Even mo’ funnier if it weren’t so true. Post-Katrina we were asked to help out a Federal agency that did billings and payments for a number of Federal agencies across the US. One of the workers called us over and showed us some utility bills from California and Oregon and each bill came in some six different languages and contained contact numbers for another six to eight just in case your personal language wasn’t printed on the form. The bill itself was one page in English but five to six other pages included were in the various other languages. Same goes, we were told, with election ballots where they were printed in a myriad of other-than-English languages. I still have relatives’ immigration papers where they were required to have a working knowledge of English prior to being granted citizenship and not just promise to vote Democrat. In that same line I also have papers my grandparents were required to sign and have notarized which swear that when my mother was allowed to immigrate she would not apply for nor receive any kind of state or Federal welfare benefits. Talk about historical oddities…
Wow! Looking through more of my mom’s old papers I found some onion skins (how old is that?) with her naturalization papers showing she’d taken a required class and passed a per-naturalization test on American history! How revanchist repressionist is that? How enlightened are our new policies?
