History Repeats

In 1968 Michigan Governor George Romney tried to run for the presidency, he failed miserably.  He was gaffe prone, disjointed, disconnected from the common man and came across as a generally bumbling political oddity; prompting Ohio Governor Jim Rhodes to say:

…”Watching George Romney run for the presidency was like watching a duck try to make love to a football”…

Later, George Romney went on to try and undermine the insurgent “common sense” conservative candidacy of Ronald Reagan.

Today, George Romney’s son, Mitt Romney, another failed presidential candidate, an almost identical  duck, tries to undermine the insurgent candidacy of Donald Trump.

There is a profound amount of irony, and hypocrisy, found in the words of the younger duck today as he referenced 1964 and wise words from Ronald Reagan; a man his father directly opposed.  Obviously someone forgot to tell Mitt, his words represented that football.

Mitt Romney actually used a quote from John Adams when he quacked:

“Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy, yet, that did not commit suicide.”

Duck Romney then says he believes that we have avoided these “dire predictions” because we have been “blessed” with “great presidents“, “men of character” and because “we’re blessed with a great people.”

The Duck obviously does not comprehend that Mr. John Adams was not talking about the United States of America, he was specifically talking about what we SHOULD NOT become.   Our founders viewed the structure of democratic governance as “mob rule”, a specific threat to be avoided at all costs.

Mr. John Adams and those around him even shared the opinion that a Monarchy was preferred to a Democracy, specifically because at least a monarch might protect the rights of the minority – a pure Democracy never would.

Every one of our founders eventually agreed the risks of a national form of governance via pure democracy were too great, and so John Adams and the founders gave us a constitutional republic.

The U.S. has avoided these “dire predictions” in large measure because many of us, unlike Duck Romney, have not forgotten this.
