Wednesday July 24th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

    Mind Your Magistrates

“Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates…” (Titus 3:1).

Who are these “principalities and powers” to whom we must be subject? Well, we know there are different kinds of principalities and powers, since in Ephesians 6:12 we are told to “wrestle” them, while here we are told to “be subject” to them! Ephesians, of course, speaks of the unseen demonic host, “the rulers of the darkness of this world,” who wrestle with us as we proclaim God’s Word. But Titus 3:1 speaks of the human rulers of this world, the “magistrates” in government to whom God says we must be subject (Rom. 13:1-7).

You wouldn’t think Christians would need to be told this, but once we learn we are already citizens of heaven (Phil. 3:20), it is easy to think that this somehow negates the responsibilities of our earthly citizenship. But remember, while there is “neither bond nor free” in Christ (Gal. 3:28), Paul still tells servants to “be obedient unto their own masters” (Titus 2:9). While there is also “neither male nor female” in Christ (Gal. 3:28), Paul still tells wives to “submit yourselves unto your own husbands” (Eph. 5:22). And while in Christ we are already citizens of heaven, we must still be subject to magistrates.

Solomon warned, “fear thou the Lord and the king; and meddle not with them that are given to change” (Prov. 24:21). This refers not to voting men out of office, but rather to getting involved in subversive anti-government activities. God has said that the meek in Israel will inherit the earth (Matt. 5:5), and so He plans to fix all of earth’s governments for them prior to the establishment of His kingdom (Rev. 11:15). But this world is not our inheritance, we’re “just a-passing through” it, and so fixing her governments is not our fight.

An example from Israel’s past might serve to illustrate this. As Israel was passing through the wilderness on her way to the Promised Land, Edom refused to let her pass through their land (Num. 20:14-22). Why didn’t Israel fight, as they later fought those who resisted them in Canaan? Because God had instructed them to “meddle not with them,” since Edom was not their inheritance (Deut. 2:1-5)—they were just a-passin’ through! Just so, this world is not our inheritance, and so we should “meddle not with them that are given to change” its governments. We are called to “fight the good fight of faith” (I Tim. 6:12), and “no man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please Him who hath chosen him to be a soldier” (II Tim. 2:4).

    By Pastor Ricky Kurth

Titus 3:1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

Philippians 3:20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Titus 2:9 Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering

Ephesians 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

P r o v e r b s 24:21 My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change:

Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Revelation 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

Numbers 20:14 And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us:
15 How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers:
16 And when we cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border:
17 Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king’s high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.

18 And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.
19 And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet.
20 And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.
22 And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh, and came unto mount Hor.

Deuteronomy 2:1 Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as the LORD spake unto me: and we compassed mount Seir many days.
2 And the LORD spake unto me, saying,
3 Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.
4 And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:
5 Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.

1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

2 Timothy 2:4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

I’ve been watching him for weeks. So sad to see him go, but it was time to leave the nest.

        • nwtex says:

Really! Wow! How did you know about him, JTR? I just happened upon a tweet. Oh, maybe the news.
Slow moving but interesting, I bet, watching them in the nest, huh.

      • Janie M. says:

Sweet baby, nwtex… always sad to see them leave the nest. You worry about them hitting hazards while developing their flying skills. Fortunately, Simba is out in the wild, no buildings/glass windows to worry about. There is no mention of whether he will return to the nest. I wonder if his parents will bring him fish or he just instinctively knows to fish in the lake. I have never followed an eagle nest via their webcam so I don’t know anything about their developmental skills.

Our Red-tailed chicken (for weeks) would be “flappercizing” in the nest – sometimes whapping the other chicks and getting some air. They eventually all fledged but still briefly returned home. Dad and mom continued to bring them prey (usually voles or birds) since they hadn’t developed their hunting skills. Although 1 of the chicks (think it’s I-2) has managed to catch a few birds. Once in a great while, one of the chicks is caught on the nest cam visiting. But they don’t hang around for long.

          Thx for that Janie—-very interesting.

I brought that video up to full screen…awesome!! I am surprised at how concerned I am for him after just a 30 sec video. My eyes even welled up and did the same now!
Especially since reading that his sister, Cookie, died (broke my heart) so he’s all alone! I hope he isn’t worried.

How far away do the parents stay to keep an eye on their little ones. Do they come by every day? Multiple times??

It is flat out amazing how this whole thing (animal kingdom) works. God’s creation leaves me breathless.

I now know why/how you became attached to the little guys you watch.

This photo is all time wonderful! And look at those “feet”!
          Sorry Cookie 😦

After all of the Cornell Red-tailed hawks fledged (always 3 of them), the parents would perch nearby on buildings/structures, keeping an eye on their brood. They are also territorial and would chase other large birds (usually just passing through) out of their territory on campus. The chicks also still beg for prey (haven’t honed hunting skills) from the parents… you can hear them crying out. They are the same size as the parents, they grow rapidly.

Our birders on the ground, Karel (pronounced “Carl”) and Cindy follow, live-stream and record them all over their campus territory. They make sure all 3 of the chicks are accounted for and they tend to hang out together.

I began following them with the “C” series of chicks (always 3 of them hatch annually). We are now up to the “I” set, I-1 to I-3. We skipped a year between between the G and H series due to Ezra’s (Big Red’s former mate) death. He sustained a serious injury and had to be euthanized. The number designation comes from the order in which they hatched.

“Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew v. 20

The characteristic of a disciple is not that he does good things, but that he is good in motive because he has been made good by the super-natural grace of God. The only thing that exceeds right-doing is right-being. Jesus Christ came to put into any man who would let Him a new heredity which would exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees. Jesus says – If you are My disciple you must be right not only in your living, but in your motives, in your dreams, in the recesses of your mind. You must be so pure in your motives that God Almighty can see nothing to censure. Who can stand in the Eternal Light of God and have nothing for God to censure? Only the Son of God, and Jesus Christ claims that by His Redemption He can put into any man His own disposition, and make him as unsullied and as simple as a child. The purity which God demands is impossible unless I can be remade within, and that is what Jesus has undertaken to do by His Redemption.

No man can make himself pure by obeying laws. Jesus Christ does not give us rules and regulations; His teachings are truths that can only be interpreted by the disposition He puts in. The great marvel of Jesus Christ’s salvation is that He alters heredity. He does not alter human nature; He alters its mainspring.

The Hong Kong mess escalates. The earlier assault by masked thugs on subway goers where police response seemed to be orchestrated by the government and the more recent demonstrations that were met with a hail of rubber bullets and tear gas show a ramping up by pro-Beijing forces in Hong Kong.

The PLA has forces in Hong Kong already and there are reports of PLA forces being deployed close to the Mainland/Hong Kong ‘border’. Now a member of the Chinese government has said that China would intervene in Hong Kong if the situation gets ‘out of hand’. So now we have to see what the Mainland considers ‘out of hand’ and if they think the fallout they’d receive from invading Hong Kong would be manageable.

So far a number of countries have expressed their ‘concern’ over Beijing’s potential actions with Beijing releasing the usual political responses, BUT just two weeks after Beijing announced a huge military exercise right next door to Taiwan there’s no sign of any activity. The exercise was briefed as a routine one but the size of it, the types of units involved and timing of it (just after a US $2.2 billion arms sale to Taiwan) scream ‘INVASION PRACTICE’. Might Beijing be thinking that a move into Hong Kong would tell them what the response from the interested nations might be if they made a forceful move on Taiwan?

Beijing’s running out of patience and sees Hong Kong and Taiwan as real political problems, the renegades show that Beijing doesn’t have the control that it tries to project to the world. The US agreed to a ‘One China’ policy but still supports Taiwan with arms sales. Hong Kong still hasn’t drunk the Mainland Kool-Aid and a number of nations don’t seem happy with Beijing absorbing it and changing its culture. I’m just wondering how long Hong Kong’s going to sit on the side trying to push these round pegs into a square hole before they just say “**** it” and move. Maybe until the US’s next Democratic Congress/President?

    Garden report….

First picking of my green beans…I’m about halfway through….not a huge harvest but this IS the first picking and the vines are hanging full of little ones! 🙂

Squash is still going…I made more zucchini bread last night, and we’ll be having green beans and fried yellow squash and onions for supper. 🙂

Going to pull the egyptian onions later today…dry the best top sets for replanting in October…and tomorrow, I’ll spend a while chopping the bulbs for the freezer. They do not make big bulbs – they’re usually about golf ball sized or smaller, and require some work to get them cleaned up and ready to chop. And, they’re certainly not the BEST onions in terms of flavor, but … they’re hardy as can be, and super reliable.

Slicer tomatoes are starting to come in, have had a few sandwiches already. Still a favorite, that first tomato sandwich of the summer….mmmmm….

Various peppers are coming in, so it’s time for fresh salsa! Hope to have enough to roast and freeze some poblanos….love adding those in winter soups….

    Okay, back to bean pickin’…

      • mandy says:

Our spring was cold – the first beans I planted were up and got bad chilled in a cold snap. It didn’t freeze them but they’ve not done as well as the second planting, made about 3 weeks after.

The later planting is on a trellis (concrete reinforcing wire inside a frame, they’re around 6′ tall, about 3.5 feet apart). I was in that center section, bent over and picking the trellis to my right. I stood up, looked to my left and …. RIGHT THERE AT EYE LEVEL WAS A TWO FOOT LONG GARTER SNAKE!

lol, scared the crap out of me!

I went and got some leather gloves and a bucket, so I could move him off the trellis…when I touched his tail he shot down that trellis REALLY FAST! lol! I didn’t see where he went, but he wasn’t on the trellis so I was able to finish picking the beans. First snake I’ve seen out there this year. I do not like them, but I don’t kill non poisonous ones….

Summer Heat Wave? It’s Global Warming… Or Is It?

Meanwhile, none of the CNN stalwarts conducting the debate will dare ask this simple question because it blows a hole in their narrative worse than any the Iranians will ever put on a tanker. “Has the duration and extent of heat waves gone up or down in the last century?”

Answer: Not just down but way down. According to Chris Martz of Weather Facts (and, yes, he has them, replete with graphs; check it out), the average duration of heat waves is 41 percent shorter than it was in the 1930s. They lasted nine days then to six and a half now. Not only that, average high temperatures in the 1930s, when industrialization was minuscule compared to today, were considerably above (roughly two degrees) what they are now. The thirties were a depressed time — and a hot one on top of that.

Another question neither Andersen Cooper nor Jake Tapper will be posing is: “When was Antarctica warmer — now or a thousand years ago?” Answer: a thousand years ago. Obviously, you realize where I’m going here.
