The government took over student loans in 2010.
In the old days (1990s, ha) you had a private bank – public partnership. The Universities need customers, I mean students, and students need means to pay for their higher education. The banks can loan money, but they want a return on investment; otherwise, the bank can loan that money to construction, services or anything else with more immediate return than +4 years from now. So the interest rate has to be high to price in the “cost of capital” and the risk of default. That higher cost of education can be a deterrent.
And in the old old days (1940s), that was a very tricky thing. The university assumes some liability to the loan to the student, so they were extremely picky about who they would let into college. If the student couldn’t pay, somebody has to; it was easier to “pre-judge” and not accept the student. And the government wants the process to be more “fair” and be open to everyone, regardless of financial risk.
So the government steps in, and absorbs some of that risk. Uncle Sam will backstop 90% of default, so the bank doesn’t have to write it off; this should make it cheaper to loan money, to keep the cost of education down. Uni can then open up to more students who now have access to more career options, and everyone’s happy.
Congress creates a program called Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) in 1965, which we call Perkins/Stafford loans. Over its 45 year life, this represents 80% of all Ed loans, 6.5 million families for $54 billion in loans.
Except that’s not how it worked out. Cheaper cost to loans means easier access, yes. But low interest rates (dare I say artificially low) make it easier for a student to borrow larger sums. And that means no downward pressure on the cost of education. Colleges can set higher and higher tuition rates, banks will accept it because the gov co-signs, and the student now has $200k in debt before they even start their career in underwater basket weaving.
Now by 2010 the government thinks they are getting a bad deal; banks are making bank, students are complaining to their congresspersons, interest rates are all over the place. Since Uncle Sam is already creating the money to give to the bank to give to the student to give to the college, we can have the gov just service the loan in the first place. So the Federal Direct Loan (FDL) program is formed, FFEL is retired, and all of the problems are solved.
And in the 12 years FDL has existed, it has loaned out about $1.5 trillion ($1500 billion, or 27x the old program) directly from the Department of Education. There has been no reduction in individual costs, interest rates are close to prime, and colleges are richer than ever. Clearly Uncle Sam isn’t worried about costs or the ability to repay; which is exactly why we are now talking about a portion of loan forgiveness. The entire system is broke.

The President can declassify – or classify – anything he wants, just by doing so. If he said that the material was “declassified,” then he declassified them by saying so. “Anything in this box is declassified.” He doesn’t have to make an inventory and he doesn’t have to get approval: “Anything in that box is declassified.” Literally, “because he said so.”
Mar-a-Lago contains a “SCIF” secure conference facility for proper storage and examination of classified material. The entire compound is secured by Secret Service. So, it is not possible to say that Trump violated any secrecy laws, whether or not the markings on the pages were crossed-out. They asked him to add a padlock and he did, so they can’t then claim that the declassified documents were not secured to their satisfaction. You do not get to cite law as authorizing an action then claim the president does not have to follow requirements for proper execution of authority within the very same law YOU state authorizes action. The President has to follow the entire law, not just the decision to act component.

Apparently one of Senator Cole’s aides had come across that, and thought what a wonderful way to make a fool of that crazy Mr. Fletcher — he thinks that there are electronic weather control abilities. So I was ambushed by Senator Cole from Wisconsin. It obviously had nothing to do with the Patriot or the Militia movement. The intent was to ambush me and make me look like some kind of a nut case. It caught me from left field; fortunately, I had enough in my memory banks to instantly recall enough information to at least retaliate in a direct manner to his question. This included the fact that Senator Claiborne Pell several years ago had been quoted in a news story in which he had said, “now that we can control the weather, create earthquakes and tidal waves and use it as a weapon of war we need to do a treaty.” Other responses at that point were sufficient to get Senator Cole to slam his briefcase closed — off camera of course, you wouldn’t have seen it unless you were there. All three of his go-fers (aides) left immediately and never returned, so he was not terribly happy that Mr. Fletcher actually answered his questions.

The simple matter is that we are running out of ammunition and basic supplies, because the ships from China haven’t shown up yet. We turned the industry that won World War 2 into a “rust belt.” Russia did not.
If an actual, conventional war broke out, then the winner is going to be he who can out-manufacture the other. We don’t have the means to do that anymore, and even if we did the “snowflakes” would not know how to run them. As Russian forces consume weapons and supplies on the battlefields, their nation is calmly making more. We can no longer do that.
So – you will hear a lot of bloviating from the US, the EU, and NATO. But none of them will engage because all of them know they can’t win a slug-fest. Russia also knows they can’t win. Russia engaged in this limited military operation knowing in advance that it would win, and it is matter-of-factly doing so now. This will not “drag out.” Russia will accomplish the mission and Ukraine will have no choice but to accept her terms.
Very likely, Zelensky’s failed civilian government will be toppled from within by a Ukranian military junta very soon.
Each time Russia drops a precision weapon on an ammo dump and blows up a hundred rockets – which it has done many times now – those rockets cannot be replaced. When it takes out a tank, that tank cannot be replaced. Weapons have to travel hundreds of miles by rail to get to the danger zone, and Russia has complete control of the skies. It simply determines what’s on that train and blows it up with a single missile shot.
This is not the first time the US Government has “stripped” active duty military of weapons for an “ally”. It was done in 1967, 1973 and 1978 for the Israelis.
The equipment sent to Israel was drawn from forward deployed equipment in storage as well as from the floating replacement-reserve actually held by combat units. At the time thins had an impact on:
Ability to send troops from the US to reinforce areas where the US deployed by giving away the equipment those deploying troops were to use.
Reduced combat effectiveness of combat units by removing their ability to immediately replace losses.
In some cases unit capability upgrades were delayed, leaving units vulnerable. This one is my personal favorite with the transfer of the M-60 RISE Passive Tanks meant to replace our Cavalry Squadron’s M-551 Sheridans.
These are true with this give away as well. Plus, it appears actual units may now be loosing equipment.
On the flip side, it allowed cleaning out old and expiring assets from the logistics system and deployed units. Now it remains to be seen if replacement equipment is actually provided or will the US Military just continue to contract and thus remove the need for any replacements.

Personally, I never thought the Volt indicated a good price or the best technology. We bought our Honda DX hybrid 15 years ago for $25k all included. It never needs a plug-in, using a flywheel action during braking/coasting instead to recharge. That car’s hybrid battery was replaced 2 years ago for $2500, including labor. The Blue Book is still $5k for trade-in. We’re thinking of getting a new one. If I wanted an EV instead of a hybrid, I would buy a Nissan Leaf, not a Chevy.
