Watching the flood videos is heart breaking because I’m so well acquainted with the Hill Country. I’ve driven those back roads for several decades now in my little vintage Alfa. To see what that flood has done to such an iconic place is hard to take.
The Hill Country is a few minutes drive from my backyard — I’ve told countless Not From Here visitors how Little Town Texas – Hill County is a genuine rural paradise . . . But this being Texas, it will be again.
What is slowly coming out are the accounts of people just showing up to help. This is not just a Texas phenomenon—it is a solidly American characteristic — same thing happened in the N/S Carolina floods (thinking of all the ‘choppers that just appeared to fly rescues) and also in the LA fires. These things happen BECAUSE WE ARE AMERICANS FIRST!!!

We had teenage door-kick challengers here in Silicon Valley more than a year ago…
One kid races up and kicks the front door, while his buddy videotapes from the street. They take off on their electric bikes/scooters.
At one house, the kick was enough to knock the door open, surprising the family. The father chased the kid but could not catch him. The kid was lucky. Even though a lefty, I think the neighbor would have administered some home-grown justice.
The kids were identified by home video, which was shown to the local junior highs and high schools. I am sure they received a slap on the wrist and a good lecture. They were lucky they did not kick in the wrong door.
A taught black wire stretched securely across the path, at about 12″ off the ground just in front of the first step up to the porch – or across the front edge of the porch between the vertical posts – should take care of the first fool who attempts this stupid stunt….

When my better half and I visited Puerto Rico in the early ’00s, we noticed most of the better single houses had iron bars over their doors and windows…and many had a fence or concrete wall around their yard with an iron front gate. At the time we thought it sad that so many had to live inside fortresses to guard against brazen criminals…. Of course they most likely thought nothing of it – was normal for them.
An old friend now lives in PR and, yes, they live in a well protected fortress. When we bought our house in ’91 our near-inner-city neighborhood was already fortn’ up. One of my student’s parents had this welding service . . . Didn’t think seriously about arming our household until after Sandy Hook. Then I joined the NRA and got serious about handguns and gun-ranges.
I understand – “near-inner-city neighborhood” comes with certain issues to guard against.

I want to illustrate to leaders of any organization how difficult it is to break the spell of individuality when leading Americans meant to operate as a unit.
I was teaching ROTC cadets in California years ago—smack dab in the epicenter of American individuality. I tried teaching tactics and skills to prepare them for Advanced Camp. But my words fell flat. They were completely absorbed with themselves. I’ll admit, my annoyance turned into rage.
So I turned to the only surefire method I knew to forge a unit—pain. In doing so, I broke every ROTC rule in place under then-MG Peggy Combs. She wanted us to coddle them into excellence. That doesn’t work. Anyone who’s been in the Army more than 5 minutes knows that. I didn’t care if I got fired for this.
I had 6 hours of PT and 2 hours of lab per week. 8 hours total. For 3 weeks I took them out to a field and made them sprint, bear crawl, low crawl—whatever I felt like
. And after every single individual rep, I asked one question: “Why do you want to be an officer in the Army?”
And after every rep, for 3 weeks straight, I heard answers like:
“I want to be the first man or woman to do X.”
“I want to be the first in my family to do Y.”
“I want to be better than everyone else.”
“I want to prove I can do it.”
Me me me me me.
The longer it went on, the angrier I got. I’ve smoked others and been smoked extensively. I knew I was crossing a line in this moment though. I wanted to break them. I wanted them to quit. Every time they failed to say what I was looking for, the exercises got harder. In my mind, I saw my brothers and sisters who died in battle due to bad leadership. I daydreamed about them during every rep. Their memory made the anger intensify.
Then finally, after one last rep, a cadet said:
“I’m here for the Soldiers I’ll one day lead. For everyone to my left and right.”
Or something more selfless to that effect. That was it. I walked off the field and dismissed them. I finally found them worthy to teach.
I added the “Miracle” clip because I don’t have footage of my own experience getting my individuality broken. But that scene speaks to me. I’m from Winthrop, Massachusetts. I know the Eruzione family. So it felt right to add the video below.
I’ve risked my career doing this kind of thing—turning up the heat to where it needed to be. Because I was taught, and still believe, war is binary. You win or lose. Live or die. How do you expect to destroy the individual without group suffering sometimes? You can’t make a good meal without heat. You can’t make elite Soldiers without it either.

My perspective on what happened in Texas:
This is nothing new or different from what has happened many times in the past. Texas goes through drought and flood phases and anyone that pays even a little bit of attention knows this fact.
Contrary to some partisan BS on “the news”, the National Weather Service provided more than adequate warning of flash flooding. The unnecessary deaths resulted from the State government failing to take adequate action to get people out of the flood plains and the failure of the adults in charge to react and to get their families and the kids out of harms way.
I mean think about it! Your in charge of a bunch of little girls at a camp that’s in the flood plain of a major river. Your downstream from where very heavy rains have been reported happening for over a day and multiple flash flood warnings have been issued. What were the prudent actions to take?

I would call it lack of giving a …..! Though their initial forecast was way off, the NWS put out the flash flood warnings in a very timely manner. For the counties along the Guadalupe the first of several was broadcast 12 HOURS before the surge. State and County officials failed to make the effort to get those people to move. And the people themselves, always thinking it happens to someone else be never them find out differently when it’s too late.
River went from normal to full flood stage in 45min, catching everyone by surprise. You had a perfect example of unpredictable nature upending taken-for-granted attitudes.

The children killed are victims of the camp adults’ fatal lack of critical thinking ability.
It’s been happening for at least two or three demographic generations – the public schools simply stopped teaching it, and instead teach students to learn via rote memorization.
What Garrison notes are facts that, by themselves, do not communicate a procedure to follow on July 4, 2025.
Instead, the facts describe meteorological history that recorded the results of heavy rains in that relatively flat river “valley.” It requires critical thinking to consider the historical facts of flooding caused by heavy rains and then deduce that one must evacuate from low lying areas adjacent to the river when heavy rains are falling that may approach levels similar to the rains that fell before prior historical floods. Camp management should be held liable for the failure to evac the children prior to the flooding. All the indicators were present.
GB, I live in Central Texas. The Hill Country and the Guadalupe River are very familiar locations to me.
Here’s what often happens with Texas “severe weather warnings” of all kinds . . . Storm warnings are issued . . . and all too often nothing at all changes where you happen to live.
Weather radar may show some heavy weather up or down country but, Texas being a big place, it doesn’t actually produce anything near your house. For most of the population the flood/high water warnings were background messages—made and then, from long experience, simply ignored.
So. Warnings were issued but, all too often people’s practical experience said otherwise. Honestly, I can’t remember a time where I got in my car and drove somewhere else because of a weather warning.
Ok. I guess it depends on whether a person lives or works near a river that floods occasionally or lives / works away from any such danger.
My sister lives in the high New Mexico desert and there is a relatively large arroyo directly behind her property that can get full of rushing water very quickly after an extended downpour. Her property, however, is high enough from the bottom of that arroyo that her house and all houses on her street have never been even close to being threatened by flash flood waters. I asked and she said that she checked before buying the house but there’s no history of that ever happening in her location.
Re: your sister is a smart lady. Did the same thing when we were looking at property. It can be surprising where flood plains are . . .

We studied Revelation for 30 weeks and God’s remnant remains. This world will go through deep destruction, but in Revelation 20 it discusses the dead rising from the oceans and from hades where the final disposition of souls is completed. So not everything of the earth is gone.
God brings Heaven down to earth and the New Heaven is established here in the New Earth.. the New Earth purged of evil and restored to God’s Perfection and Grandeur and God Will Dwell with man here. Revelation 21

“God is to be glorified, for making known himself to us. (1,2) And for making even the heavenly bodies useful to man, thereby placing him but little lower than the angels.” (3-9)
3-9 We are to consider the heavens, that man thus may be directed to set his affections on things above. What is man, so mean a creature, that he should be thus honoured! so sinful a creature, that he should be thus favoured! Man has sovereign dominion over the inferior creatures, under God, and is appointed their lord. This refers to Christ. I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

I was struggling a bit thinking of how I fit into the picture that is my new job. I realize it’s not about what I think, but what God Is Using me for there.
I need help with having joy through that journey and having complete faith in Him that He Will Equip me as needed with the right words and the right actions to accomplish whatever His Will May Be. I don’t want to be reluctant in His Plan… like Jonah getting thrown into the belly of a whale. I want to be a David confidently meeting the Philistine giant head on… or at least as long as he had his head on… ha ha!
Oh Father… for joy! Let us find the joy in all things and let me not grumble when there’s another something I don’t like. To what could I claim to know any better than Him?

Well said, rah. When I was teaching, I was invited to attend several Libertarian/Supply side economic conferences. Because I was recognized as teaching socially constructed reality (i.e. subjectivism) theory my work neatly dovetailed with the subjective value-is-a-social-construct theories of F.A. Heyek’s “Austrian Economics Theory”. Heyek’s ideas were the antithesis of Keynesian economics. Heyek’s basic premise is that something has “value” because people subjectively assign value to it. This is called “Definition Of The Situation”. Simply put, gold has value because people agree it is valuable.

Heavenly Father, as the day is drawing to its close I ask that Your continued love and presence be with me and with all that are Your children in Christ. Guard us through the long hours of darkness this night I pray, and keep us safe from all harm and dangers that may try to cross our threshold.

Loving Lord, as the day is coming to an end, I want to thank You for being with me in all that has taken place today. I also want to lay the whole day before You, asking that you would show me if there is anything that I have done to hurt or harm another person unknowingly, or if I have done anything that is displeasing in Your sight, or quenched the work of the Spirit in me, so that I may turn away from such things in the days that lie ahead.

Buy Real Gasoline, Not automobile gasoline!
I am still working my way through the Drone article from Saturday, so because of the age of the article there is not much use in me posting this there.
I have read some comments about storing gasoline and would like to share some information.
In the small town of Bandera, about 45 miles Northwest of San Antonio I was at STIHL® Outdoor Equipment dealer buying Real Gasoline, I do not have any STIHL® equipment, just Briggs and Stratton, Husqvarna, and such. The owner explained to me and another person who was there that using automobile gasoline, Ethanol, will void your STIHL® warranty.
I was buying Real Gasoline because the car gasoline gummed up the carburetor of a nearly new Husqvarna walk-behind line-trimmer with a Briggs and Stratton engine. The dealer charged me nearly a hundred dollars in 2017 to clean and rekit / rebuild the carburetor.
Later, back at the STIHL® dealer refilling my gasoline jugs (I had ran out of the 7 or so gallons of gasoline that I had bought two (2) years earlier. So I asked him how long this gasoline would last. Instead of him answering my question he asked a old man who was playing checkers with another man how long he thought that real gasoline would last. The old man said it would last at least seven (7) years.
The owner then told a story of finding a motorcycle in a barn and that the old man who was selling it said that he seriously did not believe that the engine would start because it had been sitting there for more than fifteen (15) years when his son died.
The STIHL® owner opened the fuel tank lid and sniffed. Then he observed that whoever had ridden it last had turned the fuel valve Off. So he opened the fuel valve, kicked the starter twice and the engine fired up and ran like it used to.
Finally, someone tipped me off that I could save about a dollar a gallon by going to a Walmart Fuel Station and buying the Blue Handle gasoline.
Yellow is Diesel
Red is Ethanol
Blue is Real Gasoline
Currently I store upwards of ten gallons for upwards of two or three years.
Another Very Important Tip!
Install a Fuel Shut Off Valve on all of your outdoor equipment. When you know that it will probably be several weeks or a few months before you are going to use that equipment, turn the valve Off and run the carburetor completely out of fuel.
Trust Me!
If it is something like a chainsaw, pour what fuel is in the tank out (figure out how you will collect and save the fuel yourself), then run the engine until the carburetor is out of fuel.

I keep saying; Trust Me because I have Paid The Price for my advice to you. I now have a carburetor kit for every piece of outdoor equipment I have (10 or more different kits) and also an extra carburetor for a few of them that is already cleaned, rebuilt, and ready to go.
At least six (6) are Four Stroke engines and at least four (4) are Two Stroke engines. I am intimately acquainted with each and every one of those carburetors, so Trust Me!
Good points. BTW: QT gas stations all have a single pump that sells “real” non ethanol gas. It’s a little more expensive but, if you have a vintage car, it can stay in a gas tank indefinitely. As a so-so alternative STABIL additive has a long-term version of their additive that will stabilize ethanol for up to 2 years.
Good advice. Don’t put ethanol in small engines ever. Ever, ever.

Quieting A Generator
I am still working my way through the Drone article from Saturday, so because of the age of the article there is not much use in me posting this there.
I have read some comments about a generator being loud and such.
First off,

In other words, do online research.
But I can share some of what I have learned.
Step One
There are kit, manifolds, adapters, and such available online, select what works for your generator.
Step Two
The actual running of the engine is something that you need to address, that many people overlook.
Step Three
You will need some way to extending the exhaust pipe some distance, depending upon what you decide to do.
Step Four
Silencing The Engine
Build something similar to a Doghouse. Search online for high temperature wall silencing blanket type material. Nail, glue, screw the blanket material to the floor, walls, door, and ceiling keeping in mind that you will need ventilation because that engine needs air to breathe and air flow to cool.
Step Five
Silencing the Exhaust.
My personal preference is silicone tubing because it will absorb some of the piston firing noise. At this point you can either use a muffler or even split to two mufflers from a vehicle or run the exhaust into a barrel of water, which is the other reason I prefer 2-Inch silicone tubing. Run the silicone tubing to near the bottom of the barrel of water.
All of this information is easily available online if you will just invest the time searching
Hint: Some Go-Fast boats use 4-Inch or larger silicone tubing for their exhaust that goes under water and it muffles very well.
Note: Some Go-Fast boats manifold the exhaust upwards to large straight pipes pointing rearward and those are so loud that you can Feel the sound until they are a distance away from the dock.
During a SHTF event, whatever you do keep your lights Off at night, keep your mouth Shut, and Do Not Let anyone know that you have electricity. Crazy people will do crazy things when they are desperate.
