The Unknown Hymn

“And when they had sung an hymn, they went out…” (Matt.26:30).
Often have we wondered what might have been the words of that sacred hymn, but God has seen fit to keep this from us for the present.
We have in our Bibles many great poetic expressions: the Song of Moses, the beautiful Magnificat, all the Psalms and many other poems, but the hymn that our Lord and His eleven apostles sang that night before leaving the Upper Room was evidently a well-known song, in which they could all join. We can almost imagine our Lord saying, “Before we leave, let’s sing…”.
We will not know the words of that hallowed hymn until we reach heaven, but we do know this: Our Lord and His apostles did not leave the Upper Room weeping and mourning. Though His soul had been deeply troubled as He approached the dreadful hour of His suffering and death, He could say: “What shall I say? Father save Me from this hour? But for this cause came I unto this hour” (John 12:27). Though deeply saddened by Judas’ base betrayal, “having loved His own…He loved them unto the end” (John 13:1), and His words of comfort and cheer during these last hours are now crowned with the singing of a hymn–a hymn, a song of praise.
Though the words of that hymn are as yet unknown to us, the lesson of its singing should not be lost. If the Upper Room scene closed with the singing of a hymn, surely we may be given the grace to sing God’s praise in the midst of our lesser trials. And if our Lord, “for the joy that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising the shame” (Heb.12:2), surely our burdens may — and should — be lightened through the knowledge that by His grace, “our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (II Cor. 4:17).

Happy Cursday, Treepers. I had an entirely different video choice for tonight. But then I came across this especially poignant video which shows the tragedy of dog abuse and the redemption that patience and love can accomplish. Pit-Bulls are probably the most systematically abused dogs in America. Street culture sees them as potent status symbols and weapons. These smart, loving dogs are taught to be aggressive. And because they so deeply love and trust their humans, they become guided missiles, just waiting to be unleashed. Because of this many are euthanized by municipal dog pounds. But sometimes they can be saved. This is a story of determination, love and ultimate redemption. This guy saved a dog. Good for him!
Jesus Saves. I hope someone who is conflicted about belief in God can derive some clarity from this video. I immediately identified with this guy’s experience. I’ve never had anything like what happened to him, but I have had our Lord speak to me. For as long as I can remember, our Lord has always been in my life. Usually it’s been at a distance, but there’s always been a presence. I’ve tried to explain to people how they just have to learn to listen, but I don’t think I’ve been all that successful.
Out Lord has spoken to me directly on three occasions. I felt his presence in ways that are not easily explained or described. But, trust me, He was just there. The first was when my father died. I’ve been a strong believer, talking to Jesus when I need to, perhaps not often enough . . . But when my dad died, I just knew in a way that was both profound, transcendental, and so intensely personal. I just knew. Another time, my wife was very ill, I was alone and very frightened. Again, I just felt his presence and knew absolutely that He was with me. A third time, I was warned about an impending heart attack. It was a clear warning that something was going to happen. Again I just knew.
Because our Lord has been with me for so long, I’ve just never questioned His presence. I know he’s always there. I know when I call on hm he’s always listening. I just wish I could communicate more effectively to others abut this. I hope this video will help some of us out there. This guys speaks the truth. Jesus Saves. Honest, he does.

The Dam Buster Raid and 617 squadron PART II
For ever after their Raid the Squadron would informally be known as “The Dam Busters”.
The survivors of the Dams raid were retained and X squadron received it’s formal designation of 617 squadron. Their numbers reinforced to bring the squadron up to full strength by volunteer crews having excellent records that had completed at least one tour in regular squadrons that desired to “stay on Ops” instead of taking the mandatory rest in training new crews or other duties. The normally stiff and formal “Brass Hat” “Bomber Harris” had a soft spot for what he referred to as his “Old Lags” that fought to stay on operations after their tour was up and they were due a rest and 617 gave him an opportunity to fulfil their desires.
For a considerable amount of time after the Dams raid the 617 squadron had no missions other than training. It was such a long period that other squadrons began to chide them by referring to them as “the one ops squadron”. This period was of course frustrating for the squadron members. It resulted in some crews asking for transfer.
This extended period of no ops was a result of those in Bomber command working out what would be the roll of this new special ultra experienced squadron and how to best utilize them. It was a tug of war between various commands within Bomber Command.
In the mean time Barnes Wallace had not been idle. He has been working on a concept and design for super block buster bombs that were to penetrate deep into the earth and blast a significant sized void underground. The idea was to have a weapon that could undermine the foundations of heavy steel reinforced concrete structures which in Hitler’s Europe abounded. It was beyond the capability of any allied bomb types to significantly damage such structures, like U-boat pens, and later special “V” weapons production and launching facilities. The bombs available could not penetrate the thick steel reinforced concrete of such installations and so they had been immune to significant damage.
Wallace was working on two versions of his “earth quake” bombs. The first to be a 12,000 lb. version named “Tall Boy”. The second one to be 22,000 lb. that he named the “Grand Slam”. At the time of it’s concept and design there was no aircraft in the allied arsenal that could carry the “Grand Slam”. However Wallace had been keeping in touch with the engineers at Avro that were continually improving their Lancaster bomber and was convinced that the type would eventually be developed to the point it could carry the 22,000 monster. And so it was. Eventually a Lancaster version was specially developed with the most powerful engines available to carry the Grand Slam. And the US eventually started producing these bombs and the B-29 could carry them if so desired.

Once again Wallace had to beat his way through the inevitable resistance to making his vision a reality. There were few facilities with the capability to produce the hardened nose cones of such monsterous proportions and they were all already very busy with other vital work. But finally the decision was made to produce the Tall Boy.
This decision was driven in part by the desire to do real damage to the U-boat pens and partly by the knowledge that Hitler was well on the way to bringing several of his secret “V” weapons to fruition. (The Tall Boy went into service on June 8th 1944 and the first V-1 “Buzz Bomb” landed on England the less than a week later.)
It was also realized that such a bomb could do great damage that would take months to repair to rail road tunnels, marshalling yards, and heavy bridges, there by being a great asset to furthering the “transportation plan” that was a part of Allied strategy for destroying the ability of the Germans to concentrate their forces against the D-day invasion forces.
Obviously such expensive bombs would have to dropped with great accuracy. Wallace’s bombs were manufactured to strict tolerances with fins canted at a 5 degree angle so the bomb would spin making it extremely stable. And just as obviously the crews that would drop it would have to have special equipment and be specially trained to achieve the super accuracy required to place the bombs where they could be effective. These bombs had to be dropped from high altitude to be effective so as to achieve the speed necessary during the drop for maximum penetration into ground.
And so, after several other special missions, including the precise flying required for dropping of window in a pattern that would make it appear as if an invasion fleet was headed for Calais as a diversion for D-day, 617 squadron was tasked and trained extensively to once again to bring Wallace’s hard work to fruition in battle.
The Tall Boy bombs were quickly proven to be highly effective in their intended purpose and in fact surpassed even the expectations of Wallace and so it turned out that the manufacture of the larger Grand Slam was began relatively quickly.
Contrary to what is stated in some histories, Wallace never intended the Tall Boys or Grand Slams to directly penetrate the steel reinforced concrete roofs of the U-boat pens which were up to 23 ft, thick. But in practice some actually did.
617 squadron dropping Tall Boy bombs were so effective against their intended targets that once there were enough of the bombs produced, a second squadron, #5, was trained and equipped to use them. These squadrons did massive damage to the German war machine taking out targets beyond the capabilities of any other squadrons. Besides helping to take out many of the U-boat bases and production facilities, they destroyed the menace of the Tirpitz who’s threat to allied convoys had been a thorn in the side of Allies and tied down many of the Royal Navy’s war ships for years. They took out many Germanys most advanced and secure V-weapons production facilities.

OT! Thankyou Nimrodman for your mention of a good documentary on the P-38, I will have several sources for my multipart essay on the aircraft drawn from my existing library. The long and convoluted development of the aircraft that was the most advanced in the world when the prototype was produced and pioneered features that would become common in other aircraft in the 2nd half of WW II demands more than two parts and I am inclined right now to believe it will take at least four parts to even outline it in abridged manner suitable for posting here.
I already know the primary reference will be Fork-Tailed Devil: The P-38 book by Martin Caidin (thriftbooks.com)
This prolific author was an Army Air Corp Historian during WW II and afterward and authored or co-authored some of the greatest and best selling books about the great aircraft of WW II. The book above is the best single reference I know of that addresses not only the development of the P-38 and the way it was used in combat, but also the stories of the great aces that flew it.
These stories are much tougher to tell because of the conditions under which the P-38 was deployed. In the European theater the historians and the records they produced during the war were ensconced in the relative safety and stability of Britain. But the best and by far the most of the combat history of the P-38 was recorded in the relatively primitive conditions of the N. Africa, Mediterranean, and most importantly the stinking, wet, jungles of the SW Pacific theater where Group HQs moved great distances over the course of the war and were often attacked by enemy aircraft. The combats were fought not over developed and highly populated lands an in Europe, but over some of the most vast wilderness terrain on the planet and vast areas of water.
This great difference in conditions not only made a great difference in the details recorded but also in the records that survived and the official scores of the aces pilots that flew the type. It is remarkable that the two highest scoring US Aces during the war (And several more in the top 100) got all of their kills flying the P-38 in such conditions where it is conservative to estimate that they actually downed more than twice as many enemy aircraft than their officially recorded scores account for.
Further, the pilots of the P-38n and other types in the fighter groups in those rougher and more primitive theaters were required by the heavy, sustained, and often desperate combat conditions to fly a greater variety of mission types. One day maybe flying escort for heavy or medium bombers, the next a ground attack mission, the next attacking Japanese ships, the next carrying a heavy load of bombs dropped from higher altitude. While in the European theater whole Air Forces in the Army Air Corp formed to specialize in a specific mission type.
And to make matters worse, for the most of the war the US press and thus bulk of the public were focused more on the European theater than the Pacific and much of the press in the Pacific was focused on Naval operations and the actions in the Central Pacific and not what as going on in the stinking wet jungles of the many New Guinea and the many other islands in that theater where living conditions were so much tougher.
A dear friend’s father was a P38 pilot. I used to kid him about it being the hot rod plane of WW2. I asked him about any desire to fly after the war and like so many said he never thought about it. One day he gave me a book about his squadron’s exploits over Italy. That’s when I found out he flew the camera plane. No defensive weapons.
The very first P-38s committed to combat theaters were all F-4 recon versions. The AAF realized that having to use medium and heavy bombers for recon was reducing the numbers of bombers they had for bombing missions and using the P-38 F-4 recon aircraft was thus much more efficient. The F-4 was fast, flew high, and was a very stable camera platform. Ever improving Recon versions of the P-38 were used through in all the theaters of war including the CBI (China, Burma, India Theater).

One of the stories covered in the video documentary was the North African theater. Germany’s supply chains had been cut to the point they had to fly fleets of cargo planes to resupply their forces in Africa
The P38s would intercept the cargo plane squadrons and tear them to pieces, as many as 37 downed in one action while losing only 2 or so American planes
That segment was particularly riveting
Yep. The German cargo planes would mostly be the three engine JU-57s but on occasion the rare giant six engine Me-323 would also be among them. One time a gaggle of US B-25medium bombers came across a large formation of JU-57s, attacked a shot quite a number of them down.
Whenever the Germans started having to rely on air transport to sustain an Army you knew the German Army or unit of any significant size they were trying to supply was being going to be beaten. Their air transports were simply not up to the job. The JU-57 was a relatively primitive, slow, and low capacity bird compared to the US C-47 and C-46.
The P-38s and P-40s would also catch large formations of Ju-87 Stuka dive bombers over the Med the blast a bunch of them out of the sky.
I appreciate the information rah. I recall in reading the autobiography of Col. Charles Lindbergh, he was tasked on developing techniques for extending the flying time and distance that missions could be flown in the P-38. He wasn’t active duty but flew as an advisor and taught the crews tricks and techniques to optimize tuning and leaning the engines safely and using the lift under cloud formations for example. He also worked on the development of the B-17 which was developed as an improvement on the PBY to locate an incoming enemy fleet up to 600 miles out and immediately initiate an attack.
Actually, it wasn’t just the P-38 fighter and recon groups that Lindbergh trained to use his fuel conservation techniques. He did the same for Marine Fought F4U Corsair pilots and AAF P-47 Thunderbolt pilots in the Central Pacific and SW Pacific theaters. The P-51 had not yet showed up in those theaters at that time.
The primary basis for the technique was adjusting the engines RPM, manifold pressure, and the fuel-air mixture to minimize fuel consumption. These adjustments, and especially how “lean” he had them running their air fuel mixtures were outside the recommended operation parameters from the engine manufactures but Lindbergh had tested them and it was found they did not damage the engines or reduce their service lives.
The F4U and P-47 fighters used the same radial air cooled engine. The P-38 used a liquid cooled inline engine. Lindbergh developed new operating parameters for each to maximize fuel savings. .

Paul says he is overruled, overmastered, held as in a vice, by the love of Christ. Very few of us know what it means to be held in a grip by the love of God; we are held by the constraint of our experience only. The one thing that held Paul, until there was nothing else on his horizon, was the love of God. “The love of Christ constraineth us” – when you hear that note in a man or woman, you can never mistake it. You know that the Spirit of God is getting unhindered way in that life.
When we are born again of the Spirit of God, the note of testimony is on what God has done for us, and rightly so. But the baptism of the Holy Ghost obliterates that forever, and we begin to realize what Jesus meant when He said – “Ye shall be witnesses unto Me.” Not witnesses to what Jesus can do – that is an elementary witness – but “WITNESSES UNTO ME.” We will take everything that happens as happening to Him, whether it be praise or blame, persecution or commendation. No one can stand like that for Jesus Christ who is not constrained by the majesty of His personal power. It is the only thing that matters, and the strange thing is that it is the last thing realized by the Christian worker. Paul says he is gripped by the love of God, that is why he acts as he does. Men may call him mad or sober, but he does not care; there is only one thing he is living for, and that is to persuade men of the judgment seat of God, and of the love of Christ. This abandon to the love of Christ is the one thing that bears fruit in the life, and it will always leave the impression of the holiness and of the power of God, never of our personal holiness.

Lindberg’s bio is a varied one. He was never the same person after the kidnapping death of his son. He was duped by the Nazi’s and a strict isolationist. Then when the chips were down and the US at war he devised fuel saving procedures for US fighter aircraft and went to the Pacific and taught them to US pilots in the war zone where on three occasions while flying with American fighter pilots on long range missions as an observer he shot down Japanese aircraft. Lindberg materially helped end the war quicker and saved US pilots lives with his range extending techniques.
After the war Lindbergh was a technical representative for a major US Airline.as the industry was just getting ready to convert to jet aircraft. During the period “Tex” Johnston was Boeings chief test pilot and testing the Americas first jet liner the 707.
Tex was warned before a flight to wait for a special passenger. After Tex had started the aircrafts engines the special passenger quickly came out of a hanger with his hot on an the collar of his overcoat pulled up and boarded. It was Lindbergh. Tex put him in the copilot’s seat and during the flight offered the controls to him. Lindbergh did some shallow turns and gave control back to Tex. Tex then did some more radical turns and other maneuvers to demonstrate the true capabilities of the aircraft and offered Lindbergh the controls again so he could give it a try. Lindbergh refused, saying he preferred to just observe. .
Lindbergh came for a second ride later, again preferring to be incognito and refusing the controls when offered.

A tale of making the fastest passage of a sailing ship from New York harbor to “The Golden Gate” in San Francisco via rounding cape horn. (The Golden Gate referred to the harbor long before the bridge was built. Think about it. Golden gate- Gold rush.).
This great feat was accomplished by the husband and wife team of Samuel Perkins, Master, and Eleanor Creesy, Navigator. These remarkable people seem to have been the perfect couple. Samuel was a hard master and a great sailor. Eleanor loved the details of navigating, believed in science and was thus not afraid to try new approaches and routes based on studies of currents and winds produced by the US Navy observatory to solve the problems of navigating the seas on sails by the fastest route possible even though it was not the shortest route.
. Eleanor was also the perfect foil for Samuel’s hard driving sailor mentality. She made sure that the sailors on the ship were treated better than on most ships. They had fresh meat twice a week at a time when once a week was the norm. She acted as a buffer between the Master and the passengers. And she also acted as the nurse. She was a remarkable woman who was every bit as responsible for the success of their passages as her husband.
And her husband, despite being a hard bitten sailor who had lived the hard life of the sea of the times recognized her qualities and at a time when women, and especially married women had few rights and were generally uneducated, he let Eleanor have her head and prove herself to be a navigator without equal in the one of the manliest of trades dominated by men.
The factors that made it so Flying Cloud could achieve it’s remarkable fast voyage are many. But at the top comes through several factors that ride above all others despite the fact that it seems that Flying Clouds crew was pretty much average for the time.
They start with Master Shipbuilder Donald McKay who designed and built Flying Cloud. Then there is Master Perks exceptional drive as a master who would keep sail flying when more cautious men would reef them. But what stands out above all other factors was Eleanor’s decision to navigate a new course for the voyage based on the work of Navy lieutenant and superintendent of the Naval observatory, Matthew Fontaine Maury. Maury compiled and digested massive amounts of data taken from ships logs to make an analyses of the prevailing currents and winds of the worlds oceans to suggest the fastest courses for navigation from one point to another. Some of what he developed went directly against the prevailing opinions based on the sailors lore of of the ages. Eleanor was the very first to take his analysis and apply it and so the Flying Cloud make her record time sailing courses that others had not. And so it was science, with a woman already knowledgeable in navigation and bold enough to apply this untried information on the very first sailing of a new clipper ship that the investors, including her husband, had so much tied up in, that was the deciding factor.
The book is an outstanding, detailed, and apparently very well researched account of the voyage. It is obvious the author loves his subject. Though I think this is a great read for anyone to get the best out of it you need to understand sailing terms and the salty and somewhat peculiar language of the sailing sea dog and gain an understanding of how a great square sailed ship was rigged. IOW, if you don’t know what the Top Gallant is or what the difference between tacking and wearing is, you will before you finish this book. The author does a great job of explaining these things with words and diagrams. For those that don’t know a thing about the golden age of sailing ships the explanations of the hardships these people endured will be an eye opener.
We are talking about the period of the beginning of the 1850s. A time when the gold rush was on in California and the great rush of migration west in the US begins in earnest. A time when commodities bought in other places could be sold in California at a profit of 200% or more. Profits that would pay for the expense of buying, outfitting, and putting a crew on a fast ship in one trip. Coal Fired steamers had inefficient power plants that used too much coal to transit the long distance around the Horn. So at that time the cost of a new clipper ship could be recovered with a profit in a single voyage from New York to the Golden gate. Think about the implications of that.
A time when there was no panama canal and sailing to one side of the isthmus of Panama to go across land to the other side to catch a ship was very expensive and in fact a potentially deadly journey. If malaria, yellow fever and a host of other potentially deadly diseases didn’t get the traveler they still had to contend with robbers and murderers and the very high prices for transportation and food.
Of course there were other options. One could join one of the wagon trains and take over twice as long as journey around the horn and suffer many dangers crossing “the great American desert” as they called it back then. Or one could buy passage on a ship that would sail all the way around the world going east and that would take even longer than the wagon train.
So in the 1850s the fastest way to get things from the east coast of the US to the west coast was to sail down around the tip of South America and come back up. This journey of over 13,000 miles was made even faster by the innovation of the clipper ships.
Motivated by the potential profits the great merchant houses demanded faster ships from the builders. Ships that could still navigate the rough open waters of the seas while carrying a reasonable amount of cargo but sail much faster than the traditional blunt bow merchant ships so common in the times. The answer of the ship builders were the Clippers. Three masted ships with a sharp bow and slender fine lines with masts so tall that pushed the limits of the stability of the ship and the amount of sail the ship of a given size could possibly fly. Ships which took the best Masters and navigators to successfully sail without coming to n terrible end in the cold and always stormy waters off the horn.
. Masters that would push themselves, their crews, and their ships to the very limit to make a few extra miles day after day. Many didn’t make it. And of those most were lost without a trace. Flying cloud did it in 89 days and 8 hours for a record that stood from 1854-1989. To this day the only vessels that can transit from New York Harbor to the Golden Gate under sail faster are modern racing yachts.
