Saturday September 9th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

duchess, a lot of us Okies will end up down there at some point, myself included. A lot of us signed up on a list, so that we/they can rotate in & out, depending on what’s needed and what your skills are.

Yes ma’am. Actually, the plan is…….those that have been working Harvey, get a week of rest, then go to East.

We give payback around here. We’ve had a couple of the first ginormous tornadoes here in Oklahoma, starting with May 3, 1999. We had people from all over the Southern states come here to help. After 9/11 when a bunch of Okie’s went to NY, since we’d had the bombing of a Federal bldg here in ’95. Kind of a kinship….if you will.

Through all of that, we’ve learned that there is a swarm of people from all over in the very beginning, (which of course is needed) but then as the weeks dwindle on, you sometimes still need help, and where did all those people go?!!!!

So some of us around here, are kind of organizing a relief tree. No one can stay/or should have to (it’s exhausting sometimes, not the work, just seeing the devastation LIVE and up close, if you’re not used to it) That way rotating in & out might for example, allow me to spend several weeks, but not all in a row. If I get called up, I’ll alert the Tree, so I can look to hook up with some treepers that might be in the area.

Wow! That is absolutely amazing – so well-planned – and fruitful – God Bless You all abundantly for what you do to love one another as Jesus asked us to do – I am just in awe of all of you!

Hoping and praying for all Treepers to make it through unscathed – but, it is nice to know you will be there for them!

God Bless You All Real Good! Goosebumples – I have all over!

Such a good point, Mama! We aare planning to stagger our material donations over weeks, even months.
Learned some useful lessons from working Katrina relief here in DFW. The inital massive influx of donations is wonderful, but a steady stream is great, too.
May God bless all responders, whatever they do!

During the aftermath of the huge ice storm in eastern OK about ten years ago, no electricity in eight days, below freezing the whole time. Then I saw a long line of utility/power company trucks with Texas plates coming up the highway. I counted up to forty and then stopped, boy were we glad to see them! They got to my neighborhood a few days later. I said to the guy working in my yard to restore my electricity, “This looks likes a war zone, doesn’t it?” He said ” Believe it or not, Katrina was worse.” That gave me pause. He was a volunteer who went to disasters and had seen things I probably couldn’t imagine.
Last week I saw some fire/rescue vans leaving my small town hauling boats, I knew where they were going. Volunteers are special people, what would we do without them? Thank you.

Ah, kidsndogsncats, you live in the eastern part of the state! Oklahoma City here.
      I remember that storm!

A large percentage of the electric companies – especially co-ops have actual formal agreements to help one another.

Husband and I volunteered in Biloxi 6 months after Katrina did her worst. We worked, but a big part of our work was to train others to do the work we knew how to do, so they could train others and so on. Taping and mudding are easy to do jobs, but none of the youngsters who were there at the time had a clue how to install/tape/mud drywall. We left there having taught many people how to do those jobs, and were given the title “Minnesota Mudders.”

More than any work we did the biggest thing we saw and felt was the overwhelming sense of hopelessness among the locals — 6 months later.

For many miles inland the property damage was shocking. Twenty miles in from the gulf we passed a church whose steeple — that had been ripped off by Katrina — lie in a big pile of rubbish.

Six months after Katrina’s destruction most of the world had long forgotten about that particular storm and the people affected by it. But as we drove further south and saw Interstate bridges tumbled like playing cards, and steel frame only buildings that once were churches, office buildings, restaurants and houses we felt our contribution would be a drop of rain in the ocean of rebuilding.

But every storm starts with the first drop of rain, and every rebuild starts with one nail. And without a doubt there will be a job for everyone of every skill or lack thereof once the storms pass. The dog walkers traveled to Katrina territory for that purpose. So did the book readers (not only for children, but to soothe the broken spirits of the brokenhearted), the cooks, the door knockers, the phone callers and the grocery shoppers.

If you have time and can make your way to where people have been misplaced —
      you are needed —
you will be put to work —
and most likely you will be housed and fed by other servants while you use the gifts God has given you.

Greetings from a farm in Southwest Oklahoma! I found my way to CTH during the last weeks of the Presidential campaign and have stayed because of the quality of the Posts and the people who comment here.

I have an Oklahoma politics question on what our two Senators are up to, playing with the Uniparty to thwart President Trump. I noted that Langford voted against the debt ceiling and the Harvey relief funding and haven’t been able to find a good explanation on his reasoning. He had no qualms voting for the Omnibus monstrosity under Obama, which included funding for Planned Nonparenthood.

      Any ideas? I am fuming.

But to sum it up briefly, Inhofe needs to retire, been there too long. Lankford has been using his extra Sen. staff to put more layers between him and us!!!! Grrrr!

ps. I communicate with both regularly..

The alternate version of “Eternal Father, Srong to Save”

    Almighty Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep
    Its own appointed limits keep:
O hear us when we cry to thee
For those in peril on the sea.

O Christ, the Lord of hill and plain
O’er which our traffic runs amain
    By mountain pass or valley low;
    Wherever, Lord, thy brethren go,
Protect them by thy guarding hand
From every peril on the land.

O Spirit, whom the Father sent
    To spread abroad the firmament;
O Wind of heaven, by thy might
Save all who dare the eagle’s flight,
And keep them by thy watchful care
From every peril in the air.

O Trinity of love and power,
    Our brethren shield in danger’s hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
    Protect them whereso’er they go,
Thus evermore shall rise to thee
Glad praise from air and land and sea.

I am so incredibly sad to learn that Eric & Adrienne Bolling’s beloved son Eric Chase has died. It is clear that boy was the apple of their eye.

And I find it utterly repulsive, disgusting beyond words, that Yashar Ali who had been the crux of this media campaign against Bolling on likely fake charges decided to break the story of the loss of Eric’s son. There is no reason to do this other than to turn the knife and kick the man when he is down. Truly despicable.

Bolling is a devout Catholic who goes to mass daily. With his job loss announced yesterday, the loss of his son today, and the stress and memories of his friends lost on 9/11 I am sure he is completely devastated. Please pray that his faith sustains him during this time and that he does not turn from God in his pain.

Lord have mercy, please Lord have mercy on your people.

That weird girl who Anthony Weiner is going to go to jail for sexting or whatever has popped up again, and now she’s bringing politics and Hillary into her story.
Very odd. Hillary’s book is coming out, in which she tries to blame Anthony for her emails being where they shouldn’t be or something, Huma’s divorce hearing is next week, and this girl shows up at this particular moment.
I don’t recall Hillary’s campaign being part of the girl’s story before.
Makes me wonder if someone is paying her (aside from First Edition; I don’t know if they pay people or not).

    lilbirdee12’s prayer:

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

And, Lord, we pray for help for the people of Texas and Louisiana who are caught in the flooding. And, now we add everyone in the path of Irma to our prayer for safety.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen
