Every time this push for President Trump to publicly disparage his son-in-law, one of the very few people he could give a task to which did not get leaked to the press, is a reminder that that people are still jockeying for position in President Trump’s world.
It gives the sense that those pushing for President Trump to openly disparage his son-in-law have still not learned that lesson about the importance of loyalty to the man whom they insist must do what is never going to happen. I hope so. He was BY FAR the most effective member of Trump’s administration. He was in charge of two major projects during Trump’s time in office: negotiating the Abraham Accords (Middle East peace deals) and getting the First Step Act (criminal justice reform) passed with bipartisan support. He also worked with Lighthizer on the USMCA and other trade negotiations and took the lead role in coordinating with states during Covid to ensure hospitals had enough protective gear and logistics were strong enough that we never suffered from the sorts of overflow issues that happened in Italy and other countries. It’s rarely mentioned nowadays, but early in the pandemic, it was widely feared and expected by many that we would run out of basic equipment, with catastrophic results. It looked to the media like we had no way to source enough of what we needed, especially since China had hoarded so much of it after discovering Covid but before informing the world, but Kushner found the necessary supply lines and kept every state stocked up. That was his specific job on the Covid task force. You may recall that he fielded questions at one Covid presser that focused specifically on these issues and he was so obviously more on the ball than Pence that it was actually embarrassing for Pence.
There might be other people close to Trump who repeat talking points you want to hear and whom you feel more comfortable with for various reasons. However, nobody else came close to getting as much done.
The bizarre hate for Kushner that’s spread by much of the online “MAGA” community and by a-holes like Kelly is really frustrating to see. I can think of three possible reasons for it and none of them are encouraging:
(1) The idea of MAGA voters as being an anti-GOPe movement that’s totally different from the “conservatism” of people like George W Bush and Dick Cheney is BS and really just something most Trump voters think sounds good. However, push come to shove, they don’t want effective, pragmatic people in important positions unless those people agree lockstep with some totally outdated and hypocritical “moral majority” sort of platform that is the epitome of GOPe.
(2) The MAGA movement is rife with anti-Semitism, to the point where a significant % of the movement wants to force out the most effective member of Trump’s team simply because he’s Jewish. Before you react negatively to this being mentioned as a possibility, ask yourself honestly how many blatantly anti-Semitic posts you see on CTH whenever Jared comes up. Then remember that CTH is the most civil, reasonable MAGA forum online and other places where Trump supporters congregate and comment have WAY more of all the bad stuff. If I had to bet right now on what the deal is with the Jared hate, I’d bet against this being THE reason, but I think it’s in the mix with enough people to matter. Probably more reason (1), but some anti-Semitism tossed in to add to the irrational fervor of the anti-Jared crowd
(3) This is the most “innocent” explanation, but also discouraging in its own way… and I don’t really think it’s true on CTH, where the people commenting only have to read the website they comment on to be well-informed. That MANY Trump supporters simply have no idea who did what during Trump’s time in office and would be shocked to hear that Jared was in charge of the Middle East peace process and the First Step Act and that he worked on the USMCA and other successful trade deals and coordinated the one aspect of the Covid policy nobody can logically criticize, which was working with governors to keep hospitals in all 50 states stocked up on the protective gear and equipment they needed. They might also be unaware that their personal favorites for ideological reasons, such as Bannon, were far less effective and not nearly as pragmatic. Maybe it’s just ignorance… but I doubt it and, even if it is, that still isn’t good.

To know that Jared Kushner is problematic, just look at who he used and still uses for lawyers.
When Trump was running for office in 2016, I was one of those who noted that Ivanka and Kushner’s lawyer was Jamie Gorelick. She was also their an “ethics” advisor. I wrote Trump a letter to complain about this association and express my concerns why this was worrisome. Apparently, it had little effect but that doesn’t mean there’s not problem.
Gorelick was involved in Chinagate. In 1994, McDonnell Douglas Corporation transferred military-use machine tools to the China despite Defense Department objections. McDonnell Douglas was a client of the law firm where Gorelick worked for 17 years? In 1995, General Electric, another former client of Gorelick’s law firm, assisted China’s nuclear program. In 1995, the CEO of Hughes Electronics, another client of Gorelick’s old firm, gave sensitive data and equipment to the Chinese, which a later Pentagon study would conclude allowed China to develop intercontinental and submarine-launched ballistic missiles.
Then Gorelick is the one who in 1995 came up with the ideal of using Presidential Decision Directive 24 (PDD24), which Bill Clinton has signed the previous year, to erect what came to be called Chinese Walls between the FBI and various intelligence agencies. As Deputy Attorney General under Janet Reno, she wrote a 1995 memo recommending them to “separate the counterintelligence investigation from the more limited, but continued, criminal investigations.” She did this in order to help Clinton (and her) keep anyone from connecting the dots in Chinagate … in other words, cover up Chinagate, which was probably the worst scandal of the 1990s and the reason China is now such a threat to the world.
And not only did Gorelick’s Chinese Walls prevent Chinagate from being fully exposed and prosecuted, the 9/11 Commission concluded that it was these walls that led to 9/11 being a success. They prevented the CIA from telling the Justice Department that there were terrorists in the country training to fly large jets. And the real travesty is that Jamie Gorelick was on the 9/11 Commission, instead of being placed under oath and grilled about her role in 9/11.
In fact, she failed to share her “wall memo” with anyone on the Commission … until Attorney General John Ashcroft was blasted for the “wall” while he was testifying before the 9/11 commission and responded thus: “Although you understand the debilitating impact of the wall, I cannot imagine that the commission knew about this memorandum, so I have declassified it for you and the public to review. Full disclosure compels me to inform you that its author is a member of this commission.”
Gorelick was also involved in the TWA Flight 800 coverup. She arranged and guided the meeting held in the White House in August of 1996 between all parties involved in the Flight 800 investigation. She directed their efforts away from any serious terror or missile scenarios, and the meeting led to he removal of the NTSB, the independent aviation accident investigation agency, from the lead role in the TWA 800 investigation. They were replaced by the FBI, which Clinton controlled, and from that point on, the FBI focused on finding an alternative explanation for the explosive residue that found throughout the plane. The FBI ended up pushing an exculpatory tale of a sloppy dog-training exercise aboard the Flight 800 plane five weeks before the crash. That easily disproved story satisfied the mainstream media.
Over and over Jamie Gorelick proved to be a really bad apple. Yet what did Gorelick get to do after leaving the Clinton administration in 1997? She went to work for Fannie May, where as Vice Chairman, she, along with Franklin Raines, helped bankrupt the organization, which eventually led to the collapse of the US economy in 2008.
She and Raines disguised what they were doing by orchestrating a $5 billion accounting fraud … literally cooking the books … while all the while continuing to pressure banks to make more bad loans and denouncing Republicans as enemies of the poor. And while all the while lining her own pockets with tens of millions of dollars in salary and bonuses (some for what turned out to be completely bogus transactions). Gorelick was a criminal but under the Democrats’ 2010 “Financial Reform” bill (written by democRATS Chris Dodd and Barney Frank), she and Raines got to keep their millions in stolen money.
And despite both that massive fraud and economic failure, and the detrimental consequences of Chinagate and her Chinese Walls, she was placed on Obama’s short list to head the FBI. Criminality and corruption in support of democRATS and their agenda is only rewarded by the Democratic Party. She probably didn’t get the slot only because she supported Hillary in the 2008 primary. And when Hillary decided to run for President in 2016, she supported her again … by, for example, attacking Comey in the press regarding emailgate. As a reward, it was revealed after the election that Gorelick was on the short list to become Hillary’s Attorney General had she won.
And despite all the above, she was Ivanka’s and Kushner’s LAWYER. And despite warnings like I made to Trump and his campaign, Gorelick continued to be their lawyer. The only change was that in July 1017, it was announced (https://www.cnn.com/2017/07/14/politics/jared-kushner-lawyer-jamie-gorelick/index.html) that Gorelick wouldn’t handle Russia matters but would remain Kushner’s lawyer in other matters. Abbe Lowell would handle the Russia inquiries. And note that article also says “Former FBI Director Bob Mueller, who is overseeing the Justice Department’s Russia probe, was a partner with Gorelick.” This is how deeply she was embedded in the opposition to MAGA.
As to Abbe D Lowell, he seems problematic too, working for the same legal firm as Gorelick. He was the Chief Minority lawyer to the democRATS during Clinton’s impeachment. And he too repeatedly donated to Hillary and Obama. Also Lieberman, John Edwards and Daschle. He’s a hardcore democrat … and this is who Kushner is using for legal advice? I smell a rat … and not just Lowell. Maybe that’s why Kushner voluntarily testified before the Jan 6th committee.

Do recall that Russia is not the USSR. Unlike Stalin there are now constraints that are in fact quite-democratic; in fact Putin is constrained by the Duma, which must pass laws to enable his acts and power. We may well disagree with the determinations of the legislature there just as we might with regard to Mexico, Canada or France but what’s unmistakable is that said power is in fact delegated, not predicated on dictatorship or monarchy.
In other words Putin is not Hitler, nor is he Stalin. He might, however, be somewhat akin to Xi.
There are referenda being taken in one and part of a second province of eastern Ukraine as I write this. These are areas of the nation that historically, before Ukraine was “spun off”, were Russian. The people there identify as Russian and the land shares a border with Russia. In the case of Crimea it was literally purchased by Russia long before the USSR (an “agglomeration” of lands) existed.
I have, as you might expect, plenty of questions about the legitimacy of said polling; is it truly free in that it expresses the will of the people in these parts of the nation? I don’t know the answer to that but what I do know is that if the people of a land have the right of self-determination when it comes to their government that extends, with certainty, to them choosing to ally themselves with a government that happens to be immediately-adjacent on one of the sides of the land in question.
