I thought he might have thrown a clot as well. It certainly sounds like that is what happened. He likely was undergoing stent placement or an endarterectomy due to clots when he threw another. I read a while ago that anticoagulation is supposed to be a standard treatment started immediately upon admission to hospital. The reporting is that he had no pre-existing conditions. Likely he had a condition that he was not aware of. I would be curious to learn if he had mutations of his clotting factors or high homocysteine levels.

Wonder if he was given any medications – or only advised to call if he got worse or began to not be able to breathe.
The article also notes that he had none of the usual conditions that increase the difficulties of fighting it and so his case was surprising.
