Sunday September 22nd – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

    If you happen to find yourself in Barcelona by all means pay a visit to the Solera Flamenca guitar shop. If you happen to stop in at the right time, most likely on a Saturday morning, you just might find Antonio Rey or another talented local guitarist trying out the newly arrived guitars. In this video, Rey is playing a “nuevo Flamanco” fantasia which incorporates jazz idioms into the traditional “en compas” flamenco structure.

    • As a massage therapist, I had a client, a classical guitarist, who was head of his department at our local state university. He was very quiet, so I never asked him, but I was always curious that his hands were so soft! How is this possible considering the nature of fingers on strings continually?

        Guitarist’s finger tips are usually calloused—steel-string players more so than classical players.. Classical guitars have lower tension strings although if you are a long term player you’ll still get callouses where your finger tips come in contact with the strings. I actually have permanent grooves in a couple of my finger-tips.

      Divers are fearless. A truly different breed. When diving off the 10 meter (this looks higher) in practice , an off landing can give them huge blood blisters and even concussion. I used to train for swimming and the divers would be training on the platforms, with extra clothing to soften a bad landing. Risk takers, but beautiful to watch.

      On that thought, after the depression people understood what ‘quality of life’ was. Now, they have no idea. A little adversity goes a long way.

        Yes, I think the Depression made a lot of people who lived through it grateful for what they have. They also recycled a lot. My father had super glued and duck taped a drill he had. I found it after he died. It had one of those cloth covered cords attached. So, it was very, very old.

          Same here. My dad built tools and pullers he needed to fix everything why, because they had to. And he worked on aircraft Most of his life. Its a generation that when lost we have lost more than information but an ability to persevere and still not moan and gripe. That used to be the American legacy, Tump is part of that generation, I love that about him.

    Are You Listening?

    The Apostle Paul had much that he yearned to teach the Hebrew believers — wonderful truths that would have thrilled their hearts — but these truths were “hard to be uttered,” or difficult to explain to them, since they were “dull of hearing.” The word “dull” in Heb. 5:11 really means “slothful,” or indifferent (as in Heb. 6:12). They were not merely hard of hearing, as we say, but were too lazy, too indifferent, spiritually, to pay attention. They were not sufficiently interested.

    This is always a serious condition in the light of the fact that “God hath spoken,” and that disobedience to His Word will be judged (Heb. 1:1,2; 2:1-3). Yet, alas, this is the condition of the professing Church today. The great majority of religious people are not sufficiently interested in what God has said to engage in diligent, prayerful study and, like those of Paul’s day, still have to be taught “the first principles” of the Bible. They have remained babes, spiritually, unable to digest anything but “milk,” and so remain “unskillful in the Word of righteousness” (Heb. 5:12-14).

    What has brought this condition about? Is it because our Bibles are being burned and the Church persecuted for reading it? Is it because God is unwilling to lead us further into His truth? Most assuredly not. It is because so many men of God in high places no longer have the single passion to know God’s Word and to make it known. They could be as greatly used of God in teaching the Scriptures as their predecessors were, but they are “slothful of hearing” and hence can present their hearers with little that is of true value.

    This, in turn, is reflected in the religious masses. They “love” their Bibles, but not enough to study them diligently and become workmen whom God can approve. Let us not be numbered among these. Rather, let it be our one great desire to gain a clear understanding of God’s Word, rightly divided — for His sake, for our own sake and for the sake of the needy souls about us.

    Hebrews 5:11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.

    Heb 6:12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

    Heb 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
    2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

    Heb 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
    2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
    3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

    Heb 5:12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
    13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
    14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

    THE MISSIONARY’S MASTER

    “Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.” John xiii. 13

    To have a master and to be mastered is not the same thing. To have a master means that there is one who knows me better than I know myself, one who is closer than a friend, one who fathoms the remotest abyss of my heart and satisfies it, one who has brought me into the secure sense that he has met and solved every perplexity and problem of my mind. To have a master is this and nothing less – “One is your Master, even Christ.”

    Our Lord never enforces obedience; He does not take means to make me do what He wants. At certain times I wish God would master me and make me do the thing, but He will not; in other moods I wish He would leave me alone, but He does not.

    “Ye call me Master and Lord” – but is He? Master and Lord have little place in our vocabulary, we prefer the words Saviour, Sanctifier, Healer. The only word to describe mastership in experience is love and we know very little about love as God reveals it. This is proved by the way we use the word obey. In the Bible obedience is based on the relationship of equals, that of a son with his father. Our Lord was not God’s servant, He was His Son. “Though He were a Son, yet He learned obedience…” If our idea is that we are being mastered, it is a proof that we have no master; if that is our attitude to Jesus, we are far away from the relationship He wants. He wants us in the relationship in which He is easily Master without our conscious knowledge of it, all we know is that we are His to obey.

    FTA – By most accounts, first lady Melania Trump crushed the Australian state dinner Friday, exuding grace and elegance.But haters gonna hate. Critics — notably the disgraced New York Times — blasted her for the dress she dared to wear. The seafoam green gown by J. Mendel that first lady Melania Trump wore during the evening’s historic state dinner was reportedly already sold out by the end of the night. And this despite the critics. “By the time Mrs. Trump debuted it, the dress was marked down to a mere $1,497 and came with free shipping. And before the evening ended, it was sold out,” The Washington Post confirmed.

    This commenter from elsewhere says it all, imo.

    “Not glamorous enough. Not sufficiently costly. No pizzazz… These low class harpy reporterettes wouldn’t know class if it hit them in the face. They have no idea of what it is to be First Lady – a proper First Lady – of our great country. Her dress was not a goddess dress, but a soft, feminine, ethereal gown for the hostess of a garden dinner party at her home at the end of summer… A state dinner to honor Australia’s head of state and his wife, not a showcase for Melania’s fashions. It was a perfectly beautiful soft-looking hostess gown amongst all the hard-looking blacks and gaudy colors. It was a unique look. It also did not upstage the Australian first lady. A consideration for our First Lady that would not ever have crossed “Look At Meeee!” Mooch’s mind.”

    This is a difficult-to-read article regarding the bomb sniffing dogs sent by the U.S. to assist Jordan in that nation’s defense. Each one of those dogs should be repatriated to the U.S. asap if their health even permits it! The disgusting handlers don’t even consider the dogs as valuable materiel, treating them as they do their pistols or rifles–cleaning them, keeping them properly loaded and in excellent order. But those men don’t think in Western terms of kindness or providing comfort and care for those dogs in their charge. They have been taught otherwise from birth.

      People in the know I am sure are aware of this treatment. I read an article several years ago about similar treatment. About 100 to 150 dogs were killed just because they didn’t want to have to pay to feed them. We should NEVER ever give them any dogs for anything until they are ready to give up their CULTURE of DEATH. 😡

        Aus, absolutely agreed! The immense ignorance of our government regarding that culture is astounding…willful blindness, pure and simple. They don’t want to be in the know because that would mean they’d have to do something un-PC.

        Yes, I personally know Egyptian-Americans who love and care for their dogs and this is not a blanket condemnation of human beings. It is a thorough condemnation, however, of a culture of cruelty and as you say, death.

    Matthew Henry :: Commentary on Job 37
    https://www.blueletterbible.org/Comm/mhc/Job/Job_037.cfm?a=474001

    Outline:

    Elihu here goes on to extol the wonderful power of God in the meteors and all the changes of the weather: if, in those changes, we submit to the will of God, take the weather as it is and make the best of it, why should we not do so in other changes of our condition? Here he observes the hand of God,

    I. In the thunder and lightning (v. 1-5).
    II. In the frost and snow, the rains and wind (v. 6-13).
    III. He applies it to Job, and challenges him to solve the phenomena of these works of nature, that confessing his ignorance in them, he might own himself an incompetent judge in the proceedings of divine Providence, (v. 14-22). And then,
    IV. Concludes with his principle, which he undertook to make out, That God is great and greatly to be feared (v. 23, 24).
