While I was listening, one of my sweet little black kitties, Nigel, sidled up against my leg and rolled over for a tummy rub – and stayed there the whole time! Listening to the music, I think. We are just home from a drive-in movie. Kung Fu Panda IV (uuugh) and Twister with Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. Fun to see that one again and it was a nice moderate evening here. Holding onto the good days, while we fight the not-so-good.

Interesting that you mentioned MELS had been purchased by someone else. The same owner we had known before was still there last night. The elder gal was working the box office.
Still small town, old fashioned, and we enjoyed it.. but the movie offerings have changed. Some focus on horror, which we don’t do… so wondering if the old owners are just working there and manning it?
They are a Christian family and tend to be more on the tame side, but the offerings lately are much more secular. Of course, Hollyweird isn’t putting out any good stuff.
Our 100+ year old theater here downtown has a stage and also has a screen mounted up there.
Of course it closed during WuFlu, was empty then sold & had some rehab and is open again. (have only been there once for a solo showing of the first new star wars movie as an employees sister was manager & they also picked up pizza from me to sell during select movies)
They only show a few first run movies, doing the same as the drive-ins, running old movies on the big screen & making money off the concessions as they always have … probably make more … as they probably make more off ticket sales than they ever did off first runs.
I’m told that they now run some stage plays downtown.
My hours of operation are rather adverse to the traditional schedule for movie/entertainment watching.

I just finished the “Rise of Catherine the Great” on Amazon freevee streaming. It was terrific and I enjoyed the Russian storylines. Not sure how accurate it is historically, but it was captivating, and the scenery, costume, and scripting was excellent. Alas, it’s finished, and I must find another guilty pleasure. I have so many good books to read, but my mind is weary, so it’s hard to concentrate.

Storytelling. One thing I loved about teaching anthropology is that I so enjoyed telling stories. Since my class populations were constantly change semester to semester, I could count on having “new” audiences. My students in turn always told me how much they enjoyed my stories.
Having done this in class for several decades, I’m afraid I have an ingrained habit that’s hard to break. Old guys telling stories over and over again makes for pretty boring conversations.
Had lunch yesterday with a best friend of many, many years. Alas, she’s heard all my stories and now interrupts when I repeat myself . . . It’s ok, however—I’ve told her (along with several of my oldest friends) to stop me if I launch into something she’s heard—usually several times, she now teases me. 🙂
My friend has a birthday coming up. I was talking to her about how existential an experience simple knife sharpening could be. Like sippin’ whisky, it is one of rural life’s genuinely simple pleasures. When I explained how my father taught me, she told me she’d never really learned knife sharpening skills. Humm . . . birthday present time.
I went on Amazon, found a 600 x 2000 grit quality stone, some proper honing oil, and this cool frame that holds the knife while you work it with the stone. She was delighted to have a good sharpening kit.
Now that I’m old and living alone, I appreciate more than ever the value of good friends. .And she is definitely one of those . . . When I was depressed, she was one of the women in my life who stepped in and saved my old butt.
Some “Little ‘Tink” news . . .Little ‘Tink continues to amaze. To just stop being a feral kitty and at 4 years of age suddenly turn into a genuinely affectionate adult cat is a genuinely positive change in my daily life. It’s like she kinda figured I needed a more attentive companion. So, she became a c-a-t.
Just now, as I was about to come out to my study, she came running into the kitchen and jumped into my lap expecting /demanding a head, ear, and neck rub. She has this look . . . It’s like she already knows I’ll drop whatever I doing and give her a good head and neck scratch. Sigh, she knows me well. Good kitty.
Garrison, you have evolved into the purr-fect pet for Tink. I think she has you trained! ❤️😻

Not true at all. I like your stories a lot! I think many could be made into some pretty good movies.
You know, we captivate our children when they are small by reading stories. Mostly at bedtime, or to calm them down in the evening times, to prepare them for a restful night. But, I believe adults like stories, too. It’s probably many of us come here to learn a little something-something about one another’s lives that is outside the normal of our own.
We learn a lot from each other. I am blessed by it a lot.

When it was just my teenage son and I (both of us working fulltime plus), we loved going to the drive-in together to reconnect. Food, drinks, laughter, and a sort of weird sense of solitude in the cocoon of our car. I don’t think there are any drive-ins left in our neck of the woods.

Agree so much! This drive-in is only $25 a carload. We split a Jimmy John’s tuna sandwhich with all the veggies and hot peppers, two large pickles, and Sprites. Head off to the movies. Concession stand is terrific and really reasonable. Plus, something about the stars and the night air. Even with the movie playing the stars are out in full Glory.
How is Mr. Corny, our Lloyd, doing? Hopefully improving day by day…

Enjoy EVERY MINUTE with your precious daughter. Man alive, I wish my kids were still little and at home…..
Wish I could help with ideas on the sleep. I know you have mentioned severe back pain. I know you’ve tried a million remedies, too. Have you also tried Magnesium supplements? Breaks up the lactic acid in muscular aches. I only know this from my car accident.
Had back pain, but praise be to God, my herniated disc basically evaporated, and my spine is straight as an arrow, so once the disc disappeared… no more pain. Miraculous.
Now, my hip and neck from the car accident… on the other hand. Lots of Omega 3, Magnesium, and surprisingly the low dose Naltrexone 4.5 mg that is being prescribed for long Covid brain / olfactory nerve issues… is also helping quell the pain, which is an awesome side effect. Not foolproof by any means… but knock on wood… I’ll take the small successes.
As for my precious daughter, she is… but with a teenager comes teenage problems and right now we have a bit of hell going on. Nonsense inspired and rooted at the school and I’m finding out the hard way… but finding out, I am.
My daughter is 18 going on 15… so there’s that. She sees what’s going on in the world and she’s not eager to get out in it. She’s afraid to grow up. She’s not spoiled by any means… but she simply doesn’t like what is out there and wants to hide at home and in small, controlled environments. I get it.
I’ve found a small college. Small, unique program. Just need her to qualify.

Remember that twice so far this year we have seen the actual outbreak occur outside the moderate and enhanced areas and once when they issued a very rare “high” probability there was no outbreak.
But the fact is conditions will be very conducive for the formation of sever thunderstorms that produce tornadoes. The meteorologists I pay attention to have been warning about the conditions for severe weather this week will bring for the central plains and into the Ohio Valley.
So today is just the first day of a week that has the potential for us to see multiple tornado outbreaks.

Israel Update:
I took a bit of a break because things were getting too annoying and misunderstood.
Some lies had to be looked at including from our own side. I will explain, just follow bellow.
-Despite of the slow progress in Rafah towards the center of the city, because of the visit of Jack Sullivan tomorrow, combat is going on in East Rafah and neighborhoods are being conquered and cleaned up, Hopefully after Salivan leaves the IDF will speed up towards the center. The Philadelphi Corridor (strategic area between Gaza and Egypt) has already been conquered (probably about a half), the city is almost empty, the mayor admits that since the operation began about 650,000 evacuated, and a total of 950,000 evacuated.
IDF forces are in combat at some 6 neighborhoods, tanks and air support are taking down buildings in East Rafa as the forces are progressing. At least 700 tunnel shafts were located and tens of tunnels. About 50 that cross from Gaza to Egypt.
The conquering of Rafah is expanding. Another Brigade entered combat ,
Reserves Brigade 12 (Infantry) is joining the Givati Brigade (Infantry), the Commando Brigade and Brigade 401 (tanks).
There are now 4 Brigades in combat that is twice of what it was at the beginning.
Now that about a million evacuated there is not much to talk about at Sallivan’s visit as far as Rafah is concerned.
Note: Rafah is large. We are far off from getting all of it. As I said earlier I predicted the “slow Salami System” of slicing piece by piece to reduce international noice and increase pressure on Hamas as far as a hostage deal. The Commando Brigade are there, they were instrumental in Khan Yunis and are top soldiers. So does the Givati Brigade.
-The Commander of Hamas over all the logistics in Rafah was assassinated.
-Division 98 (Paratroopers, tanks and Commando) conducted fierce combat in Jabalia (North city in Gaza that was already conquered and Hamas reformed there as civilians moved back in ). In the past week the Division conquered Jabalia again and killed at least 200 terrorists. Over 60 captured.
It took a week and this is what I mentioned earlier about “lies”.
The Defense Minister and Bibi and the IDF are talking about “the majority of Hamas Battalions dismantled and only Rafah and another area are left”.
In reality some Hamas Battalions are getting reformed in areas were they were defeated before. They have also many new recruits. I also watched a video of the Defense Minister visiting in Gaza and a lower commander is telling him that “they are not feeling that the cities are completely cleaned up and they conquered the key streets but there are more terrorists around.” In Jabalia we had some 20 RPG(anti tank missiles) attacks per day. It was a very tough fight. There were also fights again in central Gaza.
The Chief of Staff previously presented it as “initial conquest with repeated raids and cleanups”. It’s hard to give a precision report. I assume that the truth is in the middle.
It’s not a complete lie that the Hamas Brigades are dismantled but when you let population back in you get a level of reformation of the enemy.
-Reports of IDF making four fortifications, positions, strategically located to protect the border area and deeper in Gaza. Indicating preparations for long term military control over Gaza.
-The new port in Gaza that Biden built for them for humanitarian aide is now operational.
– The bodies of 4 of the kidnapped were rescued from Gaza. One of them is Shani Luke (some are familiar with her from 10/7, good looking young lady who was murdered at the party in Nova festival and her body was paraded in the streets of Gaza).
Now there are 129 kidnapped in Gaza dead and alive.
-IDF operated in Zeitoun district of South Gaza. One of the last areas which were never conquered . The Air Force and tanks attacked over 100 targets over the past day. At least 90 terrorists killed. Tunnels and arms production factories were destroyed.
-At North Israel Hezbollah attacked 11 times. Rockets. In one of the attacks they fired about 75 rockets at an IDF’s logistical base. No direct hits. Two injured civilians around the area. IDF attacked from the Air tens of targets in South Lebanon. One attack killed a senior commander in one of the terror groups in Lebanon. Not Hezbollah. Bibi just met the mayors of the cities in the North. They are desperate. Note: Bibi must give a date of when this problem will be resolved. I assume Gaza must be under control first. Also munitions must be available.
-A report from Politico that Biden has been withholding munitions already since Dec 2023.
-Jack Salivan is visiting Saudi Arabia. Will arrive at Israel on Sunday. Expected to pressure Israel about reduction of bombardments in Rafah and about another hostage deal and discuss the “Day after”. After Gaza is all under control.
-Beni Gantz the leader of the party that leads the polls and is a member of the government and of the War Cabinet, gave Bibi an ultimatum until the 6/6/24 or he leaves the government.
He is asking that Israel gets a ruling force over Gaza that is not Israel. He is talking about US,EU,Palestinians, Moderate Arabs, not Palestinian Authority. This is not clear as no one said such a force is doable.
I guess it’s his intention. He also had other requests that are not hard to follow. But one of his requests is impossible, that is recruitment of all the Ultra-orthodox religious Jews to the IDF like the rest of the population (ages 18). This is not possible as if Bibi does it he loses his coalition and the nation will have to go to elections. Gantz also to pose a deadline as to resolving the situation in the North. The deadline is Sep 2024.
If Gantz leaves Bibi still stays in power. The government without Gantz has 64 of 120 seats.
Note: Gantz is perceived in the Israeli right as a “proxy of Biden”. He denies it but we think that he will follow the Palestinian State intent. He appears center right but is really lefty.
-A terrorist tries a stabbing attack in the West Bank. Approached a soldier and got shot dead.
-Israeli Air Force took out a few terrorist who were planing to go out on an attack. One was a known prominent terrorist. IAF Killed two. This is the first time in years if not decades since using a jet fighter in the West Bank.

I’ll point to one thing you mentioned: in East Rafah alone, IDF has discovered FIFTY (50) tunnels connecting Gaza to Egypt! That is how Hamas rearms itself, among other nefarious activities. I heard that Egypt had told Israel all the connecting tunnels were closed. And, OBiden’s new pier / port is another way Hamas may receive arms if Israel doesn’t search incoming shipments carefully.
David, you are amazing continuing to dig, translate and write these Updates! And, the videos you find are important and much appreciated. The second to last video you posted (before taking your break), saying “This guy is correct” was riveting.

64 majority is huge. We used to have 61 or 62. It was remarkable when it happened.
Additionally the polls in Israel are all a Liberal manipulation. Every elections it shows Bibi loses and he wins. They use it to show that “the people are against right wing policies”.
The 64 were before Gantz and his party joined. So If they leave it’s not a huge problem.
I do believe that Gantz may win a new elections if it happens now because he pretends to be Center but he has a Liberal background so it is probably a manipulation to steal right wing votes. It’s not going to be easy for him and he will get a strong counter fight.
The right voters are pretty smart. But there are many disappointed with Bibi so there is a vacuum. Or Bibi may show some progress and get back the voters.
The main risk for the government is from the two ultra-orthodox parries who makes their decisions based on their Rabi leaders who are not politicians. Those leaders see the world completely differently. For them people who study religion and pray every day long hours are more valuable than soldiers and are protecting the nation this way. Try to force them into the military and they will break the coalition. From their point of view many who did join the military left the religion. The military is not built to accommodate their strict male/female separation, prayers and study time and other duties. Therefore Bibi would rather lose Gantz than follow his demand to recruit everyone. He will try to make them give more recruits but still a lot less than ideal.
The left knows it’s a weak spot and is pushing on it. It’s a weak spot because it’s unjust that some have mandatory service and some not.
Right of Bibi there are two parties. Those are vilified by Biden and the Liberals as “extremists”.
If Bibi fails to do what’s needed to win the war or goes towards a Palestinian State they will break the coalition. If Gantz leaves Bibi will depend on them more.
One of them are religious but not extreme and have a very high % of followers in the West Bank settlements and in combat units. They are patriots from a religious motivation. The Economy minister (Smotrich) is from their party. The other one is a mix of religious and secular led by Ben Gvir (The Internal Security Minister – over Police). Many in the right are mad at Bibi that he put in the War Cabinet people from Gantz’s party and not from the right wing parties. It affects the hesitations in the war.
The US will go crazy if Bibi stays with Ben Gvir and Smotrich.
Bibi had Gantz join because he represents a high % of the soldiers and he wanted unity.
I personally think that Gantz should go. He is like a proxy of Biden and operates on old doctrines that led to 10/7.
Him and his second who sit in the War Cabinet are both ex-Chief of Staffs. They both carry responsibility to minimizing the IDF and making it a “small technological army”. They closed tank Brigades and we are now in scarcity of those Brigades. They were all from the old “concept” that believed that “the IDF is deterring enough” and there won’t be any more serious wars.
This reminds me a bit of Trump who hired Deep State operatives into his Administration while firing others like Bannon. His hiring of the RINO AG made it impossible to force Ethics and Justice on the forces of evil.
Unfortunately Bibi carries responsibility too. Therefore best for the right would be takes the war to a win and get replaced. Everyone responsible to 10/7 will be dismissed eventually. From the Prime Minister to the leadership of the Military. Eventually. I hope the answer is satisfactory.

“Shall anguish…? – can God’s love hold when everything says that His love is a lie, and that there is no such thing as justice?
“Shall famine…?” – can we not only believe in the love of God but be more than conquerors, even while we are being starved?
Either Jesus Christ is a deceiver and Paul is deluded, or some extraordinary thing happens to a man who holds on to the love of God when the odds are all against God’s character. PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
