So…will the senate allow the railroad workers to strike? RIP anyone on city water, including me. We have a life straw but this is ridiculous.
What makes me angry about this is that what the workers are asking for is perfectly reasonable. Things like “sick time.” If you are driving a miles-long train at eighty miles an hour down a main line, I don’t want you to be feverish or sneezing. I don’t want you to be tired because they’re working you too hard. I want you to always be at the top of your game, every time you sit down in that cab to haul millions of dollars’ worth of freight (or, passengers …) from one place to another.
The railroads can easily afford to “do right by” these workers, who are after all the irreplaceable “stars of their sky.” But they appear to be too stubborn to do so.
It’s really not a question of money. It’s a question of management stupidity. They should know better.
Railroad workers get plenty of sick time already and have incredible fringe benefits. They want a 24% pay raise. Have you ever gotten one that big?

I’ve had 2 family members who were career long employees of the railroads. They are both retired with excellent pensions and healthcare and live much better than most retirees that I know.
California Joe: From what I read, the raise would be over a 5-year period and affected railroad workers have been without a contract or raise for at least two years.
Just about as long the SS folks who paid into the shit for many many working years had to wait for a tiny 2% increase. Forgive me if I don’t feel bad for them and their crying. Look at the politicians and their increases. And the politicians absolutely DO NOTHING to earn the wages and bennies they get.
SS COLA increase is 8.7% coming this January.
Which is going to be consumed by higher food, energy and fuel costs that are continuously rising. So, yeah, it’s a cost of living increase that’s already nullified.
And most assuredly, a rise in the cost of Medicare!

30 years ago, SS took $100 out of my paycheck. Ignore the ponzi scam b.s. distraction about how “that $100 was used to pay beneficiaries back then, just as current workers paying in today, pays for your benefits.”
Bottom line is, my gross paycheck was $800, but the check was for $700, with the employer sending the $100 to SS.
The purchasing power of the $ has gone DOWN by 75 percent.
So, in effect they are taking $100, 30 years ago, and now giving me $25 (in terms of purchasing power).
And we’re bitching about an 8.7 percent COLA, with 30 percent inflation?
We already BEEN screwed, and now they are trying to finish us off, as unproductive “useless eaters”.
My brother lives in a senior housing apartment. Amazingly one week after the SS cola increase was announced he got a letter from the apartment management that rent was increasing 9% effective Jan 1.

This always happens after the COLA raises to SS and SI seniors or disabled living in section 8 or government subsidized housing. My husband’s grandma lived in a senior apartment for lower income people and they always took her little raise by raising her rent. Usually it’s done the first of the year or whenever the tenant’s rent is renewed. With the high costs of groceries, gas, medicine, healthcare and utilities they don’t really benefit much from these paltry raises.

Medicare is slowly being gamed out of existence. It’s already the equivalent of a bronze plan on ACA. 20% copays and out-of-pocket caps of somewhere between $6500 and $8500 a year. They are giving back roughly $5 of last year’s $36 hike.
At least the calls at 5 and 6 o’clock in the morning have stopped for this year’s open enrollment season. Half a dozen calls a day from phone banks, seniors some very old or very sick or very lonely having to negotiate a sales barrage and a maze of coverages. It’s a travesty what they’ve done for a program that was supposed to protect the elderly.

Everything in life is a gamble, and this certainly isn’t for everyone,..but.
For those on SS, have you given serious consideration to NOT getting (and paying for) Medicare part B, which is the part you pay for, and which you CAN ‘OPT OUT’ of?
I know a couple, both on SS who have done this.
The same clinic they go to for SOME, albeit limited medical care, which they would be going to IF they were on part B, is the one they go to now.
The clinic has a “sliding fee scale” for those with NO medical insurance, and which a couple making $80,000/year can qualify for.
This couple, both on SS, have around $25,000/yeat income. They pay $40 per visit, and lab tests cost is capped at $30, no matter how many tests the Dr orders.
They need ONE expensive medication, they signed up for a program with the manufacturer, and again because they are on a limited fixed income, and HAVE NO MEDICAL INSURANCE, they get the meds for free.
They need 2 appointments/year, with lab tests before, in order to get the Rx renewed.
So, costs them $140/YEAR, TOTAL for their medical care, as opposed to paying $350/ MONTH, for Medicare part B, with all of its co-pays, deductibles and BS.
IF they have a heart attack, etc and so are admitted to the hospital, they are STILL on Medicare part A (Hospitalisation) which costs you nothing, and which you can’t opt out of.
And, in that event Medicare pays 80 percent if the bill, and the patient is responsible for the balance.
However, with their income, the Hospitals collection agency probably wouldn’t pursue it.
They own no property, and do not use credit.
For those seriously struggling to get by on SS, its something to consider.
Given what we now know about the medical system, gotta ask yourself WHY are you paying for Medicare part B, WHAT are you actually getting for your $175/month, are there OTHER ways of getting the same product/result?
Because I have assets to protect. End of story.

The folks who are driving for this to be “federal” are those which work in certain “local” areas. And, quite a few of them are very-simply being screwed. As I said before, they have a legitimate “beef” and deserve to be heard. And, fairly accommodated.
Also: If you are driving a train, or maintaining the tracks upon which those trains run, I firmly believe that you should be “extremely well compensated.” Because millions of dollars and uncountable public safety rests in your hands, every single day.

I work for one the class 1 railroads and I can tell you that these guys do NOT get sick time and are subject to a point based attendance policy that penalizes one for taking time off due to illness.
Regarding the 24% pay raise…I haven’t seen an increase in pay for nearly 4yrs.
I think they are trying to get their workforce down to a driver less train…AI…..For what ever reason this plays into it.
We were on the Auto-train from Lorton, Va to Sanford, Fl earlier this week. The train blew two engines during that trip. The Lorton location only had 2 drivers to load the cars creating a massive back-up upon arrival, also causing a multi-hour delay for departure. The ticket price included dinner with multiple seatings beginning at 5pm with the final seating scheduled for 9 pm. The 5pm seating didn’t go as expected – with only partial meals served nearly 2 hours late with the excuse they were training a new chef/cook.
Later dining seating was cancelled and only those passengers who requested a meal had one delivered to their room/seat.
The train stopped in the wee hours of the morning in Fayetteville, NC for what was supposed to be a brief shift change and refueling stop. Several hours later we learned the train blew its engines delaying us even further.
Scheduled arrival in Sanford was 9:30 in the morning, instead arrived we at dinner time 4:30 pm.
This further upset the schedule for the passengers waiting to board this auto-train for the trip back north to Lorton, VA. after the long Thanksgiving day weekend.
Since trains share rail tracks and this creates quite a scheduling and safety issue.
Unloading the vehicles in Sanford was done much more efficiently since I counted at least 12 drivers to unload over 300 vehicles instead of the two that showed up in Lorton to load the vehicles.
Rumor was the challenges may have been related to the union contract issues and they wanted to send a message to the public of difficulties yet to come should they not come to agreement prior to strike.

I have many stories of being a deep draft ocean shipping agents with the stevedores who get paid a full 8 hours to discharge a ship and pretty much control the show on how fast or slow a vessel gets unloaded and sent back on its way. Most of the time we would wait for them to arrive then watch them sprint to get the vessel discharged in the fastest time possible, usually no more than 1-2 hours max). On one NYK ship I was agent on with the new Lexus LS 400’s, the trunk release was below the e-brake and 17 cars had their trunk totalled out on the low overhead. It was not fun for the next 2 years having multiple NYK employees shadowing every single discharge operation(usually 2-3 witnesses). The Japanese took damage to their cargo very serious.

That was when our country was divided by some arbitrary standard of who could work and who could not. The same goes for small businesses. They had their livelihoods destroyed because of “science”.

Having rented a UHaul earlier this week, we opted to refuel the tank prior to returning it. Two service stations had pumps with orange bags tied to the gas pump nozzle – one with no fuel available at all. Both were located on South Florida Ave in Lakeland, Florida.
Given recent reminders of potential diesel shortage on the horizon – I thought this worth posting.

On the way south from NC to FL post-Thanksgiving, I stopped at gas stations in north Florida off I-95– at one Exxon station ALL the pumps were not working, and at one Shell station the lines were ridiculous and some of the pumps were not working. I’ve never encountered this before.

I encountered an oddity at widely dispersed consumer (not truck stop) stations across Oregon and California….. diesel pumps that operated as slow as molasses. Literally pumping less than a gallon a minute. Never seen that before and I’d been to those same stations many, many times over the years traveling that route.
One nasty negative of that slow fill rate was the pump auto-stop devices weren’t working and, yeah, you guessed it, if one wasn’t right on top of it, out the filler neck went the fuel.

I ask this because as far as I know the US Debt Ceiling/Limit stands at $31.381 Trillion dollars voted on last December in 2021 when they raised it by $2.5 Trillion dollars. But the Treasury Department’s ‘Debt to the penny’ site shows that we went over that limit on 11/30 with a current debt of $31.423 Trillion dollars.
