Monday September 23rd – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

    The Nature Of Grace

To a young Christian who kept bemoaning his failures and lack of spiritual growth, and wondering how God could love him, a more mature believer responded substantially as follows:

“When I leave here and return to my home I will pick up my little baby girl and put her on my knee. Tired as I am, I will dandle her on my knee and, somehow, looking into that darling face and those pretty blue eyes, I will soon feel rested and refreshed.

“This is strange, in a way, for she does not love me. She doesn’t even know what love is.

“She doesn’t appreciate my problems and has no sympathy for me. My heart can be burdened with grief or filled with anxiety, and my mind vexed with difficult problems, but she doesn’t even know or care. She just keeps gurgling and giggling at the attention I lavish upon her.

“She doesn’t contribute one cent toward the needs of our family; indeed, she costs me a great deal of money and will for years to come. Yet I love that child more than I can say. There is no sacrifice I would not make for her; no good thing I would not gladly give her.”

Such is the grace of God toward us, His children. It does not depend upon our faithfulness to Him or our appreciation of His love to us. He loves us with an unspeakable love and keeps lavishing upon us “the riches of His grace” simply because we are His children in Christ, the Beloved One. And strangely, is it not precisely this fact that proves to be our greatest incentive to give ourselves to Him in loving service and sacrifice as we grow in grace?

    • I can’t recall which history course we had to de-bunk this for. It’s a simplified version of an old popular essay entitled “The Price They Paid”, and it’s riddled with misinformation. We students got points for every “fact” we were able to correct. Here are the ones I remember:

No signer of the Declaration died of wounds inflicted by (or related to) the Revolution. Nine died during that period, but from things like illness, accidents and old age. The only one felled by any sort of wound was Button Gwinnett, who died in a duel over a personal matter.

Five were captured, but none of them or their families were mistreated, because they were quickly traded back to the other side for ransoms, a common practice at the time.

I don’t remember the specific breakdown, but most of the seventeen who “lost everything” did so because they had bad investments, failed business ventures, lawsuits or squabbles over inheritances. It wasn’t a cost of the Revolution.

The most obvious general problem with the assertions is that it distorts the true sacrifice of ordinary citizens, who did indeed lose their lives and possessions in the Revolution.

The signers of the Declaration were elite members of Colonial society. For the most part, they did not endure physical risks similar to militiamen or non-combatants whose homes and farms were in the way of military objectives. They had the resources to keep themselves and their families out of harm’s way.

Their greatest personal jeopardy would have come if we had lost the war. Their signatures would have been used as justification to imprison them or hang them for treason. However, the richest would still have been able to buy their way out of jail, or to go into voluntary exile. France would have welcomed them as esteemed refugees.

“Behold, we go up to Jerusalem.” Luke xviii. 31

In the natural life our ambitions alter as we develop; in the Christian life the goal is given at the beginning, the beginning and the end are the same, viz., Our Lord Himself. We start with Christ and we end with Him – “until we all attain to the stature of the manhood of Christ Jesus,” not to our idea of what the Christian life should be. The aim of the missionary is to do God’s will, not to be useful, not to win the heathen; he is useful and he does win the heathen, but that is not his aim. His aim is to do the will of his Lord.

In Our Lord’s life Jerusalem was the place where He reached the climax of His Father’s will upon the Cross, and unless we go with Jesus there we will have no companionship with Him. Nothing ever discouraged Our Lord on His way to Jerusalem. He never hurried through certain villages where He was persecuted, or lingered in others where He was blessed. Neither gratitude nor ingratitude turned Our Lord one hair’s breadth away from His purpose to go up to Jerusalem.

“The disciple is not above his Master.” The same things will happen to us on our way to our Jerusalem. There will be the works of God manifested through us, people will get blessed, and one or two will show gratitude and the rest will show gross ingratitude, but nothing must deflect us from going up to our Jerusalem.

“There they crucified Him.” That is what happened when Our Lord reached Jerusalem, and that happening is the gateway to our salvation. The saints do not end in crucifixion: by the Lord’s grace they end in glory. In the meantime our watchword is – I, too, go up to Jerusalem.

There are two parts to Sanger’s efforts. One is her central story that she wanted to free women from the burden of having children that they were not really interested in having, but were pressured or forced by their husband’s insistence on having inter course.

This is an individual rights and liberty thing.

The other is population control. Saner was big into population control. This is not broadcast because it sounds so heinous to those of us living in the post-Hilter days. But the Elitists and the Progs are really bent on population control.

Sanger was helping promote research on any and every method of birth control. This required research into the human reproductive cycle. She and Planned Parenthood gathered a bunch of fertility researchers in July 1959 for the Conference on Physiological Mechanisms Concerned with Conception, West Point, NY.

Proceedings were published in an edited book, 1963, Carl G. Hartman, editor. “Mechanisms Concerned with Conception: Proceedings of a symposium prepared under the auspices of the Population Council and the Panned Parenthood Federation of America.”

      Their words, not mine.

The preface notes the focus on population control, NOT the individual choice / liberty idea. Preface says “Everywhere we now find responsible people agreeing that sharp decreases in mortality rates, with corresponding increases in rates of population growth, – both resulting from the widespread application of modern medical knowledge – are now threatening to nullify many carefully planned efforts to speed up social and economic progress in the underdeveloped areas of the world, and by so doing to help frustrate the wave of nation building which is now spreading across the globe.”

So, a bunch of Imperialists hell-bent on “nation building” wanted a pill to control fertility to help build the nations by controlling their population.

The intro states “By setting our knowledge into perspective, the conference also revealed very clearly that vast areas of the subject are still cloaked in an ignorance which prevents a rational and scientific approach to the problem of population control.”

This intro was also published in “Science,” Nov 6, 1959, pp 1260 – 1268, Solly Zuckerman.

Their own words, folks. Not my spin.

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
