Well, this just completely wiped out all my carefully organized plans for tonights videos. Coming across this wonderful example of musical archaeology really brought me back. I was a young grad student then, experiencing laid-back Austin in its heyday. I wasn’t much into even smoking dope but I was observant. If you lived in the right inner city neighborhood the cops were noticably tollerant—if you didn’t screw up and make trouble they left you alone. We, of course, reciprocated by pointedly not involving cops . . . in anything. One night at the shop, when I was working late, this completely stoned young girl wandered in. She didn’t know where she was and wasn’t all that sure just who she was. I let her sleep on the shop couch. When I checked a couple of hours later she was gone. Probably I save her from trouble. I hope so.
The music is great, but the story is fantabuloso!!! Love the story and the writing!
Your first sentence piqued my curiosity and am now wondering what your carefully organized plans for tonight’s video were, but perhaps we’ll all just have to wait until tomorrow night. Patience isn’t my forte. Bummer.

Here comes another story…this reminded me of it…Sheep Shagger is used in Wales as well, and it’s not very nice…BUT…
My husband, before he took over the day to day running of the transport company in our town, drove their buses and was the main man keeping them running. When he was working on their fleet, he wore overalls and sturdy workboots.
One day when he had finished getting one of the buses roadworthy, he and the chap he worked with took it for a run to test it…up, up, up the main wind-y road to the Horseshoe Pass, as it was called which had panoramic views of the valley (breathtaking). And all along this road were sheep safely grazing (hat tip J Bach).
But as they were making their way up the road, he saw one poor sheep which had gotten itself stuck in the brambles and couldn’t free itself. So he pulled over into a layby (rest area), got out, and tried to free it with the clippers he always carried.
It was difficult and not going well, as the sheep was none too cooperative. So he positioned himself directly behind this big beast, grabbed hold of her both sides to steady her, and straddled her to keep her in position while he clipped the brambles off.
And so it happened as traffic went by, there was a small car which slowed down to see what was happening, driven by a small older lady. My husband looked up at her and he said the look on her face as he stood behind this sheep on the road in his overalls and workouts was something to behold…something between shock and disgust… and then she drove on. What a story she must have told when she got home! Even my husband said he didn’t think about what he must have looked like to those passing. Embarrassing in the extreme. We’ve laughed about that so many times, because once seen (as we used to say) never forgotten.
And yes, he did manage to free the sheep, which went back to safely grazing.

Before I anwser would it be all right to call the little fella “nipper” that is how we say little fella in Australia ! We call Grandpa “Pop” too !
What is Australia like ?
Well it’s a really big country the same size as America without Alaska ,
Australia is also the biggest island in the world.
We have everything you have in America like forests, we call them ‘bush’ or ‘scrub’ some really big rainforests too.
All of the middle of Australia is desert country, that’s why most people live on the coasts.
Lots of snow too in what we call the ‘high country’.
There is a very good book about the ‘high country’ called ” The man from snowy river” you should see if your pop can get it for you.
2/ Is it a nice place ?
It is my home and I like it very much.
Some places people can be mean but I just don’t go to them places, I like to go fishing and camping and stuff like that.
The people are friendly and will help you out of trouble if your car breaks down or you need help in other ways.
We have lots of funny names that Americans don’t understand, I will tell you a couple, do you know what “Laughing gear” means ? It means your mouth !
Tucker, means food, so if I said to you it’s ‘Tucker time’ and I also said ‘rap your laughing gear around this ‘ that means your dinner is ready to eat !
We call a mess a ‘dogs breakfast’ because dogs tend to make a mess when they eat.
Lots of young children when they get their first teeth like to see how they work by biting so we call them ‘ankle biters’ now that’s funny, there are lots of funny names that other countries don’t understand like a Koala we call a ‘drop bear’ ! A Kangaroo we call a ‘Skippy’ there are lots more funny names.
3/ Saltys, well that’s a really good Question, my anwser might sound like I’m a bit stupid or something, but yes I was nearly eatin by a Salty,he was a big one, he got caught later and was measured at 12 feet !!!
I have been around hundreds of Saltys and stay right away from them, some places where I worked you could see their eyes just on top of the water watching you.
At nightime if you shine a torch on the river they will come up to have a look, you can always tell they are there by their super red eyes.
Well I made a mistake one day I went down to the river for water and because it was so hot I decided to take a quick ‘dip’ in a shallow rock pool, it wasn’t very big about the size of a house,
I lyned down and put my head under the water and sat up ! A big swirl of water like you see in a bath when you let the water out happened in front of me and a huge crocodile head was looking at me, it was as big as a half of me.
Boy did I say my prayers, I slowly got up and walked backwards trying not to slip on any rocks, the Salty just watched, but I tell ya it was the most scary time in my life.
I made a mistake that I never should of made because I didn’t listen to the local Aboriginal people.
I think God was looking after me that day.
Nice to meet you anyways if you want to know more just ask, maybe one day when your older you might like to come and have a look a Australia, it’s a beautiful place in you don’t go near the Saltys !

I know it’s probably sacrilege, but no gravy wouldn’t bother me. Now you need to learn to cook a good English breakfast… with sausages and black pudding and grilled tomatoes and baked beans and fried egg and bacon (but not what we called there streaky bacon as ours is here…Brit bacon is like a pork chop in shape but verrrrrrry thin,like a slice of ham you’d put on a sandwich).
Once when I learned what black pudding actually was that part I gave a wide berth to. But the rest? Yum!
And if you said there “biscuits”, you’d get a cookie. I doubt many Brits have had the opportunity to enjoy good ole Southern biscuits.
Mmm, getting hungry again, sis.
We often have breakfast for dinner. I don’t know why but for us it tastes better in the evening.

About 3 months later the Aboriginal Rangers caught him after he attacked a “Tinny” ( small aluminum boat) if they are deemed to ferocious, attacking humans and stuff they are culled, otherwise they are a protected species and relocated, this big boy lived.
They normally keep to themselves , you’ve just got to learn to stay away from them, know the land is the best way to do this.

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow, that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

Well, as balls go, this one was kindergarten level. No, not everyone was dressed appropriately. Costumes ranged from every century. But it was a local dance, not professional, and mainly for the teenagers. These days I’ll take whatever I can get. The mother ship out of New England is all BOT into the narrative and not going to give an inch. So I don’t partake anymore. 🙁

Is the US threatening to shut down Nord stream 2 an effort to stop Russian aggression or is it provoking Russia to keep Germany inside it’s region of control? I suspect the latter. I did not consider Ritter’s point there is no need for a defensive alliance if it can’t defend you.

Ms Idaho, I had a dear friend in Wales who was a policeman. He was a book worm, possibly one of the smartest people I ever knew. And he spoke 7 languages when I knew him…all he taught himself. He just had the gift.
Anyway right before we came back here, there were thousands upon thousands of Poles who were immigrating to Britain, but in particular to our area. The Welsh police had no knowledge of Polish…so being an enterprising sort of chap, our friend taught himself Polish. He never ceased to amaze me. We left before he could give me a few useful phrases, more’s the pity. So I’m glad to have at least one useful Polish greeting.😊
I taught myself lots of stuff so I appreciate anyone who does that.
Not only did I never want to learn any foreign language which I never had a chance to use, the early programming must have been strong because I never missed or regretted not knowing Polish.
My brother and I (mom too) lived with her mom, boy & girl cousin next door, 2 boy cousins upper unit, – all close to the same age, all Polaks. We had enough Polish to listen to orders from Gram (she had broken English) – but that was it.
My joke about typing Polish is no joke. Even if you look up “Wszystkiego najlepszego z okazji urodzin” can you pronounce it? I can’t.
One of my doctor clients from Minnesota had a Polish last name. I could NEVER look at the spelling and say his name. I could say it – just not after looking at how it is spelled.

This is Generally correct at various Civil War battleground parks, including Gettysburg but not always. For example, here is the newest equestrian statue at Gettysburg. I was at that field last time, just a few days after its dedication. It is Confederate General Longstreet, who was not killed or wounded at Gettysburg and died of natural causes after the war though he was dangerously wounded by his own men at the Wilderness.
There are far more statues showing commanders dismounted than the equestrian statues. Generally only the highest commanders rate equestrian statues.
Here is the equestrian statue of Union General Reynolds, killed instantly by a rifle round to his head during the first days battle. Most people know of the horrendous wide spread fight of the 2nd day of battle and Pickets charge on the third day. But many, I think, don’t know how desperate and expansive that first days battle was. To give you an idea. If the 1st days battle at Gettysburg is considered as a separate battle, it ranks as the 8th largest battle of the war as measured by the number of men engaged.
Reynolds was native Pennsylvanian and probably the most capable Union General of the war. He was offered the command of the Army of the Potomac just before the battle of Gettysburg when it was decided to relieve Hooker, but declined because Lincoln would not give him the free hand he demanded if he was to take command. And thus it was George Meade that commanded the Army at Gettysburg. Reynolds remained in command of the 1st Corp which was the first full Union Corp that arrived and was shot when mounted leading his men into the battle line to relieve Bufford’s Calvary very early on.
Sometimes, but not always, the equestrian statues of a high ranking general that fell on the field are placed where they fell or at least near where they fell. Reynolds is near, but the actual spot where he fell is debatable.

Lee’s equestrian statue at Gettysburg is located where he watched Pickets charge.
Though all monuments and statues are interesting. To me the most interesting ones at Gettysburg are those of the units. They were commissioned and located on the field by the surviving veterans and intended to show what they did at that location. Many also have flank markers which indicate exactly where that units line was as the men who fought there remembered it.
I have been all over that field. I think I have seen every official marker and even one that was not official. A little up Culps hill is a stone. A stone marked by a confederate soldier laying prone under Union fire. I don’t think you will find it on any maps. An official guide showed it to me. The markings are the date that confederate soldier was there, laying prone under withering fire from Union men above who had built breast works of stone and logs and even had “head logs”.
A “head log” is a log placed at the top of the breast work and spaced above it so that the men behind it can shoot in the gap between the log and the top of the breast work . Remember now! Civil war soldiers did not have helmets. So a “head log” was an especially nice feature for a protected position.
BTW. More small arms ammunition was expended at Culps hill than at any other place on the battlefield. So much that about half of the trees in the woods at the time were dead from lead poisoning within a couple years after the battle.
Goodaye rah, I’ve read a lot of your civil war history, an old mate of mine done the battlefield tours many yrs ago, as an Aussie Patriot when he returned he always flew a CSA flag next to our southern Cross flag.
Always said that the people he met were the most hospitable one could wish to meet.

I view Lincoln as a great President and a tragic figure. Not as friend or foe. They were all Americans, no matter what side they fought on or represent in history.
During a visit to that battlefield, I was visiting the site on the Rose farm at the battlefield where this photograph and several others of Confederate dead was taken after the battle as Federal soldiers gathered dead and lined them up for burial.

I noticed a little confederate flag on the ground there. One of those little things on a stick. It was partially burned. Obviously some person had placed the flag there and another had come along and pulled it out of the ground and burned it partially and cast it away.
I replaced the remnants of those little stars and bars where those dead had lain.
I believe that every American should be proud of their heritage so long as it was not really criminal. During the 2nd days battle those men charged across an open field taking flanking fire from their left of grape shot or canister from federal batteries and then running head long towards the positions of the 2nd Delaware who were positioned in the rocks and trees ahead of them. All Americans should be proud of the valor they displayed and morn the fact that such men were lost.
Contemporary accounts from the survivors said that they remembered the slap of the iron balls from the artillery as it hit the stone sides of the Rose Farm barn as they passed by.
They died for a cause they believed in. A vision of what their country should be. And they are the heritage of our country every bit as much as soldiers from any of the other wars.
For me, there is no “Us” or “Them” in our civil war. They were all a part of the same tragedy from which emerged a different country that went on to do great things.
My personal heroes have always been Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill. I saw “Mungrel’s’ question about Lincoln in an unfavorable light in view of some arguments here about the American Civil War but your answer handles it perfectly.
There is a scene in the movie, “The Red Badge of Courage”, that has always touched me. Towards the end when Henry returns and finds himself reborn as a hero, he instinctively saves the dying Confederate flag bearer’s flag from being “disgraced” by touching the ground. It was a magnanimous gesture, worthy of a hero. That single act signifies so much and is never mentioned in any reviews, professional or amateur. The dying soldier climbing the hill so as not to die on the road is beyond haunting. I am sure I’ve never seen a war movie with as intense and sorrowful death scene.
I have a problem with this list of ‘interesting stuff’ – I got it as an email years ago and probably none of it was verified – or the stats are out of date.
I’ve put up some that are on the interesting or funny side (to me) but won’t vouch for accuracy
Such lists, while often being compiled with the best intentions can over simplify, by declaring absolutes that are not. They can also leave out context that is quite important. And one does find the occasional out right error.
This is the case for even published lists such as the book of strange and fascinating facts of the Civil War that I have and use. I have found errors in it.
