Suicide by decapitation, with hands tied? You’ve got to be kidding.

Hey, if a woman can commit suicide in California by hanging herself, naked, off a balcony with her hands and feet tied, I guess this can be a suicide.

auscitizenmom ~ I followed the Rebecca Zahau case & it was always suspected that it couldn’t be a suicide. When a husband is worth billions in a small town, an ex-wife’s sister is seen leaving the home by a witness, imo, the death certificate should have been changed.

stella ~ A LOT more information was provided for those that read it & kept up w/the case as well as 48 hrs. covering the case for an hour as well as Dateline. I did follow the case, it too was covered in National News for months as well as the case was included in Ann Rule’s last book as “this was no suicide.” Countless experts have opined on this case, “webslueth” has a huge thread on the case.

I should say, “*I need a lot more information” before I can come to any conclusion. I don’t usually follow crime stories, so missed this one. They don’t usually interest me.

We had one not far from me, a woman shoots herself in the head but then disposes of the gun as no gun was ever found. It was ruled a suicide. Her family said she didn’t own a gun, had never even shot a gun, none of their guns were missing and she was giving her grandson a birthday party the next day. She had even called one of her kids and said she was going to go fishing for a little while, called when she arrived and said she’d call when she was headed home. Her cellphone was never located either. During this period of time many people were committing suicide around our area lake. I can’t remember exactly how many died, most ruled suicide, some still being investigated.
I quit going to the lake alone due to the concern of my family. I still joked with them though that I was sure the lake wouldn’t depress me so bad that I’d have to kill myself.

I don’t think anybody in my county other than cops and medical examiners were buying all of these people suddenly were killing themselves.

That’s a good question but not one we ever really got answered. Many of us asked it, but we were answered with a question, “do you honestly think three different law enforcement agencies and the state medical examiners office is lying to the public?”

A lot we don’t know about the other cases, the only reason we know so much about the one woman was due to her family refusing to believe them and telling anyone who would listen the facts. They did have a FB page for their mother with copies of police reports, death certificate, etc. It has since been deleted.
I talked to a family member at the store a few months ago and she said that they were getting so many hateful comments that they just deleted it and will continue fighting behind the scenes to get the case reopened.

Decapitated from a hanging?? It would be tough to cut your own head off with your hands bound…man, there are some gross stories out there these days!!

d’hack, not if you tie your own hands after beheading yourself ;) If you’re wondering how this could be possible, just ask the members of the crack investigative team who are able to conclude moments after arrival on such a scene it was another gosh-darn suicide.

This happened last year. It was one of those things you heard about then it just dropped off the radar or at least I never learned what happened. I remember it because it was insane that they were calling it a suicide when he was tied up and his head cut off.

If the coroner ever did an autopsy it wasn’t reported or at least I don’t recall it. It was very strange they reported it as a suicide and at least one news station gave the very short clinical version. A man found by his wife in garage, bound and decapitated. We’re respecting the family’s privacy.

I did at the time keep trying to find more information. I do remember I looked up property records and found a name, but I’ve forgotten it now. It was one of those things where it was a dead end. It was very strange.

It’s strange, but not impossible. What if he activated a garage door mechanism to (somehow) hang himself, and miscalculated the strength and range of movement?

No. Its a type of suicide. Not a common one, but an obvious one. You tie your hands and feet because you don’t want to be able to catch yourself before you hit, set up a spinning blade, chainsaw, rotary saw, whatever you have handy in the garage, and fall on it, neck first.

Although the writing of this story is atrocious, it says more about the crappy calibre of journalism than the story itself. The “woman who lives with him found her husband” crap sounds like a Grade school reporter trying to stretch his word count.

Dear God. It being Oklahoma is a worry… did Alton kill others? If this case were on “Monk” or “Psych” they’d be saying “Muuuurder”.

I know there was a suicide by decapitation case recently — a man put a chain around his neck that was attached to something and then got in his car and drove off at high speed…. fill in the rest. I think it was in NY. But the hands and feet thing of this case make it seem impossible.

Hmmm – could the Insurance Industry benefit by not having to pay life insurance if the deaths are ruled suicide? Could that have anything to do with it?

Most life insurance policy have an exclusion on payments if the death is by suicide within the first 2-3 years of policy enforcement. After that exclusion time frame, most policies do pay if suicide is the reason for death.

I can think of one possible and plausible scenario:

He placed the noose around his neck first, then taped his ankles, pulled the rope taught then taped his hands, then dropped himself from such a height, causing such a violent drop that it tore his head completely off.

Remember Saddam Hussein’s hanging? he was decapitated as a result of such a violent drop plus misplacing of the noose

I have read about a few cases where people tied their hands and feet. It prevents them from attempting to save themselves. There are some sick websites out there that will give tips and pointers on suicide, maybe it is something they are suggesting?
The family that Crump became involved with in Jacksonville is a case that was ruled a suicide. The family thinks it is a homicide. They did some research and found other cases of suspicious suicides, but it sure does make the crime stats look better. Maybe Angie got some suggestions from Carvalho on how to improve crime stats.

Some months back a banker supposedly shot himself five times with a nail gun in different parts of his body before shooting himself in the head.

Most people lose their determination after the first nail and quit. But the police called it suicide.

A few years ago I watched a documentary about the last of England’s executioners. He described in detail how he measured and weighed each condemned man to make certain the drop would be long enough to snap the neck, but not so long as to separate the head from the torso. A decapitation by hanging is actually a mundane thing if you don’t know what you’re doing. I was shocked as a young boy observing a classmate easily yank the head off a bird he’d injured. There’s no reason to believe we’re any different, except for the force required.
