IG Report: FBI Officials Accepted Bribes From Media…

On Page Xii of the IG report the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General (DOJ-OIG) highlights numerous FBI officials who accepted bribes from multiple media outlets including: “tickets to sporting events”, “golf outings”, “drinks and meals” as well as exclusive invitations and admission to “nonpublic social events”.

The OIG investigative finding was disturbing enough to launch a separate set of investigations that will be included in follow-up reports.

IG REPORT – We identified numerous FBI employees, at all levels of the organization and with no official reason to be in contact with the media, who were nevertheless in frequent contact with reporters. Attached to this report as Attachments E and F are two link charts that reflect the volume of communications that we identified between FBI employees and media representatives in April/May and October 2016. We have profound concerns about the volume and extent of unauthorized media contacts by FBI personnel that we have uncovered during our review.

In addition, we identified instances where FBI employees improperly received benefits from reporters, including tickets to sporting events, golfing outings, drinks and meals, and admittance to nonpublic social events. We will separately report on those investigations as they are concluded, consistent with the Inspector General Act, other applicable federal statutes, and OIG policy.

The harm caused by leaks, fear of potential leaks, and a culture of unauthorized media contacts is illustrated in Chapters Ten and Eleven of our report, where we detail the fact that these issues influenced FBI officials who were advising Comey on consequential investigative decisions in October 2016.

[…] We do not believe the problem is with the FBI’s policy, which we found to be clear and unambiguous. Rather, we concluded that these leaks highlight the need to change what appears to be a cultural attitude among many in the organization.  (link to pdf – page Xii of executive summary)

FBI policy is unambiguous and this problem is only a problem of cultural attitude? Any agent taking bribes should be terminated immediately and prosecuted…. if the unambiguous policy states that then it should be done and if the unambiguous policy does not state that then it should change.. there can be no confidence in the FBI without consequences and accountability…

From Mollie Hemingway at The Federalist, another great piece of journalism/analysis:

11 Quick Things To Know About The Inspector General’s Report
    An excerpt:
On Thursday, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a long-anticipated report on the FBI’s handling of the criminal investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server that handled classified information. Here are some quick takeaways from the report.

    1. Learn How To Interpret An IG Report
The best way to understand an inspector general (IG) report is less as a fiercely independent investigation that seeks justice and more like what you’d expect from a company’s human resources department. Employees frequently think that a company’s human resources department exists to serve employees. There’s some truth in that, but it’s more true that the human resources department exists to serve the corporation.

At the end of the day, the HR department wants what’s best for the company. The FBI’s IG Michael Horowitz has a good reputation for good reason. But his report is in support of the FBI and its policies and procedures. As such, the findings will be focused on helping the FBI improve its adherence to those policies and procedures. Those who expected demands for justice in the face of widespread evidence of political bias and poor judgment by immature agents and executives were people unfamiliar with the purpose of IG reports.

Having read the entire IG report, Hemingway has a lot to say.

These were not bribes, they were given to the officials as “gratuity” exactly as “gratuity” is added to your bill at all the better D,C. establishments. Those receiving such “gratuity” consider it their due.

    • Daniel Wright says:

A gratuity for what? Did the FBI consider the press as waiters serving them something? There was no service given deserving of a tip. It was a quid pro quo in every case, plain and simple. Much of the leaked information was sensitive and personal. That makes it criminal.

      • unconqueredone says:

Sorry, pure sarcasm. I’ve had gratuity added to my bill in DC when virtually no service was provided, and they considered it their due for simply being there.

First, let me think Sundance for keeping my sanity during the election and all that he does here.

As to the report, I am disappointed that Horowitz did not come up with conclusions that comported with the overwhelming evidence. Keep in mind that United States Attorney Huber shadowed Horowitz during the investigation and grand juries have been empanelled to consider the evidence. The malefactors in this report within the FBI are in no way getting off the hook at this time absent conclusion of Huber’s work and the unsealing of indictments. As to FBI director Christopher wray’s ethics training statements, what if he is acting? What if he is just keeping the bad guys comfortable that things will be the same as they’ve always been in DC for those in power? What if there is a plan in place to actually make examples of the bad guys so that this does not happen again?
I say this because of the president’s campaign promises, all of which he is keeping. A big one was reestablishing the rule of law. It is one that I truly believe he will also keep and it will not bode well for the bad guys. We will know soon enough but I think we are all in for a very pleasant surprise at the end of the day.
