Friday September 25th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

    By Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

“We have… the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” (Eph. 1:7).

The climax of Paul’s first recorded sermon is reached in Verses 38 and 39 of Acts 13, where he declares:

“Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this Man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:

“And by Him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.”

Thus God, through Christ, forgives and justifies those who believe. Nor is this all that was accomplished for us by the death of Christ at Calvary. There is also reconciliation, baptism by the Spirit into Christ and His Body, a position at God’s right hand in the heavenlies and all spiritual blessings there.

“The forgiveness of sins” must come first, however, and the above passage assures us that in Christ we have this — not barely, but “according to the riches of His grace.” Indeed, the next verse continues: “wherein He hath abounded toward us…”

Thus Eph. 2:2-7 declares that though we were once “the children of disobedience,” and therefore “by nature the children of wrath,” “God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us” has given us life and raised us from the dead, exalting us to “heavenly places in Christ…” His purpose in all this? “That in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus” (Verse 7).

When God forgives us He no longer sees us in our poor selves, but in Christ, who took our place, dying for our sins on Calvary’s cross. There He hung in our place that we might now stand in His — “complete in Him” {Col. 2:10).

    Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Acts 13:38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:
39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Colossians 2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

Got inside the venue, watched Air Force Won cruise in, that was right darn magical. Pence was there, which I hadn’t expected. He was excellent. Crowd was great, peaceful assembly, BLM was obnoxious, but no one gave them any attention, except to shout out USA back at them. Extra kudos to the Police, SS, they put in some long hours dealing w/humanity. POTUS was POTUS, I don’t know he does it, he has been going all day long. I got to shake Mark Meadows hand, that was exciting. Made it home safe and sound through the pouring rain. I am ready for another rally.

Interesting bit from our Bible study tonight. We’re reading Zechariah…his vision of the High Priest in Chapter 6.

12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The Branch; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord:

Hubby stopped there…and we turned to John 19….

5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

      • mandy says:

Ooops. Apologies, Sepp – this was meant as a separate post, not a response to the prayer!

      • Rhi316 says:

That’s a neat observation mandy, hadn’t seen that before, thanks!

And the passage ‘and he shall grow up out of his place’ reminds me of this from Isaiah 53:2

“For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.” Awesome chapter along with Psalm 23 have to be two of my most favorites.

When we lived at our other house, my wife found a little calico cat that was living in a brush pile across the street. She brought her onto the porch, gave her some food and water and then brushed the burrs out of the kitty’s long coat. From that point on, the little calico kitty would leave us little gifts of mice, lizards, and birds in appreciation. Whenever one of us came home the little cat (she was only about 7 lbs) would race down the driveway to greet us on the porch. There was one problem, however.

A large owl had spotted the kitty’s daily run and decided she would make a good dinner. Every day became a deadly race to the porch between the cat and the owl with the cat always winning, if only by a few feet. This went on long enough that we came to realize that this tiny little cat was actually playing a game with the owl. Oh, the owl was trying to catch and eat her, but she had learned that she was just that much faster and so could race down our driveway to the safety of the porch with confidence. When we moved to our new house my wife returned to the brush pile and brought little “Calico” home to live with us. She had a long and happy life away from that pesky owl.

Cool story Garrison. My little Kit brings in through her new ‘cat door’ geckos, lizards and a frog before I could discern her mews were not announcing her arrival or indicating she wanted food or attention but ‘look what I caught’! Somewhere a little frog is still loose in the house 😱. Always something going on with her. 😉

      To this we can relate…
Fifi, my first cat would gift me prizes in varying states of distress. The first time, a dead blue jay on my pillow – nearly decapitated. To say it was less than appreciated would be an understatement.
We could do nothing to save the second victim, a sparrow which was taking it’s final gasps of air when dropped at the foot of my bed – uninvited, of course.
The last time Fifi ‘rewarded’ me with the prize of her ‘hunt’ I realized she was actually trying to train me to hunt for the prey, just like her because she would tease her prize and sit back as it scurried until it stopped.
This time Fifi arrived with a pink eyed little white mouse – again on my bed. I awoke to what appeared to be a playful pouncing upon the bed near my feet where the blankets were all bundled. As the haze of sleep faded I realized the latest prize was very much alive and scurrying by my feet with Fifi’s determined claws pouncing on the mattress too close for comfort to my tender flesh….when the mouse scurried, Fifi sat, tail whipping, and staring at me as if waiting for me to join in her hunt. When the mouse stopped she’d pounce.
From then on, Fifi became a 24/7 outdoor cat. My parents were not amused.
Decades later…a male cat, Merlin hunted too. Our children discovered his ‘stash’ which appeared to be years worth of prizes. After years of neglect, the wooden playset in the backyard was deteriorating (kids were teens by then) and we asked them to help clean it up a bit. They discovered within a large plastic bucket in the sandbox section the remains of about two dozen flat and dried out critters stacked neatly in this bucket – Merlin’s stash. Fortunately, he did not think us worthy of training to hunt as Fifi did. (smile)

Tasty treats. Not! I think when cats do this it’s a sign they’ve bonded with you and are treating you like family. Not all cats do this but, when they do, I think it’s an expression of affection.

When I was a kid, we had an orange male tabby that loved leaving prizes on the porch. (Never brought them inside.) One day, two kids from across the street were crying because the tabby had swiped his paw up, grabbed a low flying bird, and had played with it until it was dead. The kids had put the bird into a shoe box and came over to my dad, crying their eyes out and asking my dad what he was going to do to punish the cat. My dad, who was always awkward with kids, tried to explain to them that cats were predators and that this was what they do. Fortunately, my mother emerged out of house and took the children and shoe box with the dead bird in hand.

The other day while skimming the news, I came across this UPI image. If you wish to see it, here is the link:

The text under the image reads: “Ultra-Orthodox JewS pray to caste their sins on a chicken, while performing the Kaparot ritual, before Yom Kippur in Mea Shearim in Jerusalem, on Thursday, September 24, 2020. Yom Kippur is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar and begins at dusk on September 27. Israel is set to tighten it’s second COVID-19 lockdown as the virus infections continue to skyrocket. Photo by Debbie Hill/UPI”

Searching for “Kaparot ritual,” I learned this via the Wiki: “Kapparot is a customary atonement ritual practiced by some Jews on the eve of Yom Kippur. This is a practice in which a chicken or money is waved over a person’s head and the chicken is then slaughtered in accordance with halachic rules.”

The atonement ritual is found in Leviticus. In it, the scapegoat – the goat upon which the sins of the Jewish people were cast – was set free outside the community. The OTHER goat – the one clean, without spot, young and healthy – THAT animal was sacrificed to God.

Killing a beast that you’ve made defiled by putting your sins upon it is the OPPOSITE of the Levitical instruction, and therefore, an abomination to God.

“And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.” Matthew v. 41

The summing up of Our Lord’s teaching is that the relationship which He demands is an impossible one unless He has done a supernatural work in us. Jesus Christ demands that there be not the slightest trace of resentment even suppressed in the heart of a disciple when he meets with tyranny and injustice. No enthusiasm will ever stand the strain that Jesus Christ will put upon His worker, only one thing will, and that is a personal relationship to Himself which has gone through the mill of His spring-cleaning until there is only one purpose left – I am here for God to send me where He will. Every other thing may get fogged, but this relationship to Jesus Christ must never be.

The Sermon on the Mount is not an ideal, it is a statement of what will happen in me when Jesus Christ has altered my disposition and put in a disposition like His own. Jesus Christ is the only One Who can fulfill the Sermon on the Mount.

If we are to be disciples of Jesus, we must be made disciples supernaturally; as long as we have the dead set purpose of being disciples we may be sure we are not. “I HAVE CHOSEN YOU.” That is the way the grace of God begins. Our Lord’s making of a disciple is supernatural. He does not build on any natural capacity at all. God does not ask us to do the things that are easy to us naturally; He only asks us to do the things we are perfectly fitted to do by His grace, and the cross will come along that line always.
