President Donald Trump Sends Letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi – UPDATE: Pelosi Responds….

President Donald Trump sends a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi regarding concerns over the State of the Union and the temporary government shutdown.   UPDATE: Speaker Pelosi responds; revokes initial invitation; refuses to call for joint session.

Dear Madam Speaker:

Thank you for your letter of January 3, 2019, sent to me long after the Shutdown began, inviting me to address the Nation on January 29th as to the State of the Union. As you know, I had already accepted your kind invitation, however, I then received another letter from you dated January 16, 2019, wherein you expressed concerns regarding security during the State of the Union Address due to the Shutdown. Even prior to asking, I was contacted by the Department of Homeland Security and the United States Secret Service to explain that there would be absolutely no problem regarding security with respect to the event. They have since confirmed this publicly.

Accordingly, there are no security concerns regarding the State of the Union Address. Therefore, I will be honoring your invitation, and fulfilling my Constitutional duty, to deliver important information to the people and Congress of the United States of America regarding the State of our Union.

I look forward to seeing you on the evening on January 29th in the Chamber of the House of Representatives. It would be so very sad for our Country if the State of the Union were not delivered on time, on schedule, and very importantly, on location!

U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 3.:

“He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjo0urn them to such Time as he shall think proper;”

President Trump has a very strong Constitutional authority in this matter. Nancy Pelosi is just being asinine. How far she will push it remains to be seen. I’m going to stock up on beer and popcorn.

Doesn’t say anything about being locked into a 1/29 date; from her letter Pelosi seems to also be aware that date is not set in stone. I wonder if she’s aware there is no statutory requirement for Trump or any other POTUS to verbally present the SOTU msg. He has a statutory requirement to give both houses a written report, and, again, there is no set date, only “from time to time.” OK. Why not send them a written copy of the SOTU msg on the same night he presents it orally? He should send a courier with two copies of the SOTU msg from his physical location back to DC where the courier can physically hand it to the speakers of both houses. The circus we’ve been watching for decades, wherein the opposition party is provided an advance copy of the SOTU msg, is founded on a tradition and not a statutory requirement. If the Democrats want to act this way, let them find out about the contents of the President’s SOTU msg the same way his employers – the citizens – will find out about it, when they hear it. Let them take a week or two to formulate a reply. Any immediacy they want will be lost and their nitpicking and double-talk will sound like the petty bitching and carping it is.

The point is that the President has the Constitutional authority to convene a joint session of Congress whenever he determines an occcasion to be “extraordinary,” not for the State of the Union address. As far as I’m concerned, the problems with our southern border are “extraordinary.” Nancy Pelosi has no Constitutional authority to block it.

Or give it at Howard University in DC with an extra 2,000 seats? It’s a prestigious, historically black college. Invite the Senate and House. He could really highlight …

      – How illegal immigration has hurt the black middle class
      – How his policies have helped the black middle class
      – How his prison reform and inner city development program will further help
      – The BLEXIT movement by Candace Owens & Co
      – Invite a few hundred young Black Conservatives
      – Invite Angel Moms & Dads

Pelosi wants to deny him a national TV audience, which he would kill.

Hold it at Mount Vernon, the home of the First President of the United States of America. Invite all of Congress and have it outside in hopefully horrible weather. So they know the conditions our troops, law enforcement, border control, ICE, etc. have to face each and every day.

It it time for us to take back our country and stop making these little snowflakes lives so easy. Nitwit Nancy and Cryin’ Chuckie, who haven’t had to worry about their next meal or rent check since they started at Congress 100 years ago, are living large. They don’t have to worry about security, cars or airport security.

Notice they always make sure they get paid first. Someone needs to hammer that daily. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? SHAME ON THEM!

They continually tell us about Climate Change and yet they waste more plastic bottles in the swamp than anywhere on the planet, all funded by YOU! The one time they went eco-friendly in the cafeterias it was too hard on them and didn’t go so well. The Wimps Wimped Out.

Mr. President, it is time to tell the citizens the truth. We are broke. Heavily in debt and cannot pay our bills without going to the loan shark daily. Our credit rating is shot. You are doing everything you can to make us rich again, for all of us and our children, but the RESIST MOB is nasty and vicious and won’t go down easy.

Tell American that every illegal who crosses our border is one more American that isn’t going to get their Medicare and Social Security. People that paid into it all their lives and counted on it, and it won’t be there. It was all a scam, a ponzi scheme, just like ObamaCare. All lies. Congress has stolen it all, in a million shell games, and given it away to their cronies and their taxpayer funded tax exempt foundations and favored nations.

And they are still not happy. They still want more. 70%, 90%, it doesn’t matter. They will take it all.

I think that until we get a wall, we should end TSA. Why do we need them, when we are just letting anyone walk across our border? It is a huge expense, for what? Let the travelers pay the expense. I get no benefit our of them unless on the occasion I might travel by air. And the Cost Guard. Why do we need them or the CBP or ICE? Without border security on ALL BORDERS we will NEVER be secure.

There is a time for the traditions, the majesty, the “pomp” if you will, of a just government to be displayed, and to me that occurs when both sides are acting like responsible adults. If they are what you see will be meaningful, it will be worthy of the hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of lives lost over the years to preserve it.

Right now it’s nothing more than, for the most part, a flock of overaged and badly spoiled children on display and with Trump frequently the only adult in the room.

Agreed. Evil, like the ravenous beast spirit which it is, often has no logic, is completely irrational, is just murderous rage. Many good people get perplexed about the wicked Mainstream Media/Public Education system (Dems), wondering how they can be so unfair, so untruthful, such as relative to these Catholic High School boys who did nothing wrong but were plenty wronged. Yet they need to be reminded that evil can be a senseless beast, a raging dragon just out to kill, to destroy without thought or consequence…I mean, satan tried to dissuade our Lord from His mission, His atonement for all sin on the Cross, and yet when that Hour arrived, he couldn’t help himself, he couldn’t stop himself from ripping Him apart. Of course, this proved to be his undoing, for paradoxically by our Lord’s death He slew death, as He then descends to hell to proclaim His victory (the first sign of His resurrection). But I preach…Anyways, the point is, there is an aspect to evil in which like a wild beast it loses all sense of what it is doing, just must kill and feed…

Jim Himes, (unfortunately from my hideous state of CT) just demonstrated that he is completely illiterate regarding the Constitution he is sworn to uphold and serve. Trump merely has to declare this as an extraordinary Occasion and convene both houses of congress. If there is disagreement over the time of “adjournment” he has the power to decide as he wishes. The power and Constitutional authority is all in his hands. Let the Dems refuse to convene if that is what they want, and then let them enjoy the consequences arising from their refusal to honor their Constitutional responsibility.

    • WeThePeople2016 says:

It needs be in a more serious format because SOTU is his chance to talk directly to We The People. The media will not cover a rally – they have stopped covering them lately, even FOX. They won’t take a rally seriously, IMHO.

True. So what will the media be absolutely certain to cover? Pres. Trump’s impending prime time humiliation as he’s but moments away from being physically barred by the sgt.-at-arms from entering the House chamber.

At which point, having convened both houses of Congress (and alerted all television media that the address will occur at SOME LOCATION IN THE CAPITOL), he hands said S/A a copy of his SOTU address, with instructions for delivery to the speaker, and proceeds to the Senate, where he delivers his address to the nation–a smiling Leader McConnell and President pro tem Pence conspicuously seated behind him.

    • spren says:

No, he just needs to exercise his Constitutionally-granted authority to convene both houses, and he has the power to decide when. The Leftists always try to torture the Constitution to oppose him, but he has clear language in the Constitution granting him the power and authority to convene both houses at the time he decides. Let them defy his Constitutional authority at their own peril.

Excellent comment I saw on another website on this subject:
Over the last couple of years, we have been witnessing the collective emotional breakdown of the Democrat Party as they try to remove President Trump from office. They cling to their twisted and failed political ideology with no direction, no plan, and no clue, with only their hatred of President Trump to bind them together.

Enabled and fed by the dishonest leftist media propagandists, they lash out like petulant adolescent children demanding respect, but deserving none. They wallow in their vulgar and violent hysteria; trapped in their tight little echo chamber, telling each other how clever and righteous they are and what rubes those are who disagree.

And they truly believe they are on a glorious crusade as they lead their herd of leftist lemmings into an ocean of political suicide. Resolution declaring the office of speaker vacant

Under House rules, any member can offer a resolution declaring the office of speaker vacant. Also informally known as a motion to vacate the chair, the measure would oust the sitting House speaker if passed by the chamber. The motion is typically privileged, meaning that, once offered, it would come up for a vote in two days and cannot be blocked by the leadership, which, under most circumstances, controls what measures come to the House floor for a vote.

LOL, President Trump does not care!!! He is working on lowering prescription drug prices for Americans. Love you President Trump, even though I do not use prescription drugs. God Bless you…for helping those that are struggling with the outrageous costs for their meds.

  47. I think it’s wonderful how every time President Trump gives Speaker Pelosi the chance to do the right thing, she doubles down on being a completely intransigent maniac.

This isn’t playing well for her or the Democrats.

    Well played, Mr. President.

PDJT is absolutely right to not approve a budget without the wall funding. No question.

But he needs to talk softly and carry a big stick.

He needs to back up his tweets and statements with action and not allow the dems or the MSM to shift him into simply reacting.

The OPTICS and POLITICS of all of this matter.

And before some of you start up with your assinine attacks on me, get your facts straight. I supported PDJT when 95% of you were pushing Cruz or Paul, so kick rocks.

But we have to be able to answer this question:

In mid-October of 2018, PDJT enjoyed his best poll ratings since a month after his inauguration. Now, his NET STRONG APPROVAL/DISAPPROVAL is -16. In October it was tied.

    Why did this change?

    the wall? No.
    the shutdown? No.
    Sessions gone? Barr nominated? No.

It is because, IN MY OPINION, he went from a position of strength vs. Pelosi and Shumer when he had them to tea, so to speak, at the WH, and told them he would shut it down without funding. I think the American people are supporting him on that. It is the OPTICS and the nah-nah-nah BACK AND FORTH that is hurting him…even if it makes some of you giggle.

People expect certain behaviors out of their leaders. Engaging with Pelosi as has been happening is not coming across as presidential. He needs to be seen above it without appearing to cowtow to her.

For example, I have the best country doctor in the world. Awesome man. But I would find him offputting if he came into the treatment room wearing daisy dukes and a push up bra. It would be unsettling. While I would not switch doctors, I would not be very comfortable.

People need to look and act the role that the public are thrusting them into.

By his initial ownership of the shutdown between sips of teas and nibbles of cookies back in December to now tweeting constantly trying to shift the blame to the DEMS (where it always belonged) he is undermining his own brand.

Just DO IT and STOP responding to the witch.

    Just saying.

My preference is a nationally televised address from the White House with a live audience. Pick out a handful of the President’s major accomplishments, both foreign and domestic.

Write the script and have the accomplishments read and presented by well-spoken, average Americans, with an emphasis on how the President and his agenda has made a positive impact on their lives.

Then the President steps in to wrap it up. Keep it short and sweet and under 45 minutes max.

    It’s been cancelled
