Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

At the bottom of this page, Dr. Simone Gold gives a brilliant speech. Watch from minute 51-55.
She explains her petition to stop vaccine mandates by private businesses. She emphasizes that it is not so much the government but rather the *private businesses* that need to hear our voice.
She has a petition that needs our signatures:

i am 67 and everyone I know is taking the “vaccine”! I’m not taking it. I can’t believe these people my husband included (who is the same age as I am and works 45+ hours a week) is taking a vaccine pushed by an illegitimate installed traitor and communist government!
WARNING: The following videos depect social gatherings which are examples of the kind of super-spreader events the benevolent administrative state and the good Dr. Fauci want to warn us about. Even though these actions appear, at least initially, to be fun and entertaining they cannot be allowed during this time of covid-virus crisis.
These scenes are shown as warnings. If you find yourself inadvertently involved in similar events, even by accident, leave immediately. Your government has determined that there is a direct correlation between having fun and spreading the virus. We simply cannot allow this to happen. Therefore, any activity that becomes fun must be curtailed immediately. We owe it to ourselves and to humanity to do this. Fun will be allowed when there is no more virus threat.
Always remember to wear your mask when in public! In fact, as Dr. Fauci suggests, you should always wear 2 or even 3 masks simultaneously. This will insure, as the science suggests, that you will increase your mask-wearing effectiveness from .04 % to a significant 1.2 % potential effectiveness.
Sadly, you are correct. I am afraid that our descendants will look at these old videos as strange and peculiar anomalies of a bygone era before masks and social distancing were mandated for your entire lifetime.
Sigh . . . it’s been a year. The kids have missed a year of school, a year of their life in lockdown.
It was all political. All a lie. All a panic pushed by those who hated President Trump and his voters.
And it’s ongoing . . . with no relief in sight.
The people in my area are STILL walking around outside with their masks on.
Dutiful, obedient, and terrified.
It’s a 99.9% survival rate.
Happily there are still free parts of America where this isn’t happening. People here in Texas tend to wear masks when businesses and local laws require it but not otherwise. Generally speaking there still is a lot of reluctance about mask wearing. I rarely see people in the outdoors wearing masks. A great many people here view mask-wearing as a lot of bunk. And justifiably so. 🙂
Not in comrade innscums wa. kids getting ready for cross country wearing muzzle , people with tiny tots and their lil custom muzzles. We’re starting to see a little hope, lots of amazoon drivers pulling down the muzzle while driving. 🙁
I have two young autistic grandson who have been jerked back and forth, in school, out of school. Therapies, which they desperately needed canceled for months. Summer programs eliminated. They won’t get that year back and unlike most neurotypical children they cannot kick the can down the road and be okay.
You are absolutely right. Whole populations of cognitively challenged kids (autism, learning disabilities, ADHD) have been lost in the past year. And it’s not just one year that they lost—it’s a good part of their young lifetime socialization that’s been lost.
It’s hard enough for cognitively challenged kids to benefit from schooling but expecting them to learn from watching computer screen is just criminal. It will take years for them to regain what they’ve lost. What schools should have done—and what some few actually did—-was create ways for the cognitively challenged kids to continue with essential-for-them face-to-face education.
Thank you. Yes, all absolutely true. They are losing ground and schools do not care, no one but the families and a few dedicated professionals do.
I feel for you & understand what you’re saying. I also have 2 special needs grandsons both have epilepsy, 6 year old is also autistic & ADHD. The time away from their special needs classes really set them back, especially 6 year old! When they returned to in class he was only getting about 8 hrs week in class time, just not enough time! I also fear if they’re required to get vaccine, if their seizure activity would worsen since both their epilepsy disorders affect motor skills part of brain! The elite class just doesn’t give a hoot about people! All about power & control over mankind!
My heart breaks for you menagerie. There are many children who will not be able to “catch up” and their lives will forever be altered. As grandparents, we are more powerless than the parents. Prayers for you and your family.
Much appreciated!
There are no words for this surreal world we find ourselves in. I don’t even recognize those who were once close to me and I feel like I am in some perpetual mourning state of mind. God help us.
I feel the same as you do Old School! I don’t understand my family members (just one) and her family attitude! I am in a daze. so sad. three months later I still cry to GOD.
Very foreign for those of us who value our relationships with family and friends. I think it’s an oppurtunity to draw closer to God. Be well coda, you aren’t alone.

A 34 year old man was found dead yesterday in the back of a local Shop’n’Save by a store clerk. Police were immediately called to the scene along with a medical examiner. Initial reports are that there was no evidence of foul play. The police released a statement earlier that the man’s death was ruled as the result of apparent asphyxiation. He was wearing three masks at the time his body was discovered. Testing by the medical examiner’s office revealed that he did not have covid-19 virus.
The state board of health has just announced that they are very happy that the use of multiple masks prevented the man from catching covid-19, and that they recommend everyone to triple up on mask wearing to ensure this trend continues.

I swear—by my life and my love of it—that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.”
It’s an interesting point for discussion, Feisty, because many people have, over the centuries, lived their lives for the sake of others. Parents, for example, like the father or mother who work a lousy job just to put food on the table for their children. Or the soldier who goes to war on behalf of his fellow citizens, etc, etc. We can all think of examples of this.
However, it’s the second part of the quote, “nor ask another man to live for the sake of mine” that grabs me. Nothing illustrates that more perfectly than a post I read recently on a local site, where a fellow was complaining about people who wouldn’t wear masks at the gym that he goes to. He literally said, in his post “Screw their freedoms”. He could have just not gone to the gym if he was afraid of getting COVID, but he said that he wasn’t going to be deprived of something he enjoyed doing.
This is the type of person who thinks others should live their lives because “ME”. It was one of the most insane posts I’d ever read. I wonder that his head didn’t explode from cognitive dissonance. The guy got tested THREE TIMES until he FINALLY got a Covid diagnosis. That was his finest moment, because he treated the readers of his post to the horrible ordeal he went through, a blow by blow description, all the while blaming “those guys at the gym” who refused to wear masks.
What a loser. The mark of a true loser is someone who thinks others should live their lives for himself and blames others for his condition.

(Asking for a friend still using a rotary phone.)
I’m sure there is, but I honestly don’t know how to do it. I’m a bit of a technoklutz. I thought I died and went to heaven the day I learned how to post WordPress smilies. 😀
But now, Sepp, you made me laugh with that comment about the rotary phone. As penance, you must watch this video again:

Too Stressed to Be Blessed?
By Pastor Ricky Kurth
It stopped me dead in my tracks.
At the height of the pandemic my wife was watching the news, and as I passed through the room, I heard some expert being interviewed about the coronavirus. She said, “If you’re not stressed by all of this, there’s something wrong with you!” Her words stopped me cold, for I remember thinking, “No, if you’re not stressed by all this, there’s something right with you!”
You see, the apostle Paul says we should “rejoice in the Lord alway” and “be careful” (or full of care) “for nothing,” but rather pray about “every thing” (Phil. 4:4-6). If you can do that, he promises that “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (v. 7).
The reason we can always rejoice in Christ is that “God… hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places—in Christ” (Eph. 1:3), and those immutable blessings cannot be altered by circumstances. They stand impervious in the face of any and all of the unsettling things that can happen in our lives. That’s what enabled Paul to offer us “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding.”
The trick to experiencing that peace, however, is found in remembering how blessed we are. That’s why Paul reminds us of our blessings by opening all his letters with the words “grace” and “peace.” If you can keep all that God has done for you by His grace in mind, you can have the peace that He designed His grace to give you. And that’s why Paul’s words to the Philippians always make me think of the interdispensational principle set forth in Isaiah 26:3, where the prophet prayed,
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.”
If you’d like to enjoy the “perfect” peace that the prophet mentions here, you have to learn to keep your mind “stayed” on the God of whom Isaiah went on to say,
“Lord, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for Thou also hast wrought all our works in us” (v. 12).
God has ordained “all our works” in us too. But the only way we can experience the perfect peace that God’s Word can empower us to have is to be “stayed” on Him—as stayed as the mighty oceans are “stayed” from overwhelming our shores by the power of God’s Word (Job 38:8-11). If your mind is as stayed on the Word of God as the seven seas are, God can keep turmoil and unrest from encroaching on your peace as effectively as He keeps the oceans from encroaching on the continents.
You see, His grace has given us “peace with God” (Rom. 5:1), so that’s our standing with Him. And “when He giveth quietness, who then can make trouble?” (Job 34:29). If you can learn to “stand” in the unassailable tranquility that “grace” like that gives us (Rom. 5:2), you can experience “the peace of God” that Paul says is available to us all in Philippians 4:5-7.
Of course, only believers can enjoy peace like this. The peace of unbelievers is always dependent on their circumstances. If their circumstances are calm, they have peace. If their circumstances are in turmoil, either personally or in the world about them, they know nothing but unrest. No wonder the Lord told His disciples,
“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, and neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27).
That’s why Paul told the Colossians to “let the peace of God rule in your hearts” (Col. 3:15). God’s peace is never daunted by His circumstances, even though the current circumstances of the world He created are sure to vex His holiness in ways that we can’t even begin to fathom. If you let that kind of peace rule your heart as it does His, then pandemics will roll off of you like water off a duck’s back, along with any other challenge to faith that the world, the flesh, or the devil can conjure up.
So “acquaint now thyself with Him, and be at peace” and “thereby good shall come unto thee” (Job 22:21). In times like we just endured with the Covid-19 virus, even many believers felt too stressed to be blessed. But in reality, we are “too blessed to be stressed,” as a popular Christian saying has expressed so well. “The Lord of Peace Himself” is willing to “give you peace always by all means” (2 Thes. 3:16), but you have to be willing to always “rejoice” in your blessings to maintain that peace.
So in times of turmoil, remember to keep God’s reassuring words in mind: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psa. 46:10). That’s the very definition of being “careful” or full of care “for nothing.” It is the exact nature of being spiritually minded, and “to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Rom. 8:6).
In short: if you’re not stressed in times of turmoil, there’s something right with you, not wrong!

Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.
5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 1:3 ¶ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
Isaiah 26:12 ¶ LORD, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us.
Job 38:8 Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?
9 When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
10 And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,
11 And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Job 34:29 When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
Romans 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Job 22:21 ¶ Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
2 Thessalonians 3:16 ¶ Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.
Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
if you’re not stressed in times of turmoil, there’s something right with you,
Now there’s a slogan that is true. I’m going to remember this, and try to live it.
This is so true! Despair is defeated when we align our hearts and minds with God’s. Peace is a product of embracing a Godly perspective. It’s Biblical!
Part III
Training, Range, and the Battle of the Atlantic.
1. Training of the P-38 pilot
For some time the training for flying the P-38 was inadequate and it led to a considerable number of fatalities as those climbing in the aircraft simply were not prepared to fly such an advanced fighter aircraft. Many especially lacked the training in the emergency procedures to handle engine failure and other emergencies. They even lacked adequate training in other procedures that would become routine later on like fuel transfer. Later, in the early days of their deployment pilots sometimes bailed out of the aircraft or crash landed when they thought they were out of fuel but actually had plenty left in the reserve tank and failed to know that and switch to that tank.
The reader understanding this will make the following descriptions of what transpired in N. Africa and Europe better. And what made the success of the pilots that had to fly the northern route over the Arctic to get to the Europe remarkable. And also make one understand one reason why pilot and aircraft losses in the combat debut of the type in N. Africa were in the beginning so high.
I will quote Arthur W. Heiden. He was a P-38 pilot with a lot of time in combat and then in training new pilots that would fly the P-38 and wrote this in the late 1960’s.
Like so many who were involved with this airplane I have particular impressions, memories, and very strong opinions……….
the quality of multi-engine training during WW II bordered on ridiculous. I am convinced that with the training methods now in use we could take most of today’s private pilots who might be about to fly the Aztec or Cessna 319, and in ten hours have a more confident pilot than the ones who flew off to war in the P-38.
The way the Army training was set up at the time for new pilots that had gone through all the basics up through the AT-6 Texan where pilots got their final cross country navigation, night flying, aerobatics, and gunnery training before being awarded their wings. Upon graduation those showing the most proficiency and having the highest standing could opt for training as a fighter pilot while the majority of the class were assigned according to the needs of the service, which almost always meant multi-engine training where the vast majority eventually ended up as transport or bomber pilots.
The would be fighter pilot that was slated to fly the P-38 went to twin engine advanced training that was give in the docile and rather primitive Curtis AT-9 just as those that would be going on to bombers or transports. After that he would be get some time in the RP-322, a British export version of the P-38 that had been retained for US service after it entered the war. The RP-322 was unofficially known as the “castrated Lightning” because it lacked superchargers and different aircraft had different equipment in them. (BTW the name Lightning was first given to the P-38 by the British, just as they were the ones the christened the Merlin Powered P-51 with the name Mustang).
After about 20 hours in the RP-322 the pilot was sent to either a Replacement Training Unit or an Operational Training Unit. There, if he was lucky, he got about 100 hours of combat training in the P-38. Lots of men died in accidents in these units.
For pilots already qualified in single engine fighters that were being assigned to P-38 units, training was much less formal. He would get a hop or two in a transport or other two engine aircraft with a qualified pilot. Then after reading the tech order and going through the cockpit memorization drill where the pilot is blind folded and upon the naming of a switch or control must be able to locate it he climbed into an operational P-38. Lots of qualified pilots died this way also.
The steady attrition for both types of pilots would continue as their operational P-38 unit was assembled and trained up for deployment.
All in all neither type of pilot was adequately prepared for safely flying a P-38 when there were mechanical problems and especially in the case of the loss of an engine on take off or landing the airplane on one engine. And training losses from those sources were added on top of the normally already high operational losses in fighter squadrons training up for deployment.
2. Range
This is as good as place as any to describe the exceptional range capability of the P-38 throughout it’s history.
Believe it or not, after the attack on Pearl Harbor there were a considerable number of US politicians that thought the US should just copy the British Spitfire and make it the nations primary fighter. Such misguided but strongly held opinions were of course based on the glowing accounts of the Spitfire during the Battle of Britain.
The Spitfire was an excellent tactical design but no mark in any of it’s long years of service, even after the war, approached having the range of the the great US fighters of WW II. Imagine if such hairbrained short sighted opinions had been actually implemented. The P-47, P-51, F4U, and F6F along with the P-38 would have not been around to take the fight deep into enemy territory, provide escorts for the bombers on their longer range missions, or be able to effectively escort Naval bombers when they attacked Japanese carriers and other fleet units.
In 1943 the pilots and mechanics in the SW Pacific theater were constantly striving to increase the range far beyond the specifications stated for the particular P-38 model they were flying. Necessity if the mother of invention. Remember that when I provide the times and distances that this includes the fuel used for preflight runup, take off, joining up in formation, at least 30 minutes of combat using full power, and another 30 minute reserve in the event of mechanical, or weather, or other problems, and of course landing.
The mechanics fitted the Lightnings with one 310 gallon drop tank and one 145 gallon drop tank allowing the P-38 G and H models they were flying a combat range 1,600 miles. During these bomber escort missions he fighters often engaged superior numbers of Japanese fighters when defending the bombers. And that was just the beginning! Not many days later in another escort mission the Lightnings flew 1,900 miles and were in the air for 12 hours. This far exceeded the ranges that the units in Europe were getting out of the same model Lightnings at the time and the powers that be in the 8th Air Force simply did not believe the reports coming out of the SW Pacific theater about the P-38s obtaining such long ranges.
Those ultra long range missions happened BEFORE Charles Lindbergh visited and demonstrated his range extending cruise control techniques for minimizing fuel consumption when the P-38 was properly set up for long range cruise. With Lindbergh’s techniques the range of the P-38s were extended even more there by providing more of a safety cushion for the pilots.
And then came the J and finally the L models of the P-38s. The ultimate versions, of the fighter with all the problems that had come before resolved and a range from the factory of 2,300 miles because of considerably increased internal fuel capacity in the wings. Such long ranges resulting in 14 and more hours in the air were now reaching beyond the endurance of the combat pilots. The reason why the Air Force after WII developed the unusual F-82 Twin Mustang fighter that had two pilots to try and solve that problem.
3. The Battle of the Atlantic and the Lightning.
In his memoirs after the war Winston Churchill said that of all the battles that Britain fought, it was the Battle of the Atlantic which worried him the most. That from the man that had guided his country through the Battle of Britain as it stood alone before the threat of invasion by the Hitler’s so far undefeated forces. I think that kind of says it all about what was at stake in the battle against Karl Donitz’s U-boats, German fleet surface units, and of course the threat from the air. What was at stake was the ability of the Britain to continue to make war.
The essence of the Battle of the Atlantic can be summed up in two words: Tonnage war! In reality though German surface units did contribute the threat to the shipping of the UK and later allies came from the U-boats assisted from the air. Admiral Karl Donitz strove to sink so much shipping with his U-boats that they would overwhelm the allies ability to keep Britain and Russia supplied with the vital materials of war being shipped by sea. During the darkest year of 1942 before the massive ship building programs of the US began to bear much fruit and the techniques of defending the convoys were still striving to reach a level of effectiveness, that only would be obtained by the advent of increased effectiveness of sonar and airborne radar, the use of escort carriers, and enough escorts to provide Hunter killer groups that were not tied to escorting a convoy and could pursue the U-boats until they were sunk; Until then the very capable German Admiral came closer to his goal than at any time before or afterward. It was not until May of 1943 that the allies had enough of the assets described that they gained the upper hand over the U-boat menace and from that point on the number of sinkings by U-boats declined precipitously while the U-boats more often became the hunted instead of the hunter. By the end of WW II the German U-boat crews had suffered a higher percentage of KIA then any other segment of any German military service.
But the U-boat scourge was the was the worst in 1942 before the turning of the tide and a total of 1,332 Allied ships were sunk that year which was about twice as many as any other year during the war. And it was in that year that the US had to find a way to get into the war against forces of Hitler and Mussolini as per the order of FDR to his commanders.
And so despite the shortage of shipping, further strained by essential operations in the Pacific Theater, it was decided that the US forces would first enter the war by an invasion of the NW coast of Africa to be carried out November 8, 1942. Army Chief of Staff Marshal, Allied commander of the invasion Eisenhower, and Chief of the US Army Air Force Hap Arnold all agreed that if Torch was to be carried out it was essential that as many P-38 fighters as possible be sent to support the ground forces. Marshal in fact flatly stated that without the P-38s the invasion could not be expected to be successful in it’s objectives. General Arnold said “If the P-38s were withdrawn, then the African invasion must be abandoned altogether.” (The US Army Air Corp was eliminated 20 June, 1841 and became the US Army Air Force on that date).
Those generals were prompted to make such strong statements about their need because every general and some Admirals in every theater, but especially the Pacific theaters, were clamoring for the maximum number of P-38s they could get their hands on. Obviously, despite it’s problems, the P-38 was looked upon as the best US fighter available at this time in the war by every major US command in every theater of war.
At the time that the fighters were being staged for Torch the F and G models of the P-38 were in front line service and the H model would follow in 1943.
The F model was considered the first truly combat capable model. The F model was the first to be outfitted with underwing racks for carrying drop tanks or bombs. Each of the two racks having a capacity of 1,000 lb. Later would be added the H model which would serve in the N. Africa theater in greater numbers than earlier Fs and Gs. Some versions of the F model came with the 8 degree combat setting for the Fowler Flaps. All of the Gs had that feature. Also initially 20 of the F models were converted to the F-4A photographic reconnaissance version for service in N. Africa
The G model having more powerful engines than the F and several other improvements including better superchargers. The G model had the shackles to carry an external load of 3, 600 lb and so could carry two 300 gallon drop tanks. In practice in combat however the G model often carried a total bomb load of 4,000 lb on ground attack or bombing missions. The practice of exceeding factory load specs was common for several different aircraft types during the war.
The H model had a ferry range of 2,200 miles. Though the service ceiling of the H model was listed at 40,000 ft., in fact an H model with no special modifications set an official American altitude record of 44,940 ft. The H model that would come into service in May of 1943 had still more powerful engines than the Gs and further improved superchargers, and was the first model to have automatic engine controls. It also had a greatly improved cooling system which was much needed because all of the earlier models were still suffering from overheating under certain conditions. The H model also had a new 20 mm cannon that had 150 rounds capacity and was an improvement over the previous model used.
So the above are the models that served during the heavy battles in the N. African and Mediterranean theater in 1942 and 43. Now on to the question of how they got over into the battle. Most of the bombers and transports heading over flew via a northern route over the Arctic. But what about the fighters? The P-38 was the only fighter available at that time that had the range to ferry over the Atlantic.
And so the decision was made to try and fly the P-38 via the Northern route to the British isles and then eventually to N. Africa. It is an indication of just how desperate the situation had become that the Air Force decided that a loss of up to 10% of the big fighters would be acceptable. This loss limit was in aircraft because it was judged that loss of the pilots would not be that high because of the route would have good rescue units stationed along it’s length.
Of course the navigation aids of the day were quite primitive and the weather in the Arctic is some of the most variable and stormy on the planet. It is not unusual for a blizzard to pop up out of nowhere in July! Headwinds nearing 200 mph were sometimes encountered and icing conditions were the norm in the storms The P-38 pilots lacked the training for long distance navigation over water and lacked the radios for long range communication and so it was decided that they would fly with a B-17 mothership which had both. To make matter more dicey the Germans were masters at broadcasting dummy radio direction finding and did so from their ships.
The route the fighters would take started from Presque Isle, in Maine, then to the airbase at Goose Bay in Labrador, And then began the really dangerous legs. From Goose Bay they would proceed to one of two airfields in Greenland, and then from there to Reykjavik, Iceland and then finally to Prestwick in Scotland.
The leg from Goose Bay to Greenland was the most dangerous because it passed through a 1,000 miles of an area known for some of the worst weather on earth, and the weather often encountered along leg from Greenland to Iceland wasn’t much better plus had the added danger of the false radio direction broadcast from the Germans that could and did send some pilots wondering around the open ocean.
As the program was being prepared with special training for the pilots, and mechanics were giving special attention to the aircraft that would make the trip, things became desperate in the Pacific as US intel discerned that the Japanese were going to make a major move to invade some US base or bases in the Pacific and where exactly the blow or blows would fall had not yet been determined. So suddenly all available P-38s were being rushed to the west coast. And thus the uncertainties of Japanese intentions leading up to The Battle of Midway delayed the start of the attempts of ferry flights of the P-38s to Europe.
In the mean time a flight of 18 B-17 bombers flying from Goose Bay to Greenland ran into horrendous weather over Greenland and had communications difficulties. Fifteen of the bombers managed to find the base and land but three were lost though all crew members were rescued. This disaster created some serious unease about the chances of the P-38s making the journey but it was decided to continue the program.
By June 23 they started sending the formations of P-38s led by at least one B-17 mothership on the Northern route, By July 15 several of these formations were strung out along the route at various stops but on that day the weather closed in and the German fake radio directional broadcasts started taking their toll. Six P-38s and two B-17s belly landed on the glaciers along the east coast of Greenland but all crew got down with no more than some minor injuries and were promptly rescued.
The ferry missions continued but attrition of the aircraft was turning out to be much less than 10% and by the end of the 1942 flying season (the North Atlantic route was close during the three worst months of the winter) a total of 882 aircraft of all types successfully completed the long journey out of 920 that had attempted it for a loss rate for the aircraft of only 5.2%. Only 9 aircraft crews were lost, the rest having been rescued. As for the P-38s? 179 out of 186 aircraft made it with the loss of only one pilot! Quite a performance and far better than the best results expected.
Then early in 1943 the need for P-38s in N. Africa became so desperate that 50 of the fighters were flown via the southern route directly to the combat zone.
The AAF was so pleased with the results plans were made to ferry as many as P-38s across the Atlantic. However as I stated before, in what became referred to by the surviving U-boat commanders as “Black May” the back of Donitz’s U-boat campaign was broken and would never again be serous threat to the logistics links across the Atlantic. Since it was much more expensive and now more risky to ferry the aircraft and the massive Liberty Ship program was far exceeding the number of launchings FDR had initially set as a goal, there was no need to ferry. To increase the number of fighters being delivered to England and the N. African and Mediterranean and to speed up assembly once they arrived a system was devised by which partially disassembled fighters were shipped on special racks on the decks of tankers. So though the bomber and transport aircraft ferry operations along both the Northern and Southern routes for the duration of the war there was no need to ferry anymore fighters and the practice ended.
Today there is a flying legacy of that time when P-38s were so needed that they had to be ferried across an area with some of the coldest and stormiest weather on earth. It is Glacier Girl a P-38F model that along with several other P-38s and a B-17 belly landed on a glacier in Greenland and 67 years later having been recovered from deep under that glacial ice was restored and is flying. Here is the story for those interested including some great pictures.

“There’s a moon out tonight….”
I had to be tested twice at a mobile site. Once before each surgery. I was also tested once during my stay in the hospital. Pull up masked with the exact type mask they required.. They identify you. Then you pull the mask down below your nose and it’s over in a few seconds. Taking the nasal swab really wasn’t that bad. The PPE the testers were wearing included full face shields that sealed under their chins.
The testers were protected better than those on the OR team that I saw before being put under anesthesia which were only wearing masks while I had none. Neither time did I see my urologist that was doing the surgery. .
Who would have ever thought it would come to that in our country?
BTW, how did your recheck appointment go? Did you get that catheter removed?
Yes! I am free! Thanks for asking. \
As of Monday, for the first time in months, I have no tubes sticking out of my body. I have no cath bag to drag around. When they remove the superpubic cath they don’t stitch up the hole but leave it open and gave me antibiotics to use. On occasion some urine may leak. But now the hole is healed shut though I am still cleaning it everyday and putting a dressing on it until I finish the last of the antibiotics. I only have three days more of them,
I am still having some problems with incontinence. Especially when I wake up from sleep and my bladder is quite full. But gradually it is getting better,
I am no longer taking hydrocodone. I am still taking flowmax,
Monday after next I will be returning for an ultrasound of my kidneys which is just a normal precaution for a patient that has gone through what I have. If it comes out good I will be able to go back to work when I am up to it.
I have work to do on myself though. I am a bag of bones with ribs sticking out and sticks for arms and legs. So I need exercise but must work into it gradually to be sure I don’t hurt myself.

IS YOUR IMAGINATION OF GOD STARVED?
“Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things.” Isaiah xl. 26
The people of God in Isaiah’s day had starved their imagination by looking in the face of idols, and Isaiah made them look up at the heavens, that is, he made them begin to use their imagination aright. Nature to a saint is sacramental. If we are children of God, we have a tremendous treasure in Nature. In every wind that blows, in every night and day of the year, in every sign of the sky, in every blossoming and in every withering of the earth, there is a real coming of God to us if we will simply use our starved imagination to realize it.
The test of spiritual concentration is bringing the imagination into captivity. Is your imagination looking on the face of an idol? Is the idol yourself? Your work? Your conception of what a worker should be? Your experience of salvation and sanctification? Then your imagination of God is starved, and when you are up against difficulties you have no power, you can only endure in darkness. If your imagination is starved, do not look back to your own experience; it is God Whom you need. Go right out of yourself, away from the face of your idols, away from everything that has been starving your imagination. Rouse yourself, take the gibe that Isaiah gave the people, and deliberately turn your imagination to God.
One of the reasons of stultification in prayer is that there is no imagination, no power of putting ourselves deliberately before God. We have to learn how to be broken bread and poured out wine on the line of intercession more than on the line of personal contact. Imagination is the power God gives a saint to posit himself out of himself into relationships he never was in.

Scenes Beyond the Grave – Marietta Davis
Chapter VII – Artistic Order of Infant Paradise
7:2
“Whenever an infant dies on earth, the angel guardian who bears up the spirit to the Land of Peace, perceives its interior type of mind, and according to its type it is classed with others of like order of intelligence; and as the skillful gardener on earth in one floral division trains the various species of the lily, and in another compartment roses, and in another the camellias or the honeysuckles; so here angelic wisdom classifies the infant spirits, and according to their variety of artistic, scientific, and social tendencies, assigneth each a home best adapted to the unfolding of its interior germs of life, into intellectual, artistic or industrial harmony.”
“Over each edifice presides seven guardian angels, who collectively form one octave of instruction, each angel being of that type of mind which agrees with his associates, as one note harmonizes with the associate tones and semi-tones of the harmonic scale.”
“Each of these seven guardians is the superior of a subordinate octave of more youthful spirits, who perform duties assigned to them, according to their type of being, in the harmonic system of paradisical instruction; and each of these presided over a separate class of infant beings.”
“Seven of these edifices compose one greater family, and each separate palace of instruction, which is embosomed in its own separate gardens and enclosures, is one of seven of associate variety, and of like degree; and seven of these in their turn form the subordinate divisions of one more composite and magnificent palatial temple, whose centre pavilion is adapted to instruction in more exalted degrees of paradisical truth.”
“The centre palace of each ward is thus a magnificent temple of instruction, encircled in artistic splendors and floral harmonies, corresponding to its degree, and this is surrounded by seven lesser pavillions of architectural beauty, encircled by corresponding adornments adapted to their subordinate but exalted conditions; and each of these last is also the centre of a lesser octave of edifices, also adorned with stately forms of blooming and sculptured perfection. In these last the infants dwell, and are led forth each day, or each successive period corresponding thereto, to the superior palaces, and to the centre pavilion, for the education of their unfolding natures.”
“As soon as these infants arise to a degree suitable for the general assembly in the great and centre dome, or temple of instruction, they are led first from their several homes to their separate centre school, and then all emerge from the different wards and move beneath a cloud of angel choralists, who chant loud alleluias to their Prince and Savior, and with whose harmony the infants move toward the outer temple.”
To be continued…
Beyond anything I could have ever imagined. Lives ended in this world, begin in His world.
I replied to you yesterday, but it never posted. Your posts have had an impact on my spiritual relationship with our Lord. I cannot adequately express my gratitude.
It did post yesterday and I answered it ? I gave you a heads up that the next chapter(s) will be specifically about how Heaven heals and nurtures the aborted babies…it’ll make you cry…
I replied to your reply! That was the one that didn’t post. As you said, this one was heart stopping and yet I found it comforting. All my life God has shown me His angels. Your posts have taken it beyond . . .
Thank you

I have eaten several times at a Horn & Hardart Automat in NYC in the late 1950s. My family also once had lunch at an H&H Automat in Philadelphia.
For elementary school-aged kids, they were great. You only needed a few nickels dimes and quarters and your parents didn’t need to accompany you. The hot ceramic ramekins full of toasted mac n cheese were my all-time favorite. Hot dogs and beans were another fav. Apple or lemon meringue pie were the best desserts for me. They had a self-serve milk dispenser so refills were easy…

It would be a fantastic idea for the covid-fearing crowd, albeit social distancing would require a large amount of floorspace. Instead of table servers they would need a sizable table and surface disinfecting crew.
Thanks for the blast from the past, GB! I ate at Horn & Hardart in Manhattan a couple of times myself, I think in the early 60s. My parents took me and my siblings. I was fascinated by it. Very Jetsons for its time, but actually quite a simple concept.
“Very Jetsons for its time...”
? ?
Yes, although I never thought about it in those terms since the Jetsons had not yet been created.
Indeed. I didn’t get to go until after the Jetsons had been created, so you were a pioneer! For those not familiar with the Jetsons:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jetsons
“the Jetsons live in a comical version of a century in the future,[3][4] with elaborate robotic contraptions, aliens, holograms, and whimsical inventions.”
Whimsical inventions, huh? One of my favorite episodes was one that included a scene where Jane Jetson got a morning video phone call from a friend and had to scramble to put on something called a “Morning Mask” to hide the hair curlers and lack of makeup. It molded to her face. So she’s talking to her friend who apparently was also wearing a “Morning Mask”, but her friend’s mask was defective and all of a sudden curled away from her face, revealing a disheveled woman in curlers, etc. The woman was completely humiliated and hung up.
Little did we know at the time that we’d one day get Skype and Zoom, etc., where lawyers can appear in video conferences as fluffy talking cats and do nasty stuff “accidentally on purpose” a la Jeffrey Toobin (a truly ghastly excuse for a human being, ugh.
Kudos to you, jay 1776. That was awesome!

Usually it is also really cold when a conifer breaks under a snow load. Even in ice storms they do well and their bowes ;just fold down like an umbrella closing. Add in a heavy wind though and it’s a different story.

Saint Ephraim of Syria (+ 373) was especially the apostle of repentance. Even today his writings soften many hearts, strengthen them against sin, and turn them back to Christ.
Saint Isaac of Syria (+ 7th century) was chosen as Bishop of Nineveh, but fled to a desert monastery. His 100 sermons on the spiritual life have come down to us. He was without equal as a writer and guide in the spiritual life.
Saints Ephraim and Isaac of Syria are among the Saints commemorated today.

Been snowing a little every day this week here in my piece of Central Indiana. Today we have had a steady light snow all day so far and though it is light it is accumulating. Yesterday and today both dreary. Current Temp at 16:00 is 17 deg. F. which is a bit higher than it has been since Monday. Been getting down to the single digits at night.
Will we ever get to a point where we develop our NEW LIST of priorities for conservatives moving forward. What would be the top 5? What order/ranking?
Would any of these make the list?

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and his family as they seek to lead America back to You. Also, we pray for Angels to protect and support our Sundance as he works for justice and peace.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
