Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

The 4th music video I ever made, back in 1984/5. I saw some other Starsky & Hutch videos and HAD to try it. No way back.
Starsky and Hutch – Moon Shadow – Cat Stevens
This was the 2nd Star Trek music video I made, and the sixth music video of any kind. It was shown in Creation Con large auditoriums between guests. 1984/5.
Star Trek – The Rose – Bette Midler
Love Yeoman Rand 😍 👍 ❤ 😎
Saw her at a Star Trek TOS Convention and got an autographed photo of her which I framed and still have today 💕
YES!!!!!!!!!!!! Great taste! She was a wonderful guest. And seemed to be a lovely lady. I have one, too. Perhaps we met in lines.
This was my 14th video. Because it was usually minor guests at Creation Cons, I tried to make videos for those minor characters. Leslie Fish is a famous “filker” whose work was always strong and often funny. I was thrilled she came up to our room once at a con to watch my work on her song.
Star Trek – Engineers Hymn – Leslie Fish
This was our 100th video and was made by my husband. He had just put a studio together for me at IBM Research and taught himself the 3/4″ special effects equipment by making this music video, and then teaching me. Prior to that, I had learned to edit off the pro equipment in a closet where I was forced to have excellent posture because, if I slumped, the camera would catch me in the back. He had gotten permission to drag two 1″ video machines out of research projects that were no longer using them. It was the most wonderful few years.
Star Wars – One Step Forward – Desert Rose Band
Great story, Mary. Thanks for posting. 🙂
And these were our research labs. Yorktown was where I was hired in. 200 acres and a building built by Aero Saranin with stone quarried from the property. They shipped us out to Hawthorne when they expanded the wet labs. And that was where my video project was. Because we were cheap, I was B-roll so was always practicing pans and zooms and following objects once I got my own camera. Almaden was the California lab. Zurich came to me at Hawthorne to make their videos for my magazine, but I trekked out to CA by train to make Almaden’s.
IBM Research, Yorktown NY – Nightnoise- 1987
IBM Research, Hawthorne NY – Winston – 1988
IBM Research, Almaden CA – David Jameson – 1989
Sorry, missed Yorktown’s link. That was the greatest building to work in. The corridor along the glass window was spotted with research areas with whiteboards to encourage researchers to leave their offices and discuss things while looking out at this magnificent scenery.
IBM Research, Yorktown NY – Nightnoise- 1987
I needed this conversation for B-roll for my John Cocke video. So I stuck John with Chris Stephenson in front of that window, May 1990. I had the most wonderful fun with things like this and crawling around in the office of the designer of FORTRAN, shooting up into people’s faces.
Paul Michael Glaser runs oddly.
I’ll assume that was due to his pants being too tight. That was one of his top popularity traits with us ladies.
His bigger problem was that the show didn’t understand police tactics much at all. When either was in a gunfight, he’d jump to the middle of the corridor so the camera would get a good view, and THEN start shooting. We brought people from the shooting range to my friend’s home for Thanksgiving dinner one year – miniaturized turkey targets for name cards – and I showed some Starsky & Hutch for their professional appraisal. They were laughing their heads off at the bad tactics. I bought some police tactic books and was convinced they were right and the S&H directors DID need a consultant.

And one more… one that isn’t really one, but which shows Guy Clark’s brilliance. A concert from several years ago in Northern California… Singing and talking about who he really is.
Guy and Verlon at their best. Thanks for posting this. 🙂
Have a blessed Sunday all.
Those that can, enjoy this little interlude of warmer than average weather because the worm is going to turn hard in the near future.
It will start in the western US and move across to the east. Dec 6-14. Then Europe, then the far east. All are likely to be in polar air at the same time in about 3 weeks. Northern Snow extent is already nearly what it was 56 years ago on this date. It is going to be a block buster ski season again. It was a record ski season for Australia and E. Australia has been having a much colder than average spring.
All of that before the meteorological winter sets in for the NH on December 21st.
The potential nightmare of extreme cold in Europe and parts of the US when home heating fuel sources are expensive, if available at all, appears to be imminent. And when the death and suffering comes, the same Bozos that have caused those shortages, will blame it on “climate change”. Just watch.
I will take your warning seriously. Husband says natural gas went from .99 to 1.17 this year, so far.
One small trifle … meteorological winter starts December 1; astronomical winter, December 21. The meteorological seasons always all start on the first day of the month (March, June, September, & December), while the start of the astronomical seasons vary, usually between the 20th and the 22nd.
It’s not a trifle to me Leon. I got them backwards and this is a big mistake. Thanks for pointing it out.
While having lunch at my favorite Mexican restaurant (country sausage, egg, and cheez tacos) I was momentarily captivated by the group of 6 attractive young women in the next booth. I was immediately struck by, first, the simple fact that they were all stunningly beautiful young women in the early 20’s. Perhaps former high school friends, now in town for the Thanksgiving holidays? What impressed me the most was how comfortable they were with both themselves and with each other. They were completely and un-selfconsciously enjoying their moment.
Then it hit me: These were Texas girls who were raised right. They were the products of Texas culture where young women were shown from an early age how to be both self-confident and self empowered as individual persons. I have to say, I felt enormous joy at being in their presence. I also felt a touch of nostalgia because they all reminded me of my former students—the young women who passed through my classes and who then went on to successful carriers and successful marriages.
As I rose to leave, I decided to compliment them. Affixing them with a stony teacher-stare I said “I have to say “. . . They all looked at me questionally . . . ” Y’all are having entirely too much fun!” This being 6 Texas girls, they got the joke and immediately dissolved into laughter. I then said “Long may you wave . . . With people like you around, there’s hope for the world.” I departed with a full heart, confident that my words were correct.
I LOVE your stories. Your writing is superb and takes me right into the moment. THIS is what I wish writing about history and culture was about. Entertaining. Educating. Links to memories we all share. Please hear me clapping enthusiastically.
Thanks, Mary. Dyslexia makes me a poor proofreader, alas . . . 🙂
Well, it doesn’t interfere with the deeply spiritual message in your stories or the warm heart & soul from which they are obviously told. Carry on, sir.
🙂
What a beautiful encounter!
Maybe not for the rest of the country given the rapid decline, but those girls give Texas hope…
Their parents did well!
They sure do. My thoughts exactly. 🙂

O COME, O COME, EMMANUEL
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;
And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
Isaiah 11:1-5
there’s no words that can describe the beauty of that .. thank you.
( the whole post, actually)
this is the version i have that i listen to every year….
Thanks for the thought and the hymn, dreamboat annie.
I wait all year for this bible verse…
Luke 2:11
8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Aggiegirl, yes, lovely verse, lovely time of year.

The Consecration of Spiritual Power
…by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. —Galatians 6:14
If I dwell on the Cross of Christ, I do not simply become inwardly devout and solely interested in my own holiness— I become strongly focused on Jesus Christ’s interests. Our Lord was not a recluse nor a fanatical holy man practicing self-denial. He did not physically cut Himself off from society, but He was inwardly disconnected all the time. He was not aloof, but He lived in another world. In fact, He was so much in the common everyday world that the religious people of His day accused Him of being a glutton and a drunkard. Yet our Lord never allowed anything to interfere with His consecration of spiritual power.
It is not genuine consecration to think that we can refuse to be used of God now in order to store up our spiritual power for later use. That is a hopeless mistake. The Spirit of God has set a great many people free from their sin, yet they are experiencing no fullness in their lives— no true sense of freedom. The kind of religious life we see around the world today is entirely different from the vigorous holiness of the life of Jesus Christ. “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one” (John 17:15). We are to be in the world but not of it— to be separated internally, not externally (see John 17:16).
We must never allow anything to interfere with the consecration of our spiritual power. Consecration (being dedicated to God’s service) is our part; sanctification (being set apart from sin and being made holy) is God’s part. We must make a deliberate determination to be interested only in what God is interested. The way to make that determination, when faced with a perplexing problem, is to ask yourself, “Is this the kind of thing in which Jesus Christ is interested, or is it something in which the spirit that is diametrically opposed to Jesus is interested?”

The turning point of a turning point.
I am one of those in the minority which views the Guadalcanal Campaign as a turning point equal in importance to the sinking of the four fleet carriers of the elite Kido Butai often also referred to as “Nagumo Force” for it’s commander Vice Admiral Nagumo Chuichi during the battle of Midway.
Midway was a defensive stand. It’s greatest cost to the IJN (Imperial Japanese Navy) were the four carriers themselves and much of the cream of the crop of the aircraft maintenance personnel that has been aboard them. Few of the highly trained and experienced pilots and aircrew that survived their missions were lost and and so flew again. At that time the aircraft were replaceable.
The only other major loss of for the IJN in that battle was the heavy cruiser Mikuma. The heavy cruiser Mogami would be in drydock for months having her bow replaced due to a collision but would fight again.
Even with the loss of those 4 carriers the IJN maintained a superiority in numbers in all classes of war ships. While now only having a slight advantage in Fleet Carriers, in all other major classes the IJN outnumbered the USN in considerable numbers.
And she still had the majority of the best trained pilots on earth that she had started the war with.
So the Japanese high command maintained it’s offensive strategy and prepared to carry out the “FS Operation” which was aimed at isolating Australia by taking Port Moresby, New Guinea and occupying islands in the Southern Pacific to cut the logical sea lanes between the Australia and the US.
So Japan maintained a significant superiority in number of trained troops, arms of all types, Naval units, and in aircraft.
In short, after Midway Japan still maintained the strategic initiative. It was the five month battle for Guadalcanal, fought in all dimensions, that would change that. From the time when they made the decision to evacuate their starving diseased troops from Guadalcanal the Japanese would remain on the strategic defensive in the Pacific until the end of the war.
Rah, where did Japan lose those highly trained pilots? That is never said in the Navy centric view of the Pacific War. But I also don’t see it in stories of MacArthur’s Air Forces or those of the Army Air Forces that supported the Navy’s Island Wars. But everybody says they were gone by the Marianas Turkey Shoot.
I find a very consistent theme with the Japanese Navy where when they win, they declare victory and go home before they achieve their goals. From Pearl to the Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors they left when True Decisive Victory was there to be grasped. Reading about Guadalcanal is where I first noticed. Decisive victory over the U.S. Navy, with an invasion fleet ready to be destroyed, but the risk of being caught by air attack was too high. So they take the lessor victory and sail home.
The Japanese Army was much more willing to take serious risk. Such as being greatly outnumbered and almost being without supplies when they took the British surrender at Singapore.
Anyways, that effort to take Port Moresby is interwoven with our victory at Midway and our victory at Guadalcanal. The battle at Corral Sea reduced active Japanese carriers to 4 and American carriers to 3 for Midway, as well as stopping the invasion of Port Moresby. Would we have still won if it was 6 to 4? They conducted an intermediate invasion at the tip of New Guinea. And they invaded at Buna so they could take Port Moresby by land. And they were still throwing troops into both Buna and Guadalcanal late in 1942.
In some regard, these Japanese efforts against Australia were not thought through. As if the planners didn’t think they would ever face resistance. It took them way too long to put in air bases that could have supported their efforts at Guadalcanal and suppressed our Cactus Air Force. All of these operations were conducted via Rabaul, Navy and Air, which was under assault via our Air, so often the forces were based elsewhere and were staged through Rabaul. Both sides were operating through incredibly long supply lines. Yet they had been suppressing Port Moresby from the time they took Rabaul, so they knew what efforts would be needed if these operations were challenged.
(Our Air Force was operating out of Northern Australia and staging in Port Moresby to attack Rabaul.)
1st off the Japanese Navy and the government kept the losses at Midway mum. The wounded that returned were isolated in the hospitals and kept incommunicado and the sailors and officers that were granted shore leave were ordered to keep their mouths shut. Navy did not inform the Army of their true losses at Midway.
Thus after Midway the Japanese Army was setting far more ambitious goals than the Navy was prepared to support. The Army wanted to actually invade Australia and take the population centers along the east coast.
Both the Army and IJN thought the invasion of Guadalcanal was nothing more than a raid and consistently way underestimated the strength of the Marines put ashore for the first month. Their estimates were it was only 1,000-2,000 troops when actually there were about 11,000 put in at Guadalcanal and a few thousand more on Tulagi and Florida Islands. It was only after the destruction of the 2,000 man Ichiki detachment of the 28th Infantry Regiment in the battle of the Tenaru that they finally started to realize that the invasion was a counter offensive and the Army and Navy started to cooperate more fully in an effort to retake the island. But the Japanese 17th Army did not have the necessary assets handy to mount a large counter landing and it took some time to gather them and to set up a command chain aimed specifically at taking back the island.
This period of grace was critical because it allowed Vandegrift the time to get Henderson field at least nominally operational despite the fact that none of the heavy construction equipment had been off loaded.
One cannot understand this battle and why the US won it without understanding how important intelligence was. The coast watchers and a significant investment in signal intelligence and the willingness of the Allied commanders to effectively use that intelligence were crucial advantages without which the outcome almost certainly would have been quite different. It was the ability to know what the enemy was up to that neutralized the advantage the Japanese had in available strength. Intelligence and the effective use of the knowledge gained by it was a key factor in why the IJN with such superiority in strength and training actually accomplished so little with all its advantages early in the war. For a look into how intellegence on both sides effected the outcome of the Solomons campaign I would suggest Islands of Destiny: The Solomons Campaign and the Eclipse of the Rising Sun by John Prados (goodreads.com)
At the beginning of the war the IJN had the best trained military pilots on earth, bar none. The average Japanese pilot that attacked at Pearl Harbor had 350 hours of flight time and many were already combat veterans, having learned their trade in China verses an average of 150 hours for US military pilots who were relative novices.
.
Eight factors led to their demise.
Thanks.
8a. Proximity fuses.
Wasn’t a major loss of IJN pilots at the Marianas’ Turkey Shoot?
Yes, but the lopsided losses are taken as the result of the decline in quality of those pilots.
Exactly, and because by the time of the Battle of the Philipine Sea the US fighter aircraft were superior to anything the Japanese could produce in numbers and outnumbered them. US subs took out two of Ozawa’s best front line carriers.
After the war Tojo said that he knew the jig was up after the US took the Marianas but it was not in the Imperial Japanese character to surrender. After the Marianas Turkey Shoot until the end of the war, the Kamikaze became the dominant Japanese aviation attack weapon.
PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow, that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ.
AMEN.

“Never argue with those who buy ink by the barrel….” I think it means ‘don’t argue with the press’.
One of the twitter responders listed ‘crisis’ since the 1960’s…
Your interpretation is correct. However the larger implied warning is that the press will always be able to “out-shout” you, in that their publications reach far more people than your voice.
The statement, however, was made long before the invention of the internet, which has become a liberating “equalizer” of sorts for every individual in the nation.

Years ago, I heard this hymn in a movie, sung hauntingly by a bass-baritone, a single voice walking through a dark night in Victorian England. As I recall, it was a Dickens story. It was powerful. I can’t find the movie version, but here is the hymn:
GOD IS WORKING HIS PURPOSE OUT
Author – Arthur Ainger – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_Is_Working_His_Purpose_Out
Tune by Martin Shaw
Lyrics:
God is working his purpose out as year succeeds to year:
God is working his purpose out, and the time is drawing near;
nearer and nearer draws the time the time that shall surely be,
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.
From farthest east to farthest west, where human feet have trod,
by the voice of many messengers goes forth the voice of God:
‘Give ear to me, you continents, you islands give ear to me,
that earth may be filled with the glory of God,
as the waters cover the sea.’
Let us go forth in the strength of God, with the banner of Christ unfurled,
that the light of the glorious gospel of truth may shine throughout the world:
let us all fight with sorrow and sin, to set their captives free,
that earth may be filled with the glory of God,
as the waters cover the sea.
All that we do can have no worth, unless God bless the deed;
vainly we hope for the harvest-tide, till God gives life to the seed;
yet nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be,
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.
What can we do to work God’s work, to prosper and increase
the brotherhood of all mankind, the reign of the Prince of Peace?
What can we do to hasten the time, the time that shall surely be,
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea?
