In a very odd and yet scant set of details, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, was attacked shortly after 2am by a hammer wielding suspect from Berkeley named David DePape (42).
DePape has been identified as a nudist/activist from the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco. Speaker Pelosi was not home at the time; she was in Washington DC.
(San Francisco) – […] San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said Depape, 42, is now facing charges of attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary and several other additional felonies stemming from the incident after 2 a.m.
Scott said police responded to a wellbeing check and found Depape and Paul Pelosi, 82, struggling over a hammer. He said officers then witnessed Depape pull the hammer away from Pelosi and “violently assaulted” him.
Officers then immediately tackled Depape, disarmed him and took him into custody, while requesting emergency backup and rendering medical aid at the scene. The motive for the attack remains under investigation. (read more)

So for those of you scoring at home, based on the statements released today from the SF Chief of Police, the police WITNESSED the attack (e.g. they were in the room, most likely because they were already working at the house as security), then ALLOWED the hammer attack to proceed until they broke it up moments later.
Thus, both participants were already known to the SF police who were working at security at the house that night.
There is a simple explanation for this, but since this is a family website I’ll let you draw your own conclusions. But this is the only one which fits the facts as released earlier today by the SF Chief of Police.
Disregard the “wellness check” BS, they added that in the last couple of hours. The SF police were already there working security.
Interesting theory …
The police chief said they got a call for an urgent well-being check and when officers arrived at the Pelosi home DePape and Pelosi were engaged and both had their hands on the hammer, and then DePape wrested the hammer away from Pelosi and started hitting Pelosi. I suppose this can all happen extremely quickly and I am in no way accepting that officers stood there and allowed the attack to proceed.
I think we don’t know who contacted police. I theorized in the presidential thread that Pelosi might have been on a phone call with someone and the person on the other end of the call notified police. That would explain why it was a well-being check instead of a burglary.
We won’t know until they release some info about who placed the call.
