Friday May 22nd – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

Yeah, the Brits controlled both what was broadcast and what was listened to, you paid a tax on your radio and if you were caught listening to unapproved stations you got fined. They couldn’t touch the pirate ships, they were in international waters, so they tagged the listeners.

I was into electronics and my folks would buy me the crystal kits and then the early transistor radio kits. I’d build huge wire antennas and though the radio in the old Nash Rambler would get the stations as well or better the building was fun. We also had one of the old Philco multi-band radios that would let us get European and Asian shortwave broadcasts.

Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson has called it his greatest inspiration, and the “greatest record ever produced.” “I felt like I wanted to try to do something as good as that song and I never did,” he told the New York Times in 2013. His efforts were most explicit on “Don’t Worry Baby,” a 1964 hit that paraphrases the “Be My Baby” groove and lush sound — one of the earliest of a legion of imitators that would keep the song feeling as ubiquitous today as it was 50 years ago. —BILLBOARD Magazine / 2013

    Contextualizing the Gospel

    by Pastor Paul M. Sadler

“I have a question regarding something I believe is called contextualizing of the gospel message…I would like to understand more about this….”

The contextualizing of the gospel is a concept that has been popularized by the emergent churches out west, which in itself is a cause for concern. It is essentially an attempt to accommodate social change, culture, tradition, and religious views of other so-called faiths when presenting the gospel. The Word of God is then conformed, as needed, to adapt to these areas more effectively to minister to others.

For example, the Muslim holds a monotheistic view of Allah. That is, there is only one true God. Contextualizing theology asks the question whether this is compatible with Christianity since it also holds to a monotheistic view of God. With what appears to be common ground they feel they have an open door to advance the gospel. While this is only one facet of contextualizing, it is a practice that is questionable at best, and in some cases heretical.

The Word of God stands alone as the final authority in all matters of faith and practice. It does not need the assistance of concepts, which only serve to undermine the Scriptures. There is one true and living God whose name is Jesus Christ, “For in Him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (Col. 2:9). All other gods or views of gods are false!

WaPo is posting that it has information the Beijing is going to unilaterally impose its national security laws on Hong Kong. Those laws were supposed to be passed by the Hong Kong legislature but protest by Hong Kong citizens have slowed the process to a crawl, ‘irritating’ the CCP.

Over the months China’s moved troops to the Mainland/Hong Kong border, beefed up military staging sites in Hong Kong and had Chinese military figures make ‘unofficial’ threats against the protestors. If China does impose those national security laws it’s sure to cause more demonstrations and further yank on the dragon’s tail.

China’s been worried about foreign reactions to its hardlining Hong Kong but as the COVID pandemic has strained China-West relations to a near breaking point China’s had a few military and government figures openly discuss the possibilities of a limited military confrontation between China and the West, especially the US. They aren’t talking all-out nuclear war but more of a limited conventional confrontation – many believe in the South China Sea between US naval forces pushing the idea of the Sea being international waters and China’s claim that it belongs to them. The imposition of the security laws on Hong Kong, the West’s reactions to China’s reactions to the inevitable protests and China’s desire to push its status in the matter on top of the fallout from the COVID pandemic just might cause an incident that could easily spiral out of control.

I’m waiting to see what Japan starts saying through its unofficial outlets.

I got a chance to see Steely Dan when the first decided to tour again. It was kind of funny because it was the first concert that I had been to since I was around college age so maybe 15 years or so. As soon as the lights went down so many lighters came to life it was like an encore. I never smelled so much pot in my life at a concert and I’ve been to a decent amount.

    NOW THIS EXPLAINS IT

“That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us.” John xvii. 21

If you are going through a solitary way, read John xvii., it will explain exactly why you are where you are – Jesus has prayed that you may be one with the Father as He is. Are you helping God to answer that prayer, or have you some other end for your life? Since you became a disciple you cannot be as independent as you used to be.

The purpose of God is not to answer our prayers, but by our prayers we come to discern the mind of God, and this is revealed in John xvii. There is one prayer God must answer, and that is the prayer of Jesus – “that they may be one, even as We are One.” Are we as close to Jesus Christ as that?

God is not concerned about our plans; He does not say – Do you want to go through this bereavement; this upset? He allows these things for His own purpose. The things we are going through are either making us sweeter, better, nobler men and women; or they are making us more captious and fault-finding, more insistent upon our own way. The things that happen either make us fiends, or they make us saints; it depend entirely upon the relationship we are in to God. If we say – “thy will be done,” we get the consolation of John xvii., the consolation of knowing that our Father is working according to His own wisdom. When we understand what God is after we will not get mean and cynical. Jesus has prayed nothing less for us than absolute oneness with Himself as He was one with the Father. Some of us are far off it, and yet God will not leave us alone until we ARE one with Him, because Jesus has prayed that we may be.

The above video is from the archives of the Reagan Library, and as a whole it is The Gipper’s commentary on his relationship with John Wayne. However, about halfway in he tells the story of how Staiin tried to infiltrate Hollywood, it’s cued to start at that point. Of note is that the communists knew the importance of Hollywood as a vehicle for propaganda, and also the techniques that they used to attempt infiltration of the various Tinseltown guilds is important.

Remarkably, this is still going on today. Whether it be a school board meeting, city council, or plan commission, the leftists still use the same tactics President Ronald Reagan describes here,

Considering relatively recent events regarding China and say, the NBA, ESPN, et all, they (the communists) are still trying to influence our culture. Consider that ALL of the major television networks have film studios in their portfolios (ABD Disney, NBC Universal, FOX 21st Century, CBS Paramount, CNN Warner Bros). Also consider that AMC Theaters are owned by the Chi Coms, that major funding for production of movie making comes from China. It is simply not in the best interests of the networks to report honestly on the failings of our dependence on the Chinese. Their bottom line depends on Red China funding their projects, and in turn being able to release the finished product to the huge market of 1.6 billion Chinamen.

China is going to do everything that they can to influence this election. I hope the video that I linked to above helps to make many aware of what to look for, so that we can attempt to contain whatever tricks that they try.

(PS, as a member of the media, regulation is needed in our industry once again. there is simply too much power in too few hands…consolidation has wrecked our objectivity).

It is both a warm reminder of Reagan’s patriotic awareness, style and grace, as well as a stark reminder of the Chinese communists’ long standing influence that is ever present and always working to undermine our culture. Those who doubt this threat are doomed to suffer its consequences.
