It’s a mares nest around the world trying to find the right way to deal with the pandemic. The President is right. I read all the European and Asian news. One thing is clear, the PRC unleashed it around the world. Every country is trying to find therapeutics, mitigation and vaccines. They have some successes, then are knocked back.
The US has taken a lead on this with the financial wherewithal and medical expertise we have. Other countries are doing their part.
Just read another promising therapeutic from HK researchers, but they have limited capacity, re, financing, but experience with Sars. ?
The US is the only place that may pull all this research and experience together, not the UN that is compromised, not wild claims from Russia and China to have a vaccine.
The PRC has locked down 11million people in Qingdao the other day because of a few cases. Just wait a week when all the ‘golden week’ travellers hit home in China.
Quarantining is a blunt instrument and not so feasible in our republic. On the other hand, if too many refuse to practice mitigation, not just masks but the WHOLE package (distancing, barriers, surface/object disinfection and hand sanitation), the opportunistic pathogen will find a way to keep infecting.
Overall, I couldn’t agree with you more. The US has the money and the personnel, so the best treatments are statistically likely to be created here. Of course some individual genius in another country may also get a unique insight, and push the quest forward.
I wouldn’t be surprised if 2-5 years in future we get even better therapeutics that are new drugs concocted specifically against this virus. But that is a more expensive and slower process, so first we will be trying out adaptations of every already existent med used to treat any known symptom. Hydroxychloroquine was tried early on, and has now been eclipsed by other, more effective approaches. We currently use dexamethasone and other steroids to regulate the over-active inflammatory response accompanying serious cases of the disease. But if we develop efficacious new antivirals (the stuff to inhibit and kill the virus early and directly), the steroids and anti-inflammatories won’t be as necessary.

something that has bugged me about this Cuomo crime thing for a long time that seems to get mixed up depending on who is talking or perhaps both are true – some say that covid patients were SENT INTO nursing homes (suggesting they weren’t there to begin with but were sent to nursing homes after they got sick) – others say that covid patients were SENT BACK INTO nursing homes (suggesting they were already in these nursing homes, got sick, went to hospital, then sent back in)
My understanding is that both happened, just like both happened in MI. Patients were moved out of hospitals into facilities to free up hospital beds. In NYC the convention center and hospital ship were provided, but went mostly unused.
if BOTH happened, then why can’t people just say it.. it makes me very irritated when i hear they were sending covid patients BACK into nursing homes, when in fact they were also sending covid patients INTO nursing homes who were never there to begin with…. these two things make a huge difference in my mind .. both egregious but the second scenario pisses me off more than the first, if i had to pick one, that is.. but, as stated, neither had to happen..
