Friday September 1st – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

Okay… this is a general question I’m throwing out to all treepers. Do any of you have experience in using the “Humira Pen” for Crohn’s? I was hospitalized again at Hines VA hospital due to a flare-up from the 23rd – 27th of last month. The GI docs keep insisting on this medication. I have resisted because of FDA black box warnings – can cause liver cancer. At 66, it would be debilitating. Thanks.

Thank you, imprimipotest, I visited the site and looked at the diet segment… it would appear everything I consume (which I consider healthy/tasty) is a problem – oy! Almost makes it seem as though I would have to spend my remaining days eating gruel. 🙂

Not as bad as it looks at first glance! You can eat all sorts of vegetables with high fat, like avocados, nuts (cashews aren’t so hot) and things like that, along with normal portions of meats.

But you will likely have to cut out everything with gluten, which means ALL wheat, rye, barley, etc. Even rice can only be eaten in small portions.

You’ll find out that organic OAT bran with whole milk is really tasty. And if you can cut down (or out) all sugar, even honey and fruit(s), it might also help.

          Take care.

Dang, I’m half Japanese and love Asian food (rice)… even kimchi. And LOL, I just bought all the ingredients to make a loaf of Russian black bread (I’m a frugal scratch cook, don’t eat fast food). How to undo a whole lifetime (65+ years) of eating habits? Everything I considered beneficial is now detrimental. Thank you so much, appreciate your time/concern.

The troubling aspect of this, georgiafl, is every single bedside consultation I have had with their surgical team during my confinements at Hines is the discussion of having to have small bowel resections. Had a telephone discussion with my BF the other night, she said one of the problems is strictures can develop at the surgical sites. And the most disturbing discussion one of the surgeons mentioned to me is the possibility of having to have a colostomy bag……that though freaks me out.

My 50 year old brother uses it for psoriasis. Tried everything in the world, since he was a teen when he had first breakout of plaques. In fact, he got in on the first clinical trials of the drug, when there was not autopen, and he had to go frequently for office injections. It has been a miracle drug for him.

But, this was not for Crohn’s.

Sounds like you’re about at the end of the “all other drug options” with your Crohn’s. Why not give it a good try. You’re under Physician’s care. See if it helps your Crohn’s.

Don’t be afraid of the FDA black box. (That’s also an attempt to prevent lawsuits too!)

Now, I say go for it BECAUSE of your age. I don’t mean for that to sound cold; but……..

One of my daughters as a teen, (long ago now) had acne. There was a “new” drug out, Everybody was having “success”, but my Dr. said to me, the only possible adverse, long-term, one in a million, side affect, for 13-14 year old females, was in some of the clinical studies (long before FDA approval) some of those teen girls, were are young adults having trouble getting pregnant.
THAT was not a risk I was willing for make for my young teen daughter. That was her decision, when she was older, should her acne really become a “psych-damaging” influence. So, we/she managed with every other Rx and OTC treatment regimen we could dream up.

Things that make Humira injections hurt less

            1. First, I am not a pathetic wimp, (that you think I am Sis)
This is not about being afraid of getting a shot. Sometimes, Humira feels like a slowly building volcanic eruption of pain, for a short time. The medication is refrigerated. You can leave it out for a couple hours before, up to overnight, per manufacturer. Ice cold from the fridge REALLY hurts.

            2. Pressure
The other major advance I’ve made is: before Cindy stabs me , pinch a roll of flesh tightly between two fingers in the spot she’s about to jab. Tightly. Not enough to hurt, but enough to keep the flesh removed from its underlying bits and to sort of “overwhelm” the nerves with sensations of pressure. You could also numb the area with ice for 5 mins.

            3. Gentleness post-injection
Most of the time now, my injections are not too bad. But in the few minutes just after, the injection site is usually uncomfortable in a distinctive, strange way and any touching or pressure on it is painful, so I just sit there for 5-10 minutes, slap a bandaide on it and go about my business!

Thanks for the video, BigMama. They gave me pens last year, didn’t use them. And I found a video that explained injecting the cold med. would be painful so you leave it out. But that’s as far as I got… wasn’t willing to take the plunge.

BigMama, yes, it’s always that potential side effect of drugs you have to worry about. I learned psoriasis is also an autoimmune disease and can occur with Crohn’s. I has a few small silver plaques on my right foreleg – just used my Neutrogena astringent to dry it out… takes a long time to disappear. I worry about my liver because it is compromised (apparently born with it but asymptomatic my entire life, an accidental discovery) so I am at higher risk of liver cancer. Thanks, BigMama.

Well, if I had not taken the before and after pics MYSELF on him, his first year of treatment, I would not have believed it!

You’ve got to weigh your own odds darlin’ and figure out if complete restructuring of your diet would help, or is possible vs. potential surgeries vs. a trial drug run. You know your Docs, if they’re worth their salt, will be constantly measuring your liver studies.

Don’t know how many of them are actual VA docs because I had noticed all of them wear the white lab style jacket of Loyola University. Hines VA is partnered with Loyola Medical school. That gives me some comfort. I am currently taking an Rx for my liver which is supposed to lower whatever marker? exists (don’t know what it is called – enzyme?) to prep me for Humira.

Janie, I started taking a probiotic 10 yrs ago. The brand I use was developed by Jordan Rubin who almost lost his life to Crohn’s . He also has a book , The Makers Diet , which details what he learned. Has now boomed into whole line called the Garden of Life.

“Jordan Rubin’s quality of life was nonexistent. To find some viable therapy, he consulted over 70 health practitioners worldwide and tried more than 200 different nutritional products, including several probiotic preparations. As he explained to me, “During the two years of my illness, despite my ongoing search for treatment, I was never granted even one day of reprieve from the symptoms of Crohn’s Disease. The excessive amounts of emotional, physical, and mental distress caused me to want to die. All I could do was pray to a compassionate God that the cure for Crohn’s disease would someday be found. “And then,” he added with a smile, “it happened!””

Thank you, LBB. I recall taking a probiotic a couple years ago, very expen$ive so I had to stop. I remember that I had to keep it refrigerated. I’m sure amazon has a record of that purchase.

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

And, Lord, we pray for help for the people of Texas who are caught in the flooding.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen

So, we all know the angelic Jackie Evancho from her performance at the inauguration, and I am sure for a lot of us, we know her from from AGT, as well. I was on YouTube listening to some music because I love listening to her rendition of Pie Jesu, then I clicked on to ABC’s clip of the inauguration. I was dismayed at the quality of the recording and the horrible comments for her performance 😦 Then I viewed a video from a couple of weeks ago–again from ABC–doing a follow-up of the post inauguration reaction. ABC is Sickening. They had to have manipulated her recording of the inauguration, because it is much more terrible than any others; in fact the others are pristine!! All I could think was: this poor sweet child seems so stressed because she has taken the brunt of psycho anti-Americans and coping with her “activist,” transgender brother 🙄 Or sister… or whatever. The interview saddened me further because I learned that her family has partnered with TLC for a reality series… sigh. Can we all imagine how and where this is probably going to end up 😦 I got the sense from this most recent interview, that Jackie is on a super crazy rollercoaster just trying to hang on and do the “right,” things. I honestly feel bad for what seems like an insane situation, whereby all her fame has gone to her sister’s and parents head. As Jackie says in the video: her “…career is like the family business…” so she has to be “careful,” and say the “right,” things… Her amazing gift from God is so special, but not as special as she is to Him. So, I think us Treepers should say a little prayer for Jackie, and her family, to help guide them to find wisdom and peace.
