FBI San Bernardino: “We Need Your Help” – Missing 18 Minutes of Terrorist Activity….

The FBI investigators in San Bernardino held a press conference today outlining their progress on Tracking the activity of the terrorists, Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik on December 2nd.

Within the presser the FBI are seeking help from anyone who can assist them in filling in an 18 minute time-gap from 12:59pm to 1:17pm on December 2nd (see video):

It is great news to hear the FBI have accounted for much of the critical three-and-a-half hours many of us have discussed consistently from the outset. From the presser and subsequent Q & A, the FBI detail a very specific geography of travel by the terrorists.

san bern terrorists

Interestingly, neither Syed or Tashfeen appeared to be trying to escape the regional geography in/around the Inland Regional Center.

Quite the opposite, the travel pattern showed them intent on staying essentially close to the vicinity of their home and attack target, doubling back and zig-zagging on a route within a specific boundary area.

Anyone who can assist the FBI to fill in those missing 18 minutes is urged to contact the regional FBI office at 1-800-225-5354 and select option #4. You will be given instructions to a specific URL destination where you can upload your data and/or information.

You could be correct. The Special Agent “could not provide, at this time” the general locations of the SUV at the 12:59pm mark or the 1:17pm mark in their timeline. They also did not supply any photos of the SUV captured on the traffic or security cameras that they claim corroborates it’s “known” locations (ie the single parking lot that the SUV was supposedly sitting in for several minutes).

Actually, there was quite a bit of info that they did not bring with them into the presser to answer some of the obvious questions reporters would have. I would also tend to lean towards some kind of “fishing expedition” by the FBI…. question is for what reason? To stir up more chatter?

Does Ford have some sort of “OnStar” system a la Government Motors? I am assuming that if big brother wants to know your location, they have the ability to find you via the multiple “chips” in all later model vehicles like the Ford Expedition the lovely Tashfeen was driving. I think they probably know the location of the vehicle, but not necessarily the location of the newlyweds. Perhaps they had to meet the imam so he could administer last rites.

So, the fact that the FBI is making a public plea for help in those “lost” 18 minutes could possibly point to them not locating or having in their possession the GoPro camera’s and/or the footage from the GoPro cameras?

The Special Agent also plainly stated that the FBI wants to make sure the moose limb love birds did not visit any other “businesses or persons”, which leads me to suspect the FBI may believe that they in fact did visit either of those.

With the jaw dropping criminal complaint of Enrique Marquez in mind, the FBI is definitely reaching out to the public with both requests and warnings.

The approach is the most unusual thing I’ve ever witnessed. Their messaging is clearly a request for crowd-sourcing intel, but remarkably they are not too subtle in how they are requesting it. It’s like the FBI is saying “we’re on your side”, as they fight within a highly political Department of Justice.

      Just remarkable.

But they certainly did not supply any useful information to go along with their plea. Like the last known general locations close to the beginning and end of the missing time frame.

There also seems to be no flights that occurred today and the last suspected FBI plane I’ve seen was on the 2nd and a DHS plane in another area south of San Bern yesterday.

Come to think of it, there has to be something pretty specific they are looking for in that 18 minute window.

Are they trying to force chatter? Or a witness/business that has gone silent, putting pressure on them by going public?

There are huge gaps in their timeline, but the FBI is sure of their locations based on the cameras during those gaps, all except during a pretty specific 18 minute span. Other than driving around randomly, the FBI knows they made 2 stops; at the park/lake and at a parking lot (pretty specific on the time of the lake stop, yet nothing about the parking lot). Wonder if they were not in the SUV while in the parking lot which is the 18 minutes of no known location? If so, that would suggest that the couple got out of the SUV to either meet someone or make a drop somewhere in the vicinity of the parked car. Where was the parking lot? Did they get into another vehicle, which is why they could be anywhere in an almost 20 square mile area during that time?

They have been monitoring several mosques based on the flight history of 13 (possibly 14) planes gathering data in the LA basin over the last month. Also, the SBPD and SB Sheriff were pretty specific on having visited/interacted with and talked to the moose limb community.

I think the FBI/DHS want to crack this shadow cell, that appears to be working in the area, up and finally know how big of a network they are dealing with. That can only happen by letting the cell stay in play and talking, as the Colonel put it, “$h!t” about how the FBI is so stupid. By making this public plea the FBI is, I believe, making any other possibly moose limb co-conspirators start to feel comfortable in hopes that they slip and forget to use trade craft skills.

It’s not really a public plea at all…. like Sharon said they (FBI) KNOW what happened in that 18 minute gap. The FBI just wants to see where the roaches scurry when they yell into the media megaphone.

First, the fact that the FBI is crowd sourcing the 18 minutes is confirmation to me that they also crowd sourced the apartment when they let it be opened to the press.

Second, these were not suicide attackers. They shot up the place and left remote control bombs to be detonated from a distance. They intended to survive this, and the FBI said they are unaware of any secondary target. That says to me they had an escape plan, or thought they did, complete with contacts, a safe house, car switches, and at least one other person involved. It is possible their escape plan was blown, but my theory is that there was someone running them who intended all along to leave them holding the bag, it was not the dim-witted friend, and he never did have an escape plan for them. That would explain their aimless driving around: waiting for a contact who never came, no place to go, panicked, fearing they would not survive like they thought they would. Where is the go-pro camera, or the laptop or tablet it transmitted to? Is it still sitting in a dead drop somewhere, waiting for someone who will never show?

Law enforcement would generally be only too happy to tie a string around this and leave it with these two. My instincts say there is more to it than that, and this presser suggests I am not the only one with that gut feeling. Yeah, I like this guy too.

FWIW, LameCherry offered a theory that the Farooks were snookered by Paki intel and AQ, who helped them set up the attack and build the bombs, and promised them an escape route. Then doublecrossed them, disabling the explosives (no one has commented on why they didn’t detonate), dropping a dime on their identity and location, and not providing the promised extraction, thereby setting up their failed escape and final firefight.

Maybe they pulled over and used a drone to fly the Go-Pro’s to the Airport parking lot in the bottom left corner.
They weigh only a couple onces. Their are Drones built with Go-Pro additions in mind. They can fly several thousand feet.
The one linked below can fly 1KM for 23 minutes without payload, 15 minutes with a payload. Which is exactly the 18 minute your looking for.
I used the Google Maps distance calculator and the 1KM range is easily done from the northern edge of the map to the Airport parking lot
They didn’t need to deviate from their home and the Regional Center cause it was along the way, just fly it across the river.
Never come close to it or get seen dropping something, thus why it’s not included.
Someone else can pick up the package later or drive to location while they were driving around waiting for the 3rd party to arrive at the drop location…….
Remember, not planned, spontaneous, thus they needed to drive around and wait for who ever to make an excuse to get off from work and or just drive there.

Thus why the Go-Pro is missing and the Cell traffic is missing any data bursts of video of the killing.
They weren’t looking wide enough soon enough, just like the Boston Marathon quarantine/exclusion zone.

As a drone owner and builder you could program one ahead of time to take off from within a general area and fly to a specific location with not much more than placing it in a open area and hitting the “go” button, since “multi rotor” drones are not really very stealthy – although in a urban environment the noise of the “angry swarm of bees” would be effectively masked if flying high enough (i.e. most likely above 400′ – I live in the boonies and can hear them at 2500′!) but well below general aviation limits so that is entirely possible – and have a reasonable range of several miles (5 or more) – a similarly programed fixed wing drone could have an even larger radius and much less noisy – and they would not have to send the GoPro – just the memory – smaller than a postage stamp

I’m still of the opinion that the attack was carried out by three armed men, not this couple. Farook was probably one of them, but I don’t think “Malik” was. I think she was just the getaway driver.

Also, the police were onto Farook amazingly fast, faster than they probably thought. He probably thought his identity would be safe because he was wearing a mask and he would kill all or most of his co-workers. It’s unlikely they would have foreseen or planned for one of Farook’s co-workers suspecting him and relaying his identity to the police so fast. Thus, I think he believed that he and Malik could just return home and fade into the background. This wasn’t planned as a suicide attack. They intended to get away from the attack, but I don’t think they intended to flee the city or the state. I think they planned to just go back home and start hiding all the bomb-making supplies and covering their tracks.

I think they were listening to local radio and realized that the police were on to Farook. At this point, I think they split up — the other two male shooters broke off and went their separate ways. Farook and Malik stayed in the area in either an attempt to try to get back home, or to be scapegoats and go out shooting.

I believe the FBI knows where these two were during this time period and are trying to spook someone to come forward.

Does anyone know what kind of cell phones were found on these two if any? My hunch is that the feds are looking through their Google cell location data (in addition to other techniques) and know exactly where these two were during the time period in question.

A good, quick article explains the tracking features in Android phones And Apple has a similar system.

    http://trendblog.net/cant-remember-last-night-google-location-history-can-help-you/

Even if you turn this feature off in the phone it doesn’t mean that your phone isn’t communicating with the towers and not sending location data, it just means that Google isn’t going to display that data to you, the data is still stored and is available to the right agency. This even applies to burn phones which can be tracked via the IMIE (cell phone serial number).

When Snowden was on the run and reporters came to talk to him he would make them turn off their cell phones and place them inside the refrigerator (a Faraday cage) to prevent the phones from transmitting the data. He knew what kind of data could be gleaned from a cell phone.

FWIW, I wanted to mesh the FBI, media, and scanner info into a timeline. The times that include seconds are from the scanner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUCYgq6QzIk Does anyone have an accurate time of when the police first broadcast Syed’s name on the scanner and also an accurate time of when the media first broadcast his name? I have always thought that Syed and Tashfeen found out early, either from the radio, internet, or family members calling (Rafia???), that Syed was a named suspect and that sent Syed and Tashfeen into a panic. I believe they had intended to return to their apartment, but once Syed was identified they had to figure out a plan B. I also wonder if they were sticking close to the area because they were trying to set off the bomb at the IRC.

    08:37 S (& T?) left the apartment

08:47 S arrived at the IRC

    10:37 S left the IRC

    10:56 S (& T?) arrived at the IRC

    10:58 shooting began

    11:36:56 S already identified as a suspect

11:45 S & T visited Lake Seccombe “stopped right by the lake”

12:35:24 report of a black Yukon on eastbound Third from Waterman

12:36:34 report of a black SUV in the area of Seccombe Lake park (I think this was a bit stale)

14:57:52 S & T’s SUV was positively identified in the neighborhood of the apartment at Redlands and State, then Tennesse and State

14:59:19 S & T’s SUV was seen parked at Tennessee and Redlands

15:01:22 S & T’s SUV was seen driving past the apartment, “rolled by”, “did a soft driveby”, “and then left the area”

I just want to add that I think it’s interesting that the FBI doesn’t know if Syed left the apartment alone at 8:37am or if Tashfeen was with him. That tells me the FBI doesn’t believe anything that Rafia has told them. Supposedly Rafia was at home when Syed left She would have known if Tashfeen stayed or left with Syed. You know she knows something valuable. She couldn’t have been living in that apartment and not known what was going on. Hello, pipe bombs in the garage? Radical Islamic material? Weapons?

          • YW. Yes, pretty good police work to id him that quick. My first time listening to it, just getting into this a bit so not so bad for me lol. @31:50 someone is asking if they passed his info on so they can follow up on him and get a location.

          • Wow, also very interesting, and apologies if this is old news to people, but the references to them running him the week before is something beyond belief.

@31:50 of dispatch video someone is asking if they passed Syed’s info on so they can follow up on him and get a location. I think dispatch also said something about last week.

@47:48 “They had ran the guy or something last week…”

I see the media picked up on it and say the police deny it all, lol, wtf? ahhh, we have it on tape yo.

Some of us did know about that in the days immediately following the incident, but to my knowledge nothing came of it.

But now that I think about it, and maybe someone else had posted this and I didn’t see it … his brother is also Syed, you know, Syed Raheel, and I think just a week before the shooting cops were called to Raheel’s house for a domestic dispute. So I wonder now if the police recognized the name from that call but didn’t realize at the time that it was his brother.

I have a post in la la land with a link to a LA Times article with a tidbit on the location before and after the 18 minute window. Waiting for it to poof, in the mean time here’s the link to get started

Good catch! When Farook and Malik resurfaced, they were a mile from the center, which at that time was flooded with paramedics, police, reporters and family members frantically searching for loved ones. How does LA Times know they were a mile from the center? This didn’t come from the press conference. FBI leak to the paper?

                Even better:

Authorities were able to track the couple’s whereabouts until just before 1 p.m., when Farook and Malik were near the intersection of the 215 and 10 freeways, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said. Eighteen minutes later, the couple’s SUV was at the Waterman Avenue exit on the 10 Freeway.

That was the part I highlighted in my missing post. There are several interesting businesses located in that area, including the Ismalia Cultural Center.

Also, that area is very close to the reports on radio of 2 men undressing from black clothes at the Hunts Ave and I-10 overpass.

Right. I was thinking that same thing, Hunts Ave report. And I saw your post below with details of what’s in the area of the 215 and 10 freeway intersection. Makes me wonder if they had a storage unit.

Now I’m trying to figure out when the media first mentioned Syed’s name. I swear I heard or read that some media outlet let it out very early, well before the shootout.

I’m hoping Syed and Tashfeen knew that Syed had been ID’d. I am so hoping this. Because it would probably guarantee that they were in a panic and it ruined their further plans. That eyewitness and the police officer who interviewed him and passed on the info right away might have saved lives.

There is some further info inside this LA Times article. Specifically, related to the general area before and after the 18 minute window.

The interesting part is that the Ismalia Cultural Center is near the 215/10 intersection with a self storage place and a UPS Store within a block of the cultural center. There is also 3 other self storage places, a Fed Ex Store and a Truck Stop all within the area of the 215/10 and Waterman/10 exit where they are spotted.

There certainly was evidence that Farook argued with one of the victims who was an active anti-islamic Messianic Jew, Nicholas Thalasinos, that also worked at the center.

I know I seen a statement in one of the first articles that the center was holding an active shooting drill before the attack. Anyone else get that.
