Majorities Often Wrong

When St. Paul was at Ephesus his proclamation of the gospel caused such a stir that the idol makers, who were losing money, protested until “the whole city was filled with confusion.” Soon somebody started a chant: “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!” Others joined and the chorus swelled until “all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians!” (Acts 19:34), and the town clerk, referring to the religion which surrounded this pagan goddess, said confidently: “These things cannot be spoken against” (Ver .36).
But later, at Rome, the Apostle was informed, with reference to those who had accepted the truths he had been proclaiming: “As concerning this sect, we know that everywhere it is spoken against” (Acts 28:22).
We wonder which side our readers would now prefer to be on: that of the superstitious multitude or that of the minority who place their faith in the Bible.
Millions worshipped the goddess Diana from a thousand years before Christ to two centuries after, but who knows her today? Where is the evidence of all the miracles she is supposed to have wrought? Her glory is little more than a memory and the religion which revolved around her name is a thing of the past.
But the Bible, for all these centuries and more, has stood unchanged and unchangeable. It has weathered, not barely, but handsomely, all the storms of criticism and opposition, and has proved to be indeed the Word of God. Read the Bible and especially that part which is particularly meant for us today: the Epistles of Paul. Depend upon it, act upon it and don’t hesitate to stand for it, even when in the minority, for where the most vital truths are concerned, majorities have generally been wrong.

In what is believed to be his final epistle, Paul reminded Timothy of the value of abiding in things such as “the sacred writings” known by Timothy from childhood (cf. 2 Timothy 3:14-15). Near the end of his ministry, Paul affirms their “being able to make you wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus”.
It is notable that Paul then spoke of doctrine — variously translated as teaching or instruction (Gr. didaskalian, cf. Romans 15:4, Titus 2:10). Paul again pointed not to himself alone, but beyond his own words to further writings where salvation as well as instruction / doctrine and more can be found:
“Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for instruction (Gr. didaskalian), for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, having been fully equipped toward every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

A small town kid, I didn’t get much of a musical education. I didn’t hear a symphony all the way through until I played Beethoven on a campus radio station. Similarly, I didn’t know anything about jazz or blues until I heard it. There was a guy in the dorms I knew who had a great jazz collection. One of the guys he liked was Mose Allison. I didn’t know where Mose fit into the jazz world lexicon but I sure knew he was seriously cool. I mean, here’s this guy from the deepest South, Mississipi I think, who is *channeling* blue and jazz and combining them into one great sound.
As I made it to a world beyond school (AKA: Houston in the 60’s) and got to know some real musicians I learned something about being good. I learned, for instance, that all these guys doing this great music just made it look easy because they were so very, very good. Mose was one of those. (I also learned without getting too embarrassed that I’d have to work very hard to get that good.) Last night I talked a bit about being the last hanger-on when the jazz club is getting ready to close. That magical period (for me) isn’t also so magical for working musicians. Thanks for posting! One of the things that boggles my mind is this- why doesn’t BLM or any of these other groups ever CELEBRATE one of the greatest accomplishments of African Americans which is JAZZ?
I am a Jazz lover my whole life, beginning when I discovered John Coltrane back in high school. It is truly one of the glories of American musical culture.
Mose Allison! You remind me of an incident I witnessed in a NYC jazz club (The Village Gate? The Jazz Gallery?) in the 1960’s. The jazz clubs frequently booked Mose as the second act to headliner Thelonious Monk, whom I would go to see and hear as often as possible, always trying for a front table so I could watch his hands to try and figure out how he did it.
This night Monk – a very physical piano player – is pounding out his musical magic (what a genius was Monk!) with his quartet when the vibration knocks his drink off the ledge, shattering liquor and glass all over the keyboard!
Not missing a beat, continuing to comp with his left hand, Monk pulls out a huge white handkerchief from his breast pocket with his right hand and, rhythmically and creatively wipes the keyboard with it as a solo! It was brilliant.
Monk’s set ended and Mose Allison came on. While he’s singing and playing he suddenly sees red blood spotting the keys.
“WTF?!”
I’m like 5 feet away, so innocently say to him, “Monk’s drink broke.”
Mose gets up and angrily walks backstage.
I don’t know what happened next but I sure hope he didn’t try to confront Monk. It would have been lights out for poor Mose.
“your mind’s on vacation…………” Heard the words as a teenager in the late fifties and sixties. I will never forget Mose.

He was always against these things as being the root of everything alien to Himself. “A man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things that he possesseth.” If we do not recognize this, it is because we are ignoring the undercurrent of Our Lord’s teaching.
We are apt to lie back and bask in the memory of the wonderful experience we have had. If there is one standard in the New Testament revealed by the light of God and you do not come up to it, and do not feel inclined to come up to it, that is the beginning of backsliding, because it means your conscience does not answer to the truth. You can never be the same after the unveiling of a truth. That moment marks you for going on as a more true disciple of Jesus Christ or for going back as a deserter.

WELT pointed out that coca “cola leftovers in the mouth would not have this effect” and that the PCR Test is “done with nose samples anyway” according to the Dialab rapid test package insert.
“And that is where no cola really belong,” WELT sarcastically ended its report referring to the nose where beverage obviously should not be found in.
