest Airlines for about $250.
That was the last time I did, and ever will, fly with the airlines.

As a professional aviator it is my opinion that the US system is (for now) superior to any other. The people in charge are apparently trying to change that.
Since the formation of the TSA, and then the COVID mask/vaccine nonsense, air travel became one of the biggest hassles that I faced. My job required frequent trips between my Midwest home and Houston, Texas.
TSA is external. They don’t run the system that moves airplanes.
Everyone should realize they implemented the 5G before the planes were capable of excepting it. They would rather not tell you the truth because, you know, that money thing.

Planes being grounded was on the news immediately before I went to work.
But while I was going to work there were more planes visible in the sky than normal.
Seeing more planes was weird given what the news said, so I checked after I arrived at work and supposedly planes were still grounded.
Is there some other system that planes can use that would explain seeing more planes when they shouldn’t be there?

That is NOT true, the radar and all the other systems were working. The planes you saw had probably already taken off and so were allowed to continue to their destination.
In the good old days before all the technological “advances” planes flew just fine without automated NOTAMS back in the dinosaur age of the 80’s and 90’s, go figure. Pilots still got briefings, any updates were transmitted to the pilot by the ATC.
A word of caution “Monkeywerx” gets all of his data from publicly available data. What is publicly available is what the government decides. When the government has operations, or at least operations they don’t want advertised then that data is not publicly available.
Lots of unanswered questions about what happened today and the other event referenced by Sundance. If you know how the air traffic system works and if you are familiar with the redundancy of the systems, it really doesn’t make a lick of sense.
Lots of possibilities, could be nefarious but I think it’s a little simpler. See statements by Senator Cantwell. Senate currently working on reauthorization plan. 5 year modernization plan coming up before the end of the fiscal year.

I wasn’t referencing NOTAM, simply the entire system to include all the vitals you mentioned, tres importante, were they downed in toto those airborne will stack up until appropriate restorative or substitional measures are taken.

The NOTAM system has worked fine for decades. Until today I’ve never had a single issue with it and I’ve been a pilot since 1989, professionally since 1999.
Do you live near a major airport or along a route between major airports?
Perhaps you saw planes maintaining holding patterns, because they could neither land nor fly their assigned routes.
Also note that the “glitch” occurred in the early in the day, so East Coast airports would have been disproportionately affected.

As a “software professional” myself, I will assume that the other “software professionals” who are right now dealing with this problem know exactly what they are doing.
Let the record also show that the software system which they maintain has never(!) before experienced any such of a failure. I think that this is a statement as to their professionalism. (How very easy it is to “take such things for granted …” On the surface, “computer software looks so easy.”)
I’m not(!) interested in “loose talk” about “hackers,” or “half-a-world-away foreign nations,” because “Occam’s Razor” teaches me not to look for such explanations first. (I have participated in several such forensic analyses, and this has never been the true explanation.)
Unfortunately, this is an extremely-elaborate real-time software system, and when any such systems might “fail,” they unfortunately might fail “quite badly.” Now, let us give them time to work through the problem, then to analyze the “lessons learned.”
Do not throw anyone under the bus. First, get the system working again. Then, analyze why it – for the very first time since deployment – somehow failed. Devise appropriate systemic changes, and then implement and deploy them.
FYI: We should also(!) presume that any such system was designed to be fault tolerant. That it would be designed to actively look for failure-points anywhere else in the system. “If anything, anywhere, appears to be ‘less than certain,’ even though we do not yet know ‘why,’ ground the planes or do not allow them to take off.”
I couldn’t agree more but using your words as written, provides no confidence in a system such as 5G being implemented before the airline industry actually had an opportunity to really pu it to the test.
Now, imagine what you just wrote, explaining that to someone like me just before I boarded a plane. Don’t you think it would be easier to say… “We’re working on it!”

Agree Mike. I’m sure a team is already pouring through the data. The system recorded everything down to every keystroke and every line of code. It may take time but they’ll figure it out.
They are in the process of bringing new systems online, so that might be part of what happened. Before any system is launched it goes through rigorous testing, including compatibility. Hard to imagine this big of a failure.
The comments suggest incompetence. Let me dissuade you. Incompetence means someone should resign. Purposeful intent means someone should go to prison.

The system would have never ordered ground holds if it were just the NOTAMs that were down. Not a critical element.
Those are normally for preflight plannning and en route information.
The ATIS system advises pilots of the most important and current information at terminal destinations.

Important enough for ground holds because of the number of key areas affected. An excerpt from one of the emails FAA sent to operators:
Operational Impact:
The United States NOTAM Office (USNOF), ARTCC Flight Data, NOTAM SWIM Subscribers, Public Users, Airport Operators, Operations Control Center (OCC), Flight Service, and Department of Defense (DoD) users may be unable to either access, view, or process NOTAMs, Flight Plans, Special Use Airspace (SUA), or Weather products through the applications and services listed above.
It becomes a serious safety issue when you can’t file or access flight plans or access timely weather information.
If the system is screwed up then runway closures, inop approach systems, etc. are not disseminated to the crews. This is a no-go item for me. No NOTAM no departure. Period.
Without NOTAMs I cannot safely dispatch and I wouldn’t try.

Every morning I wake up and head over to my computer to read the day’s selection of information choices (CTH being one of the half dozen or so choices).
And for about 45 minutes to an hour-before having to attend to the day’s obligations-I read and wonder, “How much longer will this-or can this-insanity go on.”
As the father of modern economists, Adam Smith, is quoted as saying, “There’s a great deal of ruin in a nation.” By which he meant that it takes an awful lot of bungling by political leaders to bring down a powerful and prosperous state.
All that to say, I don’t know about y’all, but I’ll be glad when we hit bottom as all this ruining is getting depressing-not to mention dangerous as hell.
