July Jobs Report – 1.8 Million Jobs Recovered…

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the July jobs report earlier this morning.  Overall during this phase of the economic recovery the U.S. added 1.8 million jobs in July, with strong recovery in: Leisure and Hospitality (+592k), Retail Trade (+258k) and professional and business services (+170k).  [Full Report Here]

Strong steady gains continue in manufacturing, construction and transportation as more businesses begin to re-open and provide products and services into an economy with strong underlying demand.  Durable goods inventories are low, those need to be replaced.

“Today’s strong jobs report completes a full week of encouraging economic news, including growth in manufacturing and services and declines in filings for unemployment benefits. The July job gains, which are the third largest in history, occurred in a period when some of our largest states were tightening restrictions in response to rising coronavirus cases.

Even with these gains, far too many Americans remain out of work, and the Administration is determined to provide enhanced, targeted support for the unemployed while pursuing the pro-growth policies that led to the exceptional economy Americans experienced prior to the virus.”

~ Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia

Back in January, warned by some of my Chinese friends I bought a big 96 roll from Costco Business Center and then had some my usual 30+ pack. This was weeks before the Panic, so don’t blame me for that fiasco.

Once the panic, sort of, subsided, I have made a fun trip to buy Top Of The Line Charmin every three trips to Costco or so. Home Depot, BTW, has some excellent price on it too. I got some Japanese and Korean printed TPs -those are for the Christmas gift exchange- that will make my “life more colorful!”… 😉

So, I think we’re pushing more than 300 rolls by now. I got enough paper to block the main sewer line from here to the ocean. It’s a sign of wealth and happiness to stack TP rolls in the bathrooms.

Let’s not even discuss the stash of flushable wipes. 😉

In the meantime, I was told that TP blocks all kinds of viruses, hoaxes and ill fortune so I wrap myself with TP whenever I go shopping. We also TP the house on saturdays.

The HoA was not quite on board with TP’ing the house, at first. But i bought them out with some Charmin, plastic wrap and Light Beer.

The TV was on in my bedroom the other day, as I passed by I heard something about the CDC warning of an uptick in tuberculosis.

So I’m going with adding TB to the covid mix, could also be a false flag event, maybe more riots. Hell maybe all of the above🙄

BTW, if they start pushing TB, POTUS should immediately get doses of the BCG vaccine available. There is evidence that suggests the BCG vaccine provides protection from covid. It’s already known to provide protection against flu and other illnesses. Those that do get infected typically have a very mild case. Studies are currently underway with regard to covid, but preliminary data in countries that routinely administer the BCG vaccine look very promising. The vaccine is 100 years old thereabouts, long track record.

So if the DS is going to push a TB scare, it’s likely to bite them in the butt.

Also, our President just scored a big win in the hell hole of New York.
Killer Cuomo was forced to take PT’s advice and announce that our schools will be reopening.

I can say with certainty that durable, construction products are at low stock. We run a home remodeling business and in the past 2 weeks we have noticed that treated lumber stock is VERY low (can’t even get basic deck boards to build or revamp an exterior deck/patio). OSB is limited to what our suppliers have IN STOCK and 3 area suppliers are telling us they don’t know when they’ll be getting more. Asphalt shingle supply is spotty (some of the uglier colors still avail)–there is a long wait time for the higher end shingles (GAF Ultras are 12 weeks out!!). Prices for basic building components are going up due to low inventory and high demand. Our industry never shut down but the lumber plants did so we used up the stockpile and now that they are up and running again, they are seriously behind……

I’m in a small, rural East-Central Kansas town. Safe, boring, safe and safe. A few years ago I bought a piece of farmland inside city limits, platted it and brought in utilities. Built a spec house to prove it was a real development. The spec sat unsold for more than a year. Then the cities started burning. Last week I sold that spec to a young couple who were getting out of Wichita. My realtor could have sold it 3 more times. I don’t know if this is a real sea change but for now, this small town is a place to flee to.

You can get a hair cut, nails done, massage, gym workout, go to library, shopping at the store of your choice and go swimming at Zoombezi Bay along with going into the Columbus Zoo. Church attendance is still limited but at least you can go to church again. Some churches are just having more services to get people in.

Our Governor, DeWine (RINO) who tested positive and could not meet with President Trump, now tested negative and will get tested again. Just saw him on TV, not wearing a mask, giving out the status of different counties in Ohio regarding covid-19. Just a couple of weeks ago, DeWine told us that if we all wear a mask then covid-19 will go away. Now he has changed his story. DeWine told the people of Ohio today even with a mask you can still get covid-19 because the virus lives among us. No wonder people are so confused.

Even with all that, people are starting to live their lives again. About 50% of people are wearing masks around here. But at least they are outside doing chores, back at work, shopping and enjoying Summer. All in all very positive.

Curtis Suttle from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver compared the number of viruses in the oceans alone to the number of stars in the Universe, which is estimated to be 1023.

Viruses outnumber stars by a factor of 10 million. If you lined them all up, that line would be 10 million light years long!

To put it on a more conceivable scale, it’s been estimated that each day, more than 700 million viruses, mainly of marine origin, are deposited from Earth’s atmosphere onto EVERY SQUARE METER of our planet’s surface.”

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-ancestry-m-a-blackstone-group/blackstone-to-acquire-ancestry-com-for-4-7-billion-idUSKCN2512ES

Reading the financials today was somewhat dismayed about this. Have several people that have done this. I never thought it was a good idea to let someone have my DNA. I am thinking about writing POTUS about Bioethics. I don’t trust these worldwide Corporations or their boards….

Blackstone to acquire Ancestry.com for $4.7 billion
    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-ancestry-m-a-blackstone-group/blackstone-to-acquire-ancestry-com-for-4-7-billion-idUSKCN2512ES

What the Hustle article said about this:

A private-equity firm bought Ancestry.com for $4.7B. Here’s what they might do with it.
The Blackstone Group is acquiring a 75% stake in Ancestry.com for $4.7B.

It’s a major move at a tricky moment
Two DNA-testing kingpins, Ancestry and 23andMe, laid off workers this year when consumer demand sagged. They kinda have the D2C mattress problem — a customer might buy one kit, but who needs two?

So we put the puzzle to our Trends community: Why is Blackstone going big on a DNA testing company?

Amanda Black, owner of The Solo Female Traveler Network, was unnerved: Just before hearing the news, she got a kit, used it, and returned it in the mail. “I thought it was weird how many times I was asked if they could keep my info and also told me they were going to be using my results,” she said. “This is interesting and uncomfortable.”

    Here’s what others told us

Jon Khaykin from IPOs.fyi says the DNA/health data is a “huge moat” for Ancestry. By licensing it to a biopharma giant, “These companies could use the health information to research diseases as well as find and recruit research subjects.”

Chi Odogwu, co-founder, Odogwu Digital Media, says screening for predisposition to diseases could work like a Minority Report for healthcare. Another opportunity: “Marketing for customized fitness and health plans via subscription newsletters.”.

Maybe the Chinese delegation brought some fresh COVID 19 when they visited:

Pompeo Quietly Meets Chinese Counterpart Amid Mounting Tensions
The top U.S. diplomat’s furtive meeting in Hawaii comes as John Bolton’s tell-all roils Washington.

      OR……

COVID 19 came from China…..IDK, maybe it is the population issue similar to what happened in Italy where the Silk Road Chinese population was suspected of bringing COVID 19 into their population increasing the COVID 19 cases..

      Honolulu Diversity
Asian Americans are the majority in Honolulu. The largest ethnic groups include Japanese (20%), Filipinos (13%), Chinese (10%), Koreans (4%), Vietnamese (2%) and Asian Indians (0.3%). Those of just Native Hawaiian ancestry is just 3.2% of the population today. Samoan Americans account for 1.5% of Honolulu’s population, Marshallese people account for 0.5%, and Tongan people make up 0.3% of the population. Hawaii is the only U.S. state with an Asian majority.

I got some downhearted news from my husband, though. He went to a plant in Canal Winchester, Ohio, and found out they will be closing shop and going to the Juarez area. This is HiFI, they made head rests for vehicles. Also, Lear, that took over Renosol in Hebron, is moving out of state to Alabama and North Carolina and also a place in Mexico. The building in Hebron will be raised. At least the some manufacturing is staying in the states, but this does not bode well for Ohio. I don’t understand why the HIFI company is moving to Mexico but my husband says that company is not run well and they are very cheap. But a few hundred jobs will be lost between the two in Ohio. Which makes me wonder if we’re not so business tax friendly here or what and how is NC and Alabama much better for business?

It is possible that both NC and Alabama are Right to Work states, so no one is forced to join a union??? I don’t know that for sure. But that is why companies come to Texas.

Possibly they are moving to Right to Work states. In 1984 my company moved from the San Francisco peninsula to Georgia for that reason.
There was a strike. the company offered a 10, 5, 5 (percent increase per year) and the union wanted a lot more. It cost the company $35,000 to employ a journeyman machinist and the Union wanted to raise that to $45,000 in three years. The employee’s salary would have gone from$20,000 to $24,000. The other $6,000 was to to to the union pensions to pay out to the members whose companies got chased out in previous years by that union.
In 1950 there was 20,000 union machinists between San Francisco and San Jose (50 miles). When we left in 1984, there was 1150. This is what happened to Detroit.

Speaking of jobs, the CEO of the TVA, who is paid EIGHT MILLION BUCKS for his smarts and expertise, has no f’in idea that getting fired means you lose your job and income, thereby causing great suffering for you and your family.

“We were wrong in not fully understanding the impact on our employees, especially during the pandemic,” said Tennessee Valley Authority CEO Jeff Lyash in a statement Thursday.”

Tried for 2 days in 3 states to by a living room set from Big Lots for my son who is moving. Despite their website showing inventory in several stores, they don’t actually have any, and if they sold the floor models they’d have nothing in their stores- they would be bare.
We can order it, but it may take 2 months to receive.
Also, I have clients anxious for housing, but inventory is low. Would be sellers cannot get new homes built to completion because of shortages in lumber, appliances, fixtures…you name it. They can’t sell because they have no where to go.
If states would lift the shutdowns, things would ramp up quickly.
This is not like previous recessions, people are able and willing to buy. The consumer is ready. There’s just nothing to consume!!

The only place I have found stock is Wayfair. They seem to have bought very early on, and still have half way decent inventory.

Even some of my wholesale furniture manufacturers do not have the stock that Wayfair does.

This is an example of how the US economy is incredibly resilient to socialism and government control. Imagine what these numbers would be without the absurd mandates. Colorado still has restrictions in place even though we’re down to single-digit deaths PER WEEK and cases have been falling rapidly. Not that it was ever all that bad here.

The Dow is now at the level it was at in December. Yes, I know, money printing. But the optics of the unemployment rate about to drop back under 10% while people’s 401K portfolios rebound, is altogether good news. Heck, my daughter earned $2,600 from Chipotle because she’s a college student and they have a college tuition reimbursement program. I had her put her $2,600 into her college fund instead of her savings account. Her $2,600 is now worth over $3,200.

Biden is so screwed if the economy keeps bouncing back. Democrats and RINOs are running out of reasons to keep these lockdowns in place. In Europe – they’re about 1 month ahead of the US – is having protests against their lockdowns. I expect that to start here soon if the governors keep it up.

  35. I always felt if we could get unemployment below 10%, it would be a huge boost to Trumps re-election. What I was not expecting, was the speed at which we have recovered. This is truly an amazingly fast rebound, Go POTUS!
