This petition is a silly idea that can’t possibly succeed. Under current law, social media companies are NOT “public space”. As private commercial entities, they don’t have a responsibility to publish all opinions, nor to be factual or reliable in all assertions. They are fully ENTITLED to censor if they want to. Read their Terms of Service. They have complete control over content.
It’s a voluntary contract. If you don’t like it, don’t participate. You don’t get to order them to be the kind of publisher YOU want them to be. They exist to function as marketing databases, to disseminate your personal info and target you for sales pitches of goods and services tailored to preferences you provide through “likes”, “pins” and upvotes.
Presidents can’t order them to “cease and desist”, and they can’t be regulated under the Defense Production Act, because they aren’t capable of making a defense-related product. Twitter, FaceBook, Instagram etc. publish voluntarily contributed content. If they disagree, think any of it is false and decide to restrict it, they can’t be held to a journalistic or academic publishing standard. They have no responsibility to be authoritative OR comprehensive about medical information. It’s just “Vox populi” sampling, their selection of approved content contributed by their users.
That may be, but the issue is that they CLAIM to be open forums, and are regulated as platforms, not publishers. They need to be subject to the same rules as publications if they are going to selectively regulate opinions.
Plus, while nobody has a problem with child porn and death threats being censored, most people do’t really want to be stuck in an echo chamber. These companies straight up lie to the government and to their customer base, and that does need to be addressed.
All that is static, and aside from the fact that presidents can’t tell private companies what to do, period.
The petition urges an action law does not allow.
They are classic monopolies of the most dangerous kind. Twitter and the other tech giants, collectively control the flow and content of all information and communications.
When we click “I agree” to their multi page user agreements, we forfeit all protections, privacy and rights.

I can picture overwhelmed election workers with crates full of ballots that need “further action” like phone calls and follow-up letters. Who is going to do all that work? What jurisdiction anywhere in this country has the staff or resources to do it?
It will be easier to just let the ballots through without question and be done with it. That will be the real outcome if this decision isn’t overturned, and I suspect this judge knows it.

I don’t see them turning out to pull the lever for Trump to get more lockdowns and mandates. This task force should be recommending that all restrictions be lifted. Just wait, Biden will run ads in PA, OH, MI, and WI saying that the shut downs could have been avoided if the administration had handled things better, and those ads will resonate. It’s BS, but so were the lockdowns and restrictions. Trump never should have gone down that road, and he definitely should not stay on it by pushing for more restrictions.
