    Bipartisan bill introduced in Congress
Commissioners Reintroduce The Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act

    June 13, 2019
(Washington, D.C)—U.S. Representative Jim McGovern (D-MA) and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), the Chair and Cochair respectively of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC), along with CECC Commissioner and former Chair, U.S. Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) today reintroduced the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, bicameral and bipartisan legislation that reaffirms the U.S. commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law at a time when these freedoms and Hong Kong’s autonomy are being eroded through interference by the Chinese government and Communist Party.

This legislation makes clear that the U.S. Congress stands with the people of Hong Kong in their effort to preserve human rights and the rule of law in Hong Kong,” said McGovern. “If the extradition bill moves forward and Hong Kong’s autonomy and democratic institutions continue to erode due to interference from the Chinese government, the Congress has no choice but to reassess whether Hong Kong can receive preferential economic and trade benefits under U.S. law.”
“As over one million Hong Kongers take to the streets protesting amendments to the territory’s extradition law, the U.S. must send a strong message that we stand with those peacefully advocating for freedom and the rule of law and against Beijing’s growing interference in Hong Kong affairs,” said Rubio. “I am proud to re-introduce legislation that places the U.S. firmly on the side of human rights and democracy and against those who would erode the freedoms and autonomy guaranteed to the people of Hong Kong, freedoms that have made the city a prosperous global commercial hub governed by the rule of law.”
“We introduce this legislation today because democracy and freedom are under assault in Hong Kong, and it is critical for the Congress to reaffirm the United States’ commitment to Hong Kong’s autonomy, to the human rights guaranteed the people of Hong Kong, and to those peacefully protesting the Chinese government’s increasingly rough oversight of Hong Kong,” said Smith. “It is in everyone’s interest that Hong Kong remain a free and prosperous bridge between China and the world. But if Beijing intends to force Hong Kong into becoming just another mainland Chinese city under authoritarian rule, we must reevaluate whether Hong Kong warrants the special status granted under U.S. law.”

    A summary.

The Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act would:
Require the Secretary of State to issue an annual certification of Hong Kong’s autonomy to justify special treatment afforded to Hong Kong by the U.S. Hong Kong Policy Act of 1992.
Require the President to identify persons responsible for the abductions of Hong Kong booksellers and journalists and those complicit in suppressing basic freedoms in Hong Kong, including those complicit in the rendition of individuals, in connection to their exercise of internationally recognized rights, to mainland China for detention or trial, and to freeze their U.S.-based assets and deny them entry into the United States.
Require the President to issue a strategy to protect U.S. citizens and businesses from the risks posed by a revised Fugitive Offenders Ordinance, including by determining whether to revise the U.S.-Hong Kong extradition agreement and the State Department’s travel advisory for Hong Kong.
Require the Secretary of Commerce to issue an annual report assessing whether the government of Hong Kong is adequately enforcing both U.S. export regulations regarding sensitive dual-use items and U.S. and U.N. sanctions, particularly regarding Iran and North Korea.
Make clear that visa applicants shall not be denied visas on the basis of the applicant’s arrest, detention or other adverse government action taken as a result of their participation in the nonviolent protest activities related to pro-democracy advocacy, human rights, or the rule of law in Hong Kong.

Risky then and now. Did not matter who was responsible….But yes, a distraction.

I have not met a single physician, particularly within the oncology specialty, who does not speak in highly complimentary terms about the “Right to try” program. At a minimum, it gives patients hope where there was none, which is a significant contribution to maintaining/improving their mental health.

It’s like the clinical trial stage of development for many promising drugs has exploded in size which, IMO, vastly accelerates the assessment of efficacy, contributes greatly to the flexibility of improving pharmacological treatment of terminal conditions, and improves the probability that cures will be found sooner rather than much later.

In honor of Flag Day and President Trump’s birthday–

A judicial report card update because it is important to our country and the President to get qualified constitutional judges in office.
    2017- 19 judges confirmed
    2018- 66 judges confirmed
2019- 36 judges confirmed (through mid June)
So far in his 1st term PT has had 121 judges confirmed.

We started the year with 144 vacancies and now have 131 vacancies. We will have 5 more vacancies open up by the end of July and at least additional 8 vacancies through December . (There are an average of 25-30 judicial vacancies per year.)

Hopefully McConnell will continue to fast track judicial nominations.

Judicial Fun Fact for the day:
So how fast would the Senate have to confirm judges in order to fill all vacancies this year?

There are 28 weeks left in the year. The Senate is scheduled to take 11 full weeks off(they have already had 6 full weeks off), so they have 17 weeks in session to confirm 131 current and 13 known upcoming vacancies = 144.
      144 divided by 17 = 8.47 judges a week!
(So far they have averaged 2 judges per week while in session this year- 36 judges divided by 18 weeks in session = 2 per week.)

When questioned today on TV about the name calling, Mitch had a really great, irritatingly smirk and said, “yep, when it comes to socialist, democrat legislation, I’m glad to be the Grim Reaper.” This coupled with his great work on conservative judges and the undeniable fact that he represents the people of a Kentucky who make the very best small batch bourbon on the planet, means I’m starting to warm up to McConnel.

If McConnell were a real reaper, he’d be 100% behind Trump with good legislation. He’s not. So, his claim is unfounded. Great on judges? Well, could be worse, couldn’t it, so we’ll take what he gives there. But, would advise to be wary as this guy is not on Trump’s team.

China builds world’s largest credit reporting system to achieve orderly society
By Li Xuanmin and Chen Qingqing Source:Global Times Published: 2019/6/14 13:17:02

China has built the world’s largest credit reporting system, which will serve as a basic information provider for the construction of a nationwide social credit system that helps trace individuals’ economic activities, restrict defaulters’ moves everywhere and build China into an orderly society, officials and analysts told the Global Times on Friday.

“China has now built the world’s largest credit reporting system in terms of the information being recorded, the scale of data and the scope of coverage,” Zhu Hexin, vice president of the People’s Bank of China(PBC), the country’s central bank, said at a press briefing of the State Council Information Office in Beijing on Friday.

So far, information about 990 million individuals and 25.91 million enterprises and other organizations has been recorded in the system, Zhu said.

PBC officials told the Global Times at the press briefing that the credit reporting system will facilitate China’s ongoing efforts to build a nationwide social credit system by 2020. The PBC, along with the National Development and Reform Commission, China’s top economic planner, has led the efforts in setting up the social credit system.

      Even Kristof is shocked.
China is using social credit idea to oppress religious people, including Christians, as well as Muslims and others. You can search for “China social credit Christians” to read recent accounts of this shameful policy.

I have known people going to China as missionaries, over the years. We heard during and after 2008 Olympics from one friend doing the regular Olympics missionary trip, who noted how they got followed everywhere, and had to speak in coded messages – if the Chinese had been studying their Bibles, they could have easily figured out the messages! I then heard a missionary about 2012 say how Christian home churches were being tolerated pretty well. Now, recently, I have been hearing that China has gone back to being suspicious and antagonistic to missionaries and Christians there.

This antagonism from the Commies helps us understand what the Commies over here think of us Christians, making them OK with social censorship, religious “tests” for government elected and appointed office, etc.No matter what country, the Reds cannot compete when on equal, civic, democratic footing, so they have to grab the levers of government forcefully, use censorship, re-education camps, take over public education, etc., wherever they strive to gain power.

… and slowness in facebook response … any kind of unusual symptoms

I experienced all of that last election (2016). Sometimes I couldn’t even pull down the main menu to log out.

I’m convinced facebook was shadow-banning me so my posts weren’t seen, even by friends and family who would usually comment on them.

And I think they were monkey-wrenching my account – the super-slow response time issues.

      Offline behavior? Interesting.

Doesn’t surprise me. I think Zuckerberg pretty much told us the plan in a Congressional hearing when he said the government would likely have to take over and regulate social media. What kind of CEO wants his right to run his company taken away by government? Yeah.

IMO, all the banning, etc., targeting the supporters of the current “party” in power, is to force government regulation. Maybe the ghouls didn’t intend for the public to know about the tracking of “offline” behavior to find “hate agents” or maybe they did, but we can be sure they (the totalitarian left) are counting on having control of that “feature” sometime in the near future. Had Hillary won, the road to government “regulation” of social media (and it’s tracking perks) would have looked somewhat different, but the destination is the same. So now, it’s all about pushing conservatives to demand it. So far, it’s not worked. Nothing left to do but put the pedal to the metal.

FTA “So what explains the rash of stories about Trump’s certain doom in 2020? There’s a method behind the false narrative, and one relates to the fact that the media and other members of the Resistance are invested in Trump’s destruction. In the years since Trump did the unthinkable and won, they’ve been monomaniacally focused on overturning the election or otherwise making sure, in the words of one Democratic politician, it’s a one-term aberration…For Democrats, the media, and NeverTrump Republicans, the current situation is much worse than they anticipated when their Resistance effort began. One shared goal was to drive a wedge in the Republican Party with elected officials splitting from the president. While the Resistance counts some top Republicans in its ranks, the ones that have tested their anti-Trump message publicly with voters instead of just privately with reporters and colleagues — such as Sens. Jeff Flake and Bob Corker — have been run out of politics.”

The ” media..are vested in Trump’s destruction” so true and widely known yet they still have a strangle hold on shaping the news cycle everyday. Will that ever end and how? Why would anyone with a brain vote for the Democrats? “The most incompetently managed, crime-ridden cities in the country are run solely by Democrats. If they can’t run cities why would anyone want them to run the country? Those cities should be seen as canaries in the coal mine.“ Ron Ross-American Spectator. The trouble is our education system run by Democrat unions is producing scarecrows with no brains! Godspeed President Trump!

Can you imagine all the chatter that could be out there from these idiots after the two tanker hits?

Austin is a cesspool of liberalism, drugs, and debauchery. I am thankful the toll road is available to skirt the city.

Two of my former patients had kids go to UT. They left high school as bright, wonderful, largely conservative young people, and within three years one was pregnant and unmarried with a bi-racial baby and she had syphilis, and the other was a methamphetamine addict with two arrests for theft and robbery.

Both kids had been overwhelmed by leftist students and spent more time protesting and experimenting with drug use and sexuality than they did studying their coursework. Both said that many professors rewarded students for leftist ideology and behavior, and both kids gravitated 180 degrees from their upbringing.

The environment in that city is toxic in so many ways. My last visit was a speaking gig at the university in February, and my host, a 25 or so female medical student, took me for a stroll on Guadalupe St. (the drag) that afternoon to see some local color. I saw a huge congregation of bums dressed like refugees, smoking marijuana openly, and clearly unemployed. She was very proud of the “cultural and political diversity.”

That night a colleague and I went to Sixth street (bar and entertainment district) for BBQ, music, and and pecan pie. We saw drug deals transacted and college girls prostituting themselves.

I never want to go to that city again.

The left lives the concept of never letting a crisis go to waste. They always create the crisis, then implement a “solution” that exacerbates it or creates ripple effect new crisis. OBAMACARE is a perfect example of this, as is the student loan takeover by government. Problems are created, never solved.

Another great example, the invaders who are attracted by Dem policy. Their problems become our problems, ones that we ordinary tax payers had nothing to do with creating, but are burdened with.

“Facebook gets dumped from an S&P index that tracks socially responsible companies”

FTA: Facebook will no longer be included in the S&P ESG Index that tracks companies that practice good environmental, social and governance policies. The indexer said it made the move due to “various privacy concerns, including a lack of transparency as to why Facebook collects and shares certain user information.

Amid ongoing controversy over its use of its users private information, Facebook has been kicked out of an index tracking companies that abide behind socially responsible practices.

S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that the social network no longer will be part of the S&P 500 ESG Index. The gauge follows companies that S&P says engage in responsible environmental, social and governance practices, a growing part of the market as investors seek out more ethical ways to put their money to work. Companies grouped as ESG-compliant have total assets of $11.6 trillion, according to an estimate from the Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment.”
