Russia’s army is not stupid, nor is it filled with deserters nor “barely trained conscripts.”

The very worst thing that you can do in any conflict is to typecast or under-estimate your enemy when he is more powerful and equipped than you are. Telling stories about him may make good press, but it will not make the stories true.

“according to the U.K. MoD.” The UK MoD is a sworn enemy of Russia. Information from them about the Russian military is pure propaganda. It is the equivalent of getting information about how to care for one’s health from the CDC. Sorry, not buying it. 

I believe what the U.K. MoD says exactly zero percent of the time.

Russia isn’t sending troops to the frontlines with a few days of training. They’ve stated that it will take about a month of training before they actually deploy any of the mobilized forces and, perhaps more convincingly, that just isn’t anything like how they’ve fought this war so far. Russia has had fewer soldiers in the battlefield than Ukraine throughout this conflict and Putin and Russian Defense Minister Shoigu have repeatedly stated that it has taken them as long as it has (about six months from initial invasion to control and annexation of approx. 20% of Ukraine, containing the majority of Ukraine’s historically native-Russian-speaking/ethnic Russian /pro-Russian population) because going faster would have resulted in more deaths, both for Russian military and for civilians.

Russia has used an elastic strategy where they simply don’t “stand and fight” in intense ground battle scenarios that would lead to heavy losses, not even when such battles seem ultimately winnable. Instead, they retreat in these situations, usually only temporarily, and rely on their air and especially artillery superiority to inflict mass casualties from a distance and eventually move in to take disputed territory once there’s no longer much resistance. This is the strategy they’ve employed throughout the past six months, with the only situation that necessitated more ground warfare being the taking of Mariupol and elimination or capture of most of the Azov Battalion, which had been trapped in that city and made what amounted to a last stand there. Because the Azov fighters used residents as human shields and took over civilian apartments, school buildings, hospitals, etc., Russia was unable to use its airpower and artillery to nearly the same extent and basically had to fight the Azov guy in the streets in order to take the city.

It’s notable, however, that even in Mariupol, most of the actual street-level warfare involved the well-trained and battle-hardened Donetsk militia and the Chechen units, which are known for being relentless and highly effective in that exact type of situation. Another Russian policy throughout this conflict has been to provide substantial support to the regions fighting to be independent from Ukraine (and to join Russia officially, as of earlier today) but to limit Russian military front line exposure. Basically, the deal Russia made was that it would join the fight and do what it could to support these regions, including even some involvement of Russian soldiers and special forces in direct battle, but that, for the most part, the people of these regions had to lead the fight for their own future, as they had been doing for the past eight years (but only now with far superior equipment, training and, as mentioned, SOME Russian involvement in the battlefield itself). This seems very reasonable to me, as I think it does to everyone involved. Russia is putting a lot on the line to help these regions and it is contributing substantially to the fight, but it still expects the soldiers from the actual breakaway regions to be out front in the battle and take on a heavy share of the risk.

I find it difficult to imagine Russia would suddenly and dramatically change course from what has been a mostly efficient and well-planned six months of combat that has strategically minimized casualties while leading to the successful annexation of most of the ethnic Russian/pro-Russian Ukrainian territory, amounting to about 20% of Ukraine, as of this morning. Why would they suddenly start throwing poorly trained, newly mobilized soldiers to the wolves NOW, when they were quite careful not to fight this way for the past six months? Since I’m not there, I can’t say for sure what is or isn’t true, but that seems very unlikely to me.

As far as the numbers fleeing Russia and the ethnic and class composition of soldiers called up, that seems even more obviously false to me. Anyone who has followed sources that reported on the exact order from Putin (or who simply watched the 14-minute speech from Putin announcing partial mobilization, which, like all his speeches, has a Kremlin-approved English translation, which is widely available in either dubbed or transcript form) knows that this PARTIAL mobilization order was VERY limited. It is not a draft and Russia is not randomly conscripting people. Russia does have a draft, even in peacetime, in which young Russian men (usually 18 to 20) serve one year in the armed forces or performing some type of national service. After finishing this service, they automatically are considered reserves until the age out. In this instance, Putin called for the mobilization of approx. 250K reservists, which is ONE PERCENT of Russia’s total reserve force. Of course, many people technically still on the reserve-force rolls are no longer young or fit enough to serve or have moved out of the country, died, have mental problems, etc. So perhaps the real number is more like half the technical count, which would mean this order called up about 2% of reservists into active duty. The order exempted ALL STUDENTS (college, grad school, technical schools… ALL students… Putin was very clear about this), it exempted anyone who is the main caregiver for dependent children or elderly family members, it exempted anyone with a huge list of health issues that are essentially self-reported. Furthermore, Putin announced that Russia would NOT ask other countries to send back anyone who fled due to the partial mobilization.

The point was that Russia does NOT want or need people in the military right now who are desperate NOT to serve and who would bring down morale and likely hamper the overall effort. Ukraine has announced at least SIX mobilizations by now and the most recent videos leaking out of Ukraine show troops forcibly dragging away college students. Ukraine also announced that they plan to start conscripting WOMEN who have experience in any of 14 different fields soon and, throughout this conflict, Ukraine has drafter men as old as SIXTY. Yeah, sixty. Ukraine has fought this war in large part by conscripting everyone they can and throwing massive numbers of untrained soldiers into battle in the hopes of forcing Russia to run out of equipment or ammo or that they can cause the war to drag on long enough and inflict enough Russian casualties to sour the Russian public on the Putin government. Yeah, that sounds like a really bad strategy to me, too, but it’s been widely reported by both pro and anti-Russia analysts, with the only difference being that the pro-Russia analysts will say it’s a crazy strategy and doomed to fail, while the anti-Russia analysts will say “Well, nobody knows for sure how much ammo and equipment they have, but we’re throwing everything at them and making them use up ammo fast, so we think they’ll run out eventually and be sitting ducks.” Perhaps this is a bit too cynical of me, but I can’t help but think that part of that equation has to be that the REAL decision-makers are not Ukrainian and are simply figuring that if their plan of defeating Russia through sheer volume of cannon fodder succeeds, great, they win, and if it fails, who cares if they kill every Ukrainian male in the process, since those are “just” Ukrainians and not anyone they know or from their neighborhoods.

Anyway, recruitment goals were met at over 200% in most Russian territories, with long lines of volunteers showing up and many actually being turned away because they didn’t fit the required standards or they lacked the list of skills Russia was particularly looking for. There are people who freaked out and fled the country, but I very much doubt they are the “cream of the crop.” Some of them are just idiots who didn’t have any chance of being mobilized anyway, while others likely worry that the borders could be closed under martial law if things get more intense and think this could just be the first in a wave of mobilizations, with a much wider net cast in the future. While that seems unlikely and a bit paranoid to me, I can see how some people would flee for that reason. However, there’s another group of people leaving who have no practical concerns about being sent to war, but who are just more aligned with Western culture and want a future in Europe or the US, so they’re getting out while they can.

For some reason, YouTube has been continuously recommending videos to me by some fashionable and trendy looking 20-ish Russian girl who is apparently a Russian YouTube personality and who has been making it well-known that she’s against the war and against her government in a way that seems designed less as a conscientious expression of sincere objections and more like a self-serving look-at-me I’m-on-your-side-western-movie-stars-and-rock-and-rap-stars-I-stupidly-idolize form of pandering. I noticed a few days ago that her latest video was titled “I Finally Did It! I Left Russia!” I’m sure most Russians are saying “Good riddance!” There are people like this who fled. Who wanted to trade their culture for the Western glitz and glamour of thirty genders and sex changes for kids and affirmative action and so on. Once they discover the extent of anti-Russian prejudice among the exact types of people they look at with envy or, instead of getting sympathy as a refugee from the “evil” Putin regime, they are not only expected to insist they disown their old government at every turn and repeatedly and treated with skepticism as to whether they “really” mean it, but they are also told to “check their privilege” as a white woman from a Christian background, who is able-bodied and has “food security,” shelter, etc. … well, they may begin to develop a different perspective then. The irony is that there are many people in the West who would welcome Russian immigrants just like anyone else and be friendly and helpful to them, but those people are not the types they think are “cool,” they’re the “deplorables” they view as ideologically aligned with what they’re running away from. In a sense, this is sad to see, because young people inevitably make all sorts of mistakes and have relatively shallow values in some ways compared to how they view the world with more age and experience, and I imagine that if there had not been such a strong inflection point right now, many of the people making this sort of life-altering mistake would have grown out of their “rebellious” phase and had a mostly normal, responsible, well-adjusted life. However, Russia has its hands full right now creating a safe and prosperous future for the people who want to be there and who appreciate the culture and traditions of their parents and grandparents. It’s bad timing for those who are immature and ungrateful in their youth, but not necessarily unsalveagable under normal circumstances, but there’s really no way around it.

And while I appreciate the caution more than you could possibly realize, the notion of either “don’t do anything to raise their ire” or that anyone who suggests anything other than standing down is a “fed” – are both going to get a lot of people killed, soon.

I have heard several radio ads by Abbott . They are pretty bad. But Abbott isn’t going to spend money if he doesn’t think he needs to, and he doesn’t.

O’Rourke will get the D vote and for some weird reason women under 35 are kind of swooney over him. But if he couldn’t beat Cruz — who has literally negative charisma — he isn’t beating Abbott. Especially after his stunt in Uvalde.

Also a worried Texan here, you are correct, even though these ads are entirely false I noticed that there are no anti-Robert Francis ads. I hope for our sake that Abbott isn’t getting complacent, these ads can have an effect on the low info voters with no opposition.

The group running those ads is a national, east coast firm with shady financing. Abbott is running ads showing Beto making comments on supporting BLM and defund the police movement. I supported West hoping for a more serious fight against the left. That said, I am working hard to keep Beto out of any political office. I am more concerned with AG Paxton’s race. He has been great pushing back. Losing him would be bad. He lives in libs heads much like President Trump. That said, the Texas AG is a pretty weak office, example is he cannot criminally prosecute voter fraud unless the county district attorney asks him to. Good luck getting corrupt DA’s in Austin, Dallas, SA, etc. making that request. It is a legacy of our constitution which was written during reconstruction and did not vest much power in statewide officers (Governor, AG, etc.).

Isn’t it up to the courts to see the evidence before refusing to hear the cases?

I know we concentrate a lot on the corruption in the legislative and executive branches. But little is said about what to do about the judiciary. The stolen election of 2020 can almost single-handedly be put on the corrupted judiciary branch who refused to hear cases and allow evidence to be presented under the pretext that they knew the outcome in advance. And that includes SCOTUS.

That actually makes a lot of sense – shortages due to drugs:

We know there are more drugs than ever coming across the wide open border.

Legalization of weed in many states probably contributes, at least to some extent, to this as well – in terms of making it easier both to obtain and consume (i.e., edibles).

We know that opioid deaths are through the roof – pointing to increased drug use.

I am sure they will send a series of strongly worded (meaningless) letters.

I caution against attributing this to stupidity, wasteful spending and greed. Yes, our politicians are stupid, greedy and getting rich from the wasteful spending. It is part of an Agenda2030/2050 system they call alternative energy corridors. I-75 going into Atlanta and others have long been under construction. Eventually, gasoline and diesel vehicles will be denied access.

The EV charging issues can be solved. They have a plan for removable lithium ion battery packs that can be quickly switched out at a service station in these corridors. The stations can charge hundreds simultaneously. Already the green funding is creating companies that will lease drivers a battery pack (Vinfast in NC). One will never own their battery. Charging and exchange will be under digital financial control (You will own nothing. You will be happy)

Yes, much of this agenda will result in suffering, misery, loss of wealth and death of Americans – especially the working class.. But those are hardly bad things to a global tyranny.
