Tuesday July 9th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

    What We Believe

    Scripture Reading:

    “Who also hath made us able ministers of the New Testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.”
    — II Corinthians 3:6

    We have been hearing from a good number of our readers who are confused, perplexed and even concerned over the doctrine of the New Covenant. Apparently there are a number of strange teachings floating around the Grace Movement on this subject, which has given rise for alarm among some of the brethren.

    It is our firm conviction that the Body of Christ falls under the umbrella of the New Covenant. Paul clearly teaches in Romans that we are partakers of Israel’s spiritual blessings (Rom. 15:27 cf. Eph. 1:3-14). There is absolutely no possibility that this could refer to anything other than the New Covenant. One thing that should never be overlooked, however, is the fact that Israel received it by promise whereas we are the glad recipients of it by grace (Jer. 31:31 cf. Titus 2:11).

    As we know, one of the principal blessings of the New Covenant is the blood of Christ. This particular element can never be divorced from the covenant nor should it be. We have often said that if the Body of Christ has no connection to this covenant whatsoever, then our Savior must return a second time to die for the Gentiles. To us this is unthinkable. Christ died “once for all” (Heb. 10:9-12). Furthermore, the New Covenant shows that there is a connection between the two programs of God which highlights His eternal purpose. Surely, He is Lord of all.

    Who could fail to see that Paul charges us to remember the blood of this covenant until the Lord comes: “This cup is the New Testament [Covenant] in my blood: this do ye… in remembrance of me. For as often as ye [Members of His Body] eat this bread and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till He come” (I Cor. 11:23-26).

    By Pastor Paul M. Sadler

    Romans 15:27 It hath pleased them verily; and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things.

    Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
    4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
    5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
    6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

    7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
    8 Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;
    9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
    10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

    11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
    12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
    13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
    14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

    Jeremiah 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

    Titus 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

    Hebrews 10:9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
    10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
    11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:
    12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

    1 Corinthians 11:23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:
    24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
    25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

      Paul clearly teaches in Ephesians concerning how the blessings of reconciliation to God were extended beyond the children of Israel to “the ones far off” who had been “strangers to the covenants of the promise,” and how Christ acted to “reconcile both to God in one body through the cross”:

      Eph. 2:11-18 — “Therefore remember that formerly you—the Gentiles in the flesh, the ones being called the uncircumcision by that being called the circumcision, made by hands in the flesh— that at that time you were separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of the promise, not having hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you, the ones once being far off, have become near by the blood of Christ.
      “For He Himself is our peace, having made both one and having broken down the barrier of the partition of hostility, having annulled in His flesh the law of commandments in ordinances, so that He might create in Himself the two into one new man, making peace, and He might reconcile both to God in one body through the cross, by it having slain the hostility.
      “And having come, He proclaimed the gospel: peace to you, the ones far off, and peace to those near. For through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.”

      Note the casting down of partitions and distinctions between the ones ‘far off’ and ‘those near.’ Note the making of the two “one new man” through Christ, as well as “one body through the cross.”

      “One thing that should never be overlooked, however, is the fact that Israel received it by promise whereas we are the glad recipients of it by grace (Jer. 31:31 cf. Titus 2:11).”

      And yet, whereas Sadler makes a distinction about one group receiving by promise as opposed to another, Paul has everyone of those receiving salvation by grace through faith — from Genesis times (cf. Gal. 3:16) until the time of the Gentiles (cf. Romans 11:25, Eph. 3:3-7) — as recipients ‘according to the promise’:

      Galatians 3:26-29 — “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Now if you are of Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to the promise.”

      DeplorableI, ” two programs of God which highlights His eternal purpose.”

      What are those two programs? The two covenants, the Old one & the one Yeshua brought, the New Covenant? If so, the Old one is fulfilled in Messiah & as it says in Hebrews 8:13–

      “13 When God speaks of a new [covenant or agreement], He makes the first one obsolete (out of use). And what is obsolete (out of use and annulled because of age) is ripe for disappearance and to be dispensed with altogether.”

      There can be only one program now. Jesus is the Head of that program.

      • Deplorable_Infidel says:

        “What are those two programs?”

        Genesis 1:1 ¶ In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

        The two programs are Law & Grace, aka Prophecy and Mystery.
        God will use the Prophetic program to redeem the earth back to himself. God will use the Mystery program revealed to Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, to redeem the heavenly places back to himself.

        Genesis3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

        The prophetic program to the nation of Israel was foretold over the time span of hundreds of years.

        Luke 1:70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
        Acts 3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

        The Mystery (aka the dispensation of grace) was kept secret until it was revealed ONLY to Paul (*) –

        Ephesians3:1 ¶ For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,
        2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:
        3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,
        4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)

        5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
        6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:
        7 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.
        8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;

        Romans 16:25 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was KEPT SECRET since the world began,
        26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

        (*) Otherwise, Satan would not have instigated the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ

        1Corinthians 2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
        8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

        • TMonroe says:

          “The Mystery (aka the dispensation of grace) was kept secret until it was revealed ONLY to Paul”

          How many times are you going to post this, and then how many times will I have to post how Peter had it revealed to him and spoke of it in detail in Acts 10, 11, and 15, which amongst other things included the sameness of salvation by grace through faith: “But we believe ourselves to be saved by the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same manner as they also are.” (Acts 15:11)

          And as you quote Eph. 3:1-7, would you care to address how Sadler’s promise/grace distinction works with the defining of the mystery that the Gentiles (those far off) “are joint-heirs, and a joint-body, and joint-partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus, through the gospel”? This of course corresponds with what was already posted
          the making of them and the Jews/Israel “one new man” through Christ, as well as “one body through the cross.”

          The article laments “strange teachings floating around the Grace movement” and references concern, alarm, and confusion. I noticed a few days ago that in one article, Peter was referred to multiple times just as Peter, while Paul was referred to as “the Apostle Paul”:

          The harping on elevation of Paul and Pauline authority along with questionable and errant conclusions (Paul alone preached grace but didn’t include repentance in the Gospel message, there are multiple Gospels, aversion to baptism, etc.) struck me as strange. The often dubious efforts to make distinctions on how people are saved and into what category people are straining to make separations may understandably be the source of confusion and alarm.

    Monsignor Rubén Darío Jaramillo Montoya – bishop for the Colombian seaport city of Buenaventura – is borrowing the chopper from the navy in a bid to cleanse the streets of “wickedness” on 14 July.

      As we all should know, there is no such thing as ‘holy water’, except in the minds of those deceived. No mention of holy water in the book, Old or New Covenants. Spilling it on demons is kinda totally 100% futile. They are the ones who invented that false concept & teaching in the 1st place.

      Only Holy Spirit filled & LED to do so followers of The Way have the power under Messiah to cast out demons.

    “Ye cannot serve the Lord.” Joshua xxiv. 19

    Have you the slightest reliance on anything other than God? Is there a remnant of reliance left on any natural virtue, any set of circumstances? Are you relying on yourself in any particular in this new proposition which God has put before you? That is what the probing means. It is quite true to say – “I cannot live a holy life,” but you can decide to let Jesus Christ make you holy. “Ye cannot serve the Lord God”; but you can put yourself in the place where God’s almighty power will come through you. Are you sufficiently right with God to expect Him to manifest His wonderful life in you?

    “Nay, but we will serve the Lord.” It is not an impulse, but a deliberate commitment. You say – But God can never have called me to this, I am too unworthy, it can’t mean me. It does mean you, and the weaker and feebler you are, the better. The one who has something to trust in is the last one to come anywhere near saying – “I will serve the Lord.”

    We say – “If I really could believe!” The point is – If I really will believe. No wonder Jesus Christ lays such emphasis on the sin of unbelief. “And He did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.” If we really believed that God meant what He said – what should we be like! Dare I really let God be to me all that He says He will be?

    The Bible Came Alive 120 Years Ago in Early Photographs of the Holy Land
    By Lenny Ben-David

    The Bible is timeless. Transmitted thousands of years ago to the People of Israel, its message and prophecy come true in modern Israel today. Some people meet its commandments and narration with skepticism, but photographs of the Holy Land from the 19th-century bear witness to the Bible’s veracity. Here are examples, found in the Library of Congress and archives worldwide.

    The Old City of Jerusalem, photographed from the Mount of Olives, (Ottoman Archives, 1865)

    The history of photography starts with the daguerreotype photographic process in 1839 by Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre. Several photographs of Holy Land landscapes exist from that period, but a newer, cheaper process took over by the 1850s, and photographers flocked to the Holy Land sailing on the new invention, the steamboat. They were fascinated by biblical scenes, holy sites, and people of the land. The photographic process often took several minutes, so some of the subjects had to stand perfectly still; they had to be posed or models used in their stead.

    One of the first resident photographers was Mendel Diness. His 1859 photograph below is probably the first picture of Jews at the Western Wall. Consider the chronological context of the two men: the photo was taken before Abraham Lincoln became president of the United States. George Washington was probably president when the older rabbi was born.
