Today I am wearing my Tea Party t-shirt, purchased in 2009 at one of the very first tea party rallies in west central Minnesota at a farm-town of about 26,000 pop. We had as guest speaker a conservative talk radio guy from Fargo. A group of women headed up the organization of the rally. My husband and I were among the first arriving….wanting to find good parking around the 1-block-large city park where the rally was held.
First there, first working–so my husband did most of the heavy work for the women who were dragging sawhorses and things for getting the little stage set up. I have pictures.
The county democrat chairman, an ugly man both inside and out, carried the US flag upside down as he walked continuously back and forth between the front row of audience members (who had all carried their own lawn chairs in for the event) and the stage, about a 15 foot wide space.
The local newspaper reported a couple of days later (not a daily paper) that there were about a hundred in attendance. It was more like 500. Those in attendance were equally men and women, most of them farm couples who had come in from the surrounding countryside. Many of them, in deliberate self-mockery (and accepting the mockery in those early days) had tea bags stapled to their baseball-style John Deere or McCormick farm caps; their wives stapled the tea bags to their sunhats and purses. (Obviously they didn’t normally wear sun hats at night, but for special occasions that needed things stapled to them–yes, then they did.)
My t-shirt is now down to yard-work status, I guess.
The large text on it says, PARTY LIKE IT’S 1773.

A couple of people replied to my post on the Pres thread yesterday regarding things they can do regarding obfuscation and obstruction of the “data miners” that track our habits and movements so I thought that I would expand a little.
Stopping them (gov’t and corporate entities who are building profiles on all of us) is not possible but if you flood them with incorrect data, it makes the data that they gather worthless as it’s difficult to tell the good data from the bad.
Note 1: Once you accept that your phone number is your new “national indentity number”, things become clearer and you understand why the gov’t spent so much (of our money) subsidizing the development of the cellular system. Landline phones only identify a household but cellular phones identify an individual.
Whenever you can, give them false names and false phone numbers.
When I buy auto parts, etc., they always demand a phone number. I make one up and when they look up from the monitor and ask: Gertrude Jones? I just nod and say “Yep, that’s me.”
If I give them a name, sometimes they say “That’s not the name you used a couple of weeks ago” I say “So what?”
If you have to use a credit/debit card (I always try to use cash) they have your name but you can still give them a bogus phone number if they ask and it will now be associated with your name. Area codes no longer mean anything as to where you actually live.
If you can get 100 phone numbers associated with your name you’ve put sand in their gears.
To do online transactions with the DMV in my state, they demand an email address and it’s verified when you enter it before you can go further.
DMV has it set up so that once you do an online transaction, all further license/registration notices come by email.
This is one way the gov’t forces you to keep them updated when you change your email address. Bad idea.
The use of any “free” email accounts (google, etc) is giving your data away.
Common sense should tell you that anything “free” from big business is not free.
I was in a Smiths pharmacy a couple of weeks ago filling a prescription for one of my animals and when I saw the price was 25% lower than in the past, I asked why. She said “I gave you a discount”.
When I pushed the issue, she admitted that if I accept the discount, that gives them my permission to give away my phone number to parties unknown. See Note 1 above.
I declined.

It is the control network for all of our communications infrastructure (voice, cellular). It’s and external network that performs numerous tasks for the process of setting up and routing calls from one user to another. It has been around for decades, long before cell phones and yours, mine and everyone else’s traditional land line calls where being monitored and easily captured as part of a supposed national security set of reasons, eg. if you were to make a threat to elected officials on a phone call to a friend, even jokingly you would have invoked a ‘trigger’ word or phrase that would have allowed the SS7 network to flag and capture your call. I worked in the field of Telecommunications for many years. I would strongly believe the SS7 infrastructure is a large part of the 5 Nines relationship between the U.S and other nations. At least I understood it to be when I worked in the SS7 realm. Probably me sending a comment mentioning my knowledge of SS7 gets saved for a later retrieval. If one is able to hack into the SS7 (everything is hackable) –then you have a gold mine of information.

If there’s an issue, which there hardly ever is, I simply walk away with my cash in my pocket and don’t go back there.

My at-the-time DIL’s mother wanted her daughter to abort my grandson.

The Richard Simmons pop-up has been going on for months, annoying, but eventually able to get through.

I have an entirely different take on “student loans.”
When I got my four-year ticket in the early 1980’s, my out-of-state cost was about $13,000 and entirely paid by a benevolent candy company. (Please buy Brock’s or Brach’s candies …) In-state tuition at the same public university was about $3,500, and “full tuition” merit scholarships were commonplace. Today, the published tuition is more than $350,000, and the cost of a single required electronics lab which meets three days a week for one hour is $8,500. Tack on another $150,000 if you have to stay in a dorm.
Now, let me ask: “What does ‘a college’ physically consist of, and how much money does it cost to run one?”
Well, the physical plant is no different from that of any high school: just classrooms, teachers, bathrooms and snack machines. And a security officer for the parking lot. All of which is still free to students.
The only reason why this exorbitant tranche of debt even exists today is so that Wall Street, having found that it could no longer “securitize”
subprimeworthless home mortgages, needed something else for its “derivatives.” Something which could not be discharged in bankruptcy. Messrs. Dodd and Frank were all too happy to oblige, and Wall Street has since sold trillions of dollars’ worth of SLABS = Student Loan Asset-Backed Securities. (Which, unsurprisingly, are linked to “actual loans” in name only.)This is unconscionable.
Students should not be required to pay any more for “higher education” than it actually costs to provide it. Which, as I have said, is quite minimal. Public universities are non-profit. A public college education (or trade school) could, in fact, be free. Yes, we can afford it easily. “Why stop at high school?”
Instead, students are being crushed with unconscionable debt, only so that they become debtors and their debt can then be “securitized” on the derivatives market of Wall Street. College Professors are not driving around in Lamborghinis. In fact, I have serious questions as to where “all that money” actually goes. Does the college actually get it, and if so, where is the CPA-audited financial statement to show us how the money is being spent? 🧐

My blunt opinion is that society should say, in no uncertain terms: “F&ck You, Wall Street!” We’re not going to put the public in hock to “repay” those unconscionable debts: we are going to void them.
Our children deserve affordable “higher education,” and we owe nothing to you. Neither must we “bail you out” when you inform your securities-holders that the value of their “derivatives” is now zero. “This is the bed that you made, and now you must lie in it.” You get to figure out what to tell them now . . . and our children, “frankly, don’t give a damn.” (Nor should they. Nor should they have. Ever.)
We say these things as we repeal the provisions of the Dodd-Frank legislation which allowed them to exist. (And, let’s reinstate “Glass-Steagall” at the same time. Those Depression-era lawmakers actually knew what they were talking about …)
Categorically speaking, “the entirety of Dodd-Frank was a f&cking disaster.”
I went to a college financial seminar and the guy was really good and talked about how to save for college and how expensive it was. One of the first questions to him was. “Why do colleges charge so much?” He paused for a minute and said “Well, because they can and we continue to pay it” That was an eye opener.
My personal opinion on the issue is that community college 2 years or an equivalent apprenticeship or certificate should be free (taxes) for EVERYONE This IMO will put pressure on 4 year schools to compete against free college/apprenticeships and will ultimately have to drive down prices. Bailing out students for high priced colleges will only drive those colleges to charge even more.
I don’t know just something I’ve been thinking about.
I actually started at a Community College where I earned my Associate’s degree. Absolutely saved me a boatload on tuition compared to the university later.
And better, they had matriculation agreements with the State university system for transferring credits. Transferred in to UMaine with a bit more than half of the credit hours needed toward my Bachelor’s degree.
A good option if you pick the right path with a goal in mind. Like I did with my STEM degrees.
I, and the lady who was to become (and still is …) my wife, also had a similar experience as we (although we didn’t know it at the time) “were guinea-pigs in the institutions’ first ‘Computer Science’ degree programs.” Although neither of us actually paid for our degrees, due to the full-tuition merit scholarships which were then readily available, her benefactors got a much better deal. Her credits were fully transferable, of course, but the curriculum was much “cleaner” and more focused, while the instructors were also excellent. Her program “had its eyes on the prize.”
My goal is accreditation as a professional engineer. The next step is taking the FE exam.
You should not have been asked to pay anything for the training necessary to pass that exam. “Our society needs more Professional Engineers.” And, yes, “we can afford to train you.” As long as you promise to bust-your-a*s 👻 in fulfilling the many difficult requirements that we throw at you, just like everybody else before you did.
“Schools are cheap, and we need Professionals. We’ve got your back.”

The public education system should offer both (baccalaureate …) University degrees and “community college” and “trade school” higher-education paths. And, the costs of attending these non-profit institutions should be strictly and accountably tied to actual costs … which by law should be “reasonable.”
I see no economic reason why this level of education could not also be free. Schools actually don’t cost much to run, and costs do not dramatically rise when you reach “13th Grade.” As I said, “why stop at high school?” Especially today?
Because we shouldn’t be funding public schools as it is. They are a bottomless pit of tax dollars that produce nothing but ignorant, barely literate, innumerate graduates. Many of whom hate the country and the taxpayers that provided the ‘education.’
Yes, colleges are wasting borrowed money on overpaid administrators, fancy housing, spa-like gyms, etc. They are also admitting many students who don’t belong in college and have dropped pretty much all academic requirements and rigor. An undergraduate degree is currently the equivalent of a HS diploma because everyone gets one. We should be discouraging college attendance and cutting public universities as they are overproducing degreed individuals for our workforce needs.
Well, Lulu, “that’s a problem with the school,” and by the way I agree with you entirely on all points. Our present public University system is: “a hot-mess clusterf&ck” which is also in need of legally-mandated reforms.
It is not, however, a problem with the essential concept that we should be providing ready access to “education beyond high school.” As an investment in our own future.
And, making certain by law that the prices thereof – whether paid-for by the student or by the public or a benefactor or some combination of the above – actually correspond directly (and, “CPA-accountably”) to actual costs. A private University can do what it likes, but a public University is non-profit and cannot “do as it likes.”
We owe absolutely nothing to Wall Street speculators, nor to their political cronies like Dodd and Frank. (And, neither should they.)
I should also add: “Public universities need not be paupers.” They should be able to offer competitive, even very attractive, salaries to their faculty, administrators, and staff. So as to attract the people who can furnish students with an excellent education (if they want it badly enough). Their degree-programs should be second to none. “We can do this …”
Even with this, the operational costs of any “school” remain minimal. We’re not going to break the public bank by offering excellence.

Well, you are already “paying for that public University” whose cost-schedules are utterly indefensible.
Seriously: say twenty students attend that “mandatory lab session” three times a week for fifteen weeks equals forty-five times per student. For one hour per session. So, each student ultimately purchases 45 hours of instruction time. “But at what price, and why?”
The total money paid is $8,500 times twenty students = $170,000. Which means, if I did the math right, that this public, non-profit(!), University is somehow receiving $3,777.77 per hour for this highly dubious yet mandatory service, provided to twenty students simultaneously by one individual who probably is not rich.
So I repeat – “where is ‘all that money’ actually going?”
And, “I’d like to know why.”
(As a taxpayer, I feel perfectly entitled to demand a CPA-audited financial statement which accounts for every damned penny that this public University is collecting from its students. And my state legislature should be demanding the same on my behalf.)
Face it: “These ‘prices’ are nonsense.” Students are being driven into “hopeless levels of debt” only because someone else wants to sell a “security interest in” that debt.
Not because it has anything whatsoever legitimately to do with: “education.”
To a Wall Street “derivatives” speculator, “your debt is money for me.” I’ll sell someone else a “first-derivative security interest” in your debt, then(!) I’ll sell a “second-derivative interest,” ad infinitum.
(Imagine a room filled(!!) with “disco mirror-balls.” It only takes one beam of light to be shined into it … Oh, Rumpelstiltskin in his fondest spinning-wheel moments could never have dreamed of such a thing.)
Until I’ve built-up what I claim to be a trillion-dollar house of cards, of course composed of “Rumpelstiltskin’s ‘Gold'” but I’m counting on you – sucker… – not to know that.
And I’m quite ready to condemn college students to “permanent debt slavery” in order to accomplish my aims. “Oh, this is so much nicer than ‘worthless mortgage’ debts that debtors can actually escape from …”
YES, YES, YES!!! I’m so glad this is being said out loud. I couldn’t believe it when I went to visit Kent State University, where I received a business degree. It was so fancy now. Flushed with cash. All so unnecessary to an education. It was around 3 grand a year back in the 80’s when I went. Now its over 25grand. I was appalled and disgusted !!
