“Spite House” – President Stompy Feet Rules Now Deny Military Active Duty Combat “Death Gratuity” Benefit….

Military Funeral RespectThe “Death Gratuity” is an emergency financial distribution ($100k) to the family of a service member killed in action.   It’s typically sent to families within three days to help cover funeral costs or travel to meet the flag-draped coffins of their loved ones.

Sunday night was not a good night for troops on the ground. A Marine was killed during a combat patrol. A platoon from 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment helicopter assaulted onto target. In the end, four died—two Rangers, two attachments. There were so many wounded by the command detonated IEDs and suicide bombers that the platoon was rendered combat ineffective. For those of you that have served, it was the nightmare you hope you’d never have to face: it was a mas-cas.

But because of what I can only describe as one of the grossest failings of our government during the current shut down (and that’s saying something, I know), the tragedy of Sunday night’s actions are just beginning.

According to sources inside of Special Operations Command, this morning at roughly 0930 there was a video teleconference. In the conference, liaison personnel who were already tasked with the almost impossible job of telling these families their son or daughter has been killed in action, now have to tell them something else: that their government has failed them and they will not be getting any governmental assistance until the government shutdown is over.  (continue reading)

Five servicemen were killed in Afghanistan this past weekend.  The DoD has released the following statement:

“Unfortunately, as a result of the shutdown, we do not have the legal authority to make death gratuity payments at this time.  However, we are keeping a close eye on those survivors who have lost loved ones serving in the Department of Defense.” – Nate Christensen, a spokesman for the DoD

President Obama’s administration *interpreted* the congressional “Pay Our Military Act” to exclude payments of the Death Gratuity.

Washington- Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-CA) Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee made the following statement on the provision of death benefits to families of fallen troops during the government shutdown.

“Last week Congress unanimously passed the Pay Our Military Act with the express intent that all military pay and allowances would be dispersed during a government shutdown.  Judging by the Department of Defense’s own summary of those programs, we believed that ‘death gratuities’ would continue to go to the families of those heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Without question, that was our clear intent.  However, we can never let the welfare of our troops and their families become pawns in a political contest.

If the Pentagon believes they need more explicit authority to disburse these payments, I am sure the House will provide it in very short order.”

Last week, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) Chairman of the Subcommittee on Military Personnel wrote to Secretary Hagel seeking clarification on what pay and allowances from DoD’s own comprehensive list would be permitted under the Pay Our Military Act.

GMTA… (I’ll repost what I just posted on the Wednesday Open Thread)

Since Beelzebub has refused to fund (it could be done without Congress) what veterans call an outrageous slight after the ultimate sacrifice, the shuttered federal government is withholding a $100,000 payment, known as the death gratuity, that is normally wired to relatives of fallen service members.

It’s typically sent to families within three days to help cover funeral costs or travel to meet the flag-draped coffins of their loved ones at Dover AFB.

As outrage over the lapse built Tuesday, the Fisher House Foundation of Bethesda, Md., offered to cover advance grants until the government can make reimbursements to the foundation.

Amen. I will never forget one of the last discussions I had with my Dad. He was telling me how bad this “man” was for our country. He was scared, I had never seen fear in my Dad’s eyes like I did that day. I wish I had listened to him then, he passed away suddenly a week later.
I can only imagine what he’d say about this debacle, and if I wrote it here, I’d probably be banned on my first post here. The Ol’ Gunny’s language was known to be “colorful”.

It’s not – to me – so much that the DemocRATS and their parasites blame the GOP, it’
s that the GOP suits there and takes it. When the GOP does answer it’s usually in a manner that makes the matter worse. If the DemocRATS were smarter they’d just sit back quietly and let the GOP cut its own throat – ripping defeat from the jaws of victory.

LMG, thank you for posting that link. Our tri-community is deeply saddened by this news, huge front page headline. I believe the administration has p***ed off (even more) a large military base here. Hopefully more eyes will be opened wide to what is going on.
And pray for those wounded – one boy, only 20, is local and graduated from our HS.

This “policy” killed ~968 Americans. Zero must have been so disappointed! ONLY 968.

He is not worthy of licking the boots of our soldiers, much less being their Commander in Chief. As a matter of fact, that should be a requirement of running for POTUS, equally as important as being a natural born U.S. citizen. How can you be the Commander in Chief of our military when you have ZERO military experience? Seriously?

Let’s see if I’ve got this straight…. in order to pay the salaries of Congress and the Senate (who are NOT doing their jobs)… we have to eliminate the payments to the families of servicemen who were KILLED doing their jobs. IF the government is truly “shut down”, then these servicemen should not have been sent into harms way in the first place. Where was their “stand down” order during the “shutdown”? Oh, that’s right… they weren’t protecting an embassy.

In the warped mind of Obama, this is all the Tea Party’s fault. If we want this to stop, we need to get the Tea Party to back down… but it turns out the majority of Americans are not buying it, even some of the libs are understanding this could hurt mid term elections for them, not just pressure on Tea Party candidates. it is a sad day in this once great country. Let’s pray that we can turn this around before long and move in a more positive direction.
