Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

I’ve spent the last few months putting together a book on my grandfather, Jack Bell, a prospector who won and lost fortunes from Alaska down to Mexico – naturalist, angler, newspaper and magazine writer, law enforcement. Book’s too big. So while I’m figuring out what to do about that, thought I’d put up the occasional story of his to see if people find them interesting. Major categories that might interest you are prospecting/naturalist, fishing, the first air mail pilots, and crime.

Good story I enjoyed learning about the burro.
Thank you
Thank YOU for reading it! I’ve been living alone with these as I try to work out how to handle the pack of them, and it’s such a relief to have someone here with me.
I read every savory word and I thank you for sharing it!
How many children did he have and did you enjoy much time with him?
Part of my young life was spent in Sparks, Nevada at the foot of the Sierra Nevada.
His stories are greater than mine…I assure you. ?
I BELIEVE he only had the one son. Only know him by deep investigation as mother broke ties with his son so thoroughly when I was an infant. Alcoholic army poet reciting in Greenwich Village. I didn’t even know father! Took decades to find HIS book, longer to find his family! Father didn’t know his own father as HIS mother left Jack when father was 5. Because the name is so common, father thought his father died in a gunfight. Wrong Jack Bell. His father had been IN a gunfight at the bottom of the Independence mine in Colorado and that’s probably why father’s mother jumped to the conclusion it was her ex.
NO ONE’s stories are greater than anyone else’s. Every story is unique and wonderful. I grew up with storytellers and would sit at your feet, I assure you, with the same rapt attention that I sat at my other grandfather’s.
I like watching the shows chronicling the travails and triumphs of people living in the Alaskan bush.
Several of those that live the hunter-gathering life have mentioned over the last few years how the caribou migration patterns and behavior of various other game animals had changed due to the relatively warm winters the state has had the last few years.
Well, this year so far Alaska is actually colder than normal and weather patterns indicate it will probably stay that way. I hope those that were complaining before are happy now.
The wind was howling like the mill tails of hell; it was dark with the desolate darkness of an Alaskan night, and not a sound
could be heard but the whistling gale, with an occasional yelp of a Siwash or MacKensie river huskie, as they cried for admittance into some miner’s tent or dugout. The night was the very worst that had come upon us in the winter of 1900. I had just come from down the Ophir river a few miles, where I had cut some frozen willows to bake out for firewood. The description that always accompanies the story of how thoughts flash through the brains of a drowning man is a mild comparison to the ever present feeling that one has up in this God-forsaken country, that is as utterly apart from anything human as can be imagined. I am speaking of the Ophir country in the interior Nome waste. To get up there one must take a slow sailing craft from Nome and go down the coast to Golovin bay; then up the Neukluk river to Council City and then “mush” over the big range of hills – a short cut of sixteen miles – to the camps on Crooked creek, the richest diggings on the peninsula.
High spurs of hills break in every direction, with sugar loaves cut out here and there by little valleys and draws. All
destitute of timber of any description – nothing but a few bunches of low, water-soaked, red willows, that are the only
fuel obtainable. I could write volumes on the heart-breaking conditions of this awful country where hardy men go, with
rich placer diggings as the incentive for risking their lives. There were about twenty of us wintered up there in the
blackness of each twenty-four hours of every night. You must understand that there is no such thing as daylight or gleams
of twilight in the Arctic circle zone from the middle of November until the middle of March. Added to the morbid gloom are
the soul-chilling blizzards that are incessant in their shrieking fury. Talk about hellish parallels! Go up there and put
in one winter and partake of the hardships that are cheerfully endured by the Americans that have made the far Northern
country famous – by far the most famous – and yes, the richest placer mining country on earth.

Let me try that again. Sigh.

Mary
your stories remind me why
this Detroit born / raised girl ‘chickened out’ when offered a job in Alaska.
‘twould require flying around the state
Not that i couldn’t fly – or do the job offered
But SURVIVAL?
Plus I am very tuned to the sun. 24 hours of darkness for weeks (months?) on end ?? NO!
Even in Southern AK the daylight is very short. Idaho’s short days are troublesome enough
I hear you! I get depressed every time we return to standard time from daylight savings.
we get about 8 hours of daylight at the shortest day.
but i love the 16 or so hours of daylight at the longest day
hours give or take.
I too HATE the time change.
for some reason driving thru the different time zones is no problem – probably because one is moving with the sun.
Thanks for sharing this about your grandad.
Thanks for coming with me. The treehouse is a family that means the world to me.
This was simply wonderful to read! Thank you for sharing this.
You do know how to make my heart happy. Thankful for you, and all the tree family. That will top my list tomorrow as I’m ticking off all the reasons that life is good.

Nice aquarium.
Yes, they’re mine, mine, all mine!
The wonders of the human body are as infinitesimally small as the universe is infinitesimally vast. We are incapable of completely discovering either one.
Thinking of “today”, thinking of “now”:
2 Cor. 6:2 (cf. Isaiah 49:8)
“For He says: “In the acceptable time I listened to you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” Behold, now is the time of favor; behold, now is the day of salvation.
Isaiah 55:6-7
“Seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD, and He will have mercy on them, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”
Hebrews 3:15a (cf. Psalms 95:7-8)
“As it has been said: “If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts…”
Revelation 22:17 (cf. Isaiah 55:1)
“The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” Let the one who hears say, “Come!” And let the one who is thirsty come, and the one who desires the water of life drink freely.”
—
Thinking of why:
Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Romans 5:8
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
John 5:24
“Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life.”
—
Thinking of how:
Luke 18:13
“And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his chest, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’”
James 4:8a
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”
John 6:28-29
“Therefore they said to Him, “What must we do, that we may be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you should believe in Him whom He has sent.””
Mark 9:24b
“‘Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.'”
Acts 16:30-31
“Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household.””
Otherwise known as “Is it too late to say I’m sorry”
“For the devious person is an abomination to the LORD” – Proverbs 3:32
Well well, look who has slithered back into another treehouse Christian post with his anti-Christ cult.
Will you never cease trying to seduce believers in Christ away from the pure faith?
“They profess to know God, but they deny Him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.” – Titus 1:16

Please don’t sing sad songs for me
Forget your grief and fears
For I am in a perfect place
Away from pain and tears
It’s far away from hunger and hurt
Want and pride
I have a place in Heaven

A bit of history 400 years ago:
https://historyofmassachusetts.org/the-first-thanksgiving/
Edward Winslow’s account merely states:
“Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together, after we had gathered the fruits of our labors; they four in one day killed as much fowl, as with a little help beside, served the company almost a week, at which time amongst other recreations, we exercised our arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and amongst the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the plantation and bestowed on our Governor, and upon the Captain and others. And although it be not always so plentiful, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want, that we often wish you partakers of our plenty.”
So when did we stop having three day turkey festivals followed by feasting on deer?
But note, even after feeding themselves and the Indians for three days, the turkey lasted for five. Not only did they invent Thanksgiving, they also invented Thanksgiving leftovers.
Ah! A Thanksgiving BLAST! ???
oh how I miss him.
And to think the first time he was asked to record solo on a Beatles record (“I can’t sing, mate!”) Ringo was so nervous Paul had to stand next to him for support!
Come over this side for some peace.
Always liked Ringo, did anybody know that as a child he had stomach problems and the quack told his mother that he wouldn’t live past his twentys ! He quit the beatles once during a recording and skulked back days later not knowing what to expect , the others were waiting still jamming and when he walked in seeing his drum kit covered in flowers wiped the tears from his eyes sat down and got back to business.
Alan Parsons was 19 years old when he landed a job at the world famous Abbey Road Studios, an important first step on his journey to becoming a world class engineer, producer and artist. Following his beginnings with George Martin and The Beatles, his contribution to Pink Floyd’s classic ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’ earned him worldwide attention. As a producer he had many hits with Pilot, John Miles, Ambrosia and Al Stewart. Together with his manager and creative partner at the time, Eric Woolfson, he developed The Alan Parsons Project.
Wild turkeys are very smart birds. The same cannot generally be said for the white domesticated versions.
Btw because of the retention ponds required by building codes for large commercial buildings I quite frequently come across Canada geese in industrial parks. Many times I have sat waiting on a flock as they leisurely amble across the road in front of my truck or vehicles in front of mine. Only rarely though do I see one that is apparent road kill.
They have calendars. There will be turkeys everywhere around here until the day turkey season starts. Then they are gone. The day after it closes, they are back.
I have never hit a deer but I did hit a turkey once. It was getting off the ground and crossing the road. It hit my pickup truck at the top of the windshield at about 50 MPH, truck not turkey. It made a heck of a thump but continued flying off, turkey not truck.
Worked with turkey farmer who had to fly home because of storm that caused turkeys to jump all over each and many died.

DIRECTION OF ASPIRATION
“Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters…so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God.” Psalm cxxiii. 2
This verse is a description of entire reliance upon God. Just as the eyes of the servant are riveted on his master, so our eyes are up unto God and our knowledge of His countenance is gained (cf. Isaiah liii. 1. R.V.). Spiritual leakage begins when we cease to lift up our eyes unto Him. The leakage comes not so much through trouble on the outside as in the imagination; when we begin to say – “I expect I have been stretching myself a bit too much, standing on tiptoe and trying to look like God instead of being an ordinary humble person.” We have to realize that no effort can be too high.
For instance, you came to a crisis when you made a stand for God and had the witness of the Spirit that all was right, but the weeks have gone by, and the years maybe, and you are slowly coming to the conclusion – ‘Well, after all, was I not a bit too pretentious? Was I not taking a stand a bit too high?’ Your rational friends come and say – Don’t be a fool, we knew when you talked about this spiritual awakening, that it was a passing impulse, you can’t keep up the strain, God does not expect you to. And you say – ‘Well, I suppose I was expecting too much.’ It sounds humble to say it, but it means that reliance on God has gone and reliance on worldly opinion has come in. The danger is lest no longer relying on God you ignore the lifting up of your eyes to Him. Only when God brings you to a sudden halt, will you realize how you have been losing out. Whenever there is a leakage, remedy it immediately. Recognize that something has been coming between you and God, and get it readjusted at once.

November 24th Devotional
This is exactly what is happening in America today.
The media has no power, government has no power, religion has no power. Only we the people and we willingly allow our attention to be drawn away by some form of greed, or gluttony.
When you turn off Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, cnn, msnbc,Fox, all the rest what happens? It is quiet, it’s where God is.
The world is the swirling storm of lies that appear at your beck and call when you turn on your dumbphone.
Oh, so right on about turning off those other voices. They are clamoring noise that blocks the purer strain of God’s Voice.
I never did FB or Twitter but got other people to get off. FB is dangerous and contentions.
I’m not on any other newer sites. Don’t have the time or energy.
This is one of the rarest few I have joined here of late.
It is peaceful and there are some really spiritual people here.
Think I’ll hang around on a branch somewhere for awhile.
Glad you’re here!

BE MY VOICE
PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow, that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, amen.

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Declaring a Civil War is Easy in the Minds of Fools and Desirable in the Minds of Ideologically-Blinded Sociopaths
Secession of the state of North Carolina from the American Union occurred on May 20, 1861…
The election of Lincoln prompted secessionists to launch a series of statewide local meetings. The first was held in Cleveland County on November 12, the second in New Hanover on November 19. The movement was encouraged by the secession of South Carolina on December 20, 1860….
…
To counter the secessionist fervor, Unionists also convened. Holden’s Standard effectively upheld the Union cause and expressed hope for compromise. On January 29, the General Assembly decided to put the convention question to the people on February 28 and voted to send delegates to the Washington Peace Conference on February 4.
…
Answering the charge that disunion meant war, secession supporter A. W. Venable (1799-1876) of Granville County declared that he would “wipe up every drop of blood shed in the war with this handkerchief of mine”; this may have been the most memorable statement of the convention campaign.
