Monday Open Thread – February 15th

Tomb of the Unknown ChristmasOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

  2. Ha ha Hshahaha The open thread. Here we go.

Freezing temps; not slowing them down.

    • Janie M. says:

There were some rumblings about recalling him. But reading over at the Chi. Trib. a few weeks ago, the potential replacements (most known to me since I live in the state and have since 1972) discussed didn’t impress me. And what is it with all these Dem. politicians making Cuba their vacation hot spot? Emanuel included.

    • czarowniczy says:

All things considered maybe Rahm can get the ‘mayor’ slot in the Palestinian Territories when Chicago’s done with him.

    • Sandra says:

Look at all of the resources sucked up by this criminal activity. Those who were shot are taken to the emergency room. Very expensive. Some require extra procedures like scans, surgeries, transfusions, perhaps ICU stays. The police have to investigate the shootings. If the perpetrators are caught, they are jailed, brought to court, tried or given plea deals, and many move on to prison. All of this is paid for by taxpayers.

The Cook County jail complex is like a small city. They have an average population of 9000 inmates. The Cook County Sheriff web site says they process 100,000 people per year. They have a large bus fleet to transport inmates to courts every weekday. Imagine the products going in (food, toilet paper, personal products, clothing) and the waste coming out. Imagine the number of people working in that facility. All paid for by taxpayers.

I am in Chicago and I voted and pushed my friends to vote for Rham. The reason being, was his opponent, Chuy Garcia, was like a Latino version of Bernie Sanders. Rham is not great, but I think he is probably better than Daley and there is no alternative. At the least, he has fiscal sense and trying to fix the budget by pushing back on the crazy unions. Socially, I dislike him.

Hiring Gerry McCarthey was his biggest mistake. That is when the CPD was weakened. Its been in decline ever since and we may never turn it around due to the political climate.

I understand from the outside, the City looks like a clown is running it, but honestly, there is no viable alternative for the time being.

If you’ve ever made the LA/Austin run on I-10 and stopped in Ft. Stockton, you know exactly the place Michael is singing about. That all-night dinner is exactly as he describes. It’s right in the middle of town on the south side of I-10. I wonder if ‘Catus Jack is still there?

    • Garrison Hall says:

If you like this, click on the horse link that appears at the end of the song for Michael Murphy’s famous “Wildfire”. Great song.

      • Tonawanda says:

I took your advice and watched/listened to Wildfire while reading the lyrics on another site. TY for the morning connection to a beautifully evocative song!

    • tampa2 says:

Wonderful songwriter. All anyone remembers is ” Wildfire”, but one of my favorites was “Carolina in the Pines”!

      • Janie M. says:

I like Michael Murphey and “Wildfire” but my all time fave is George Strait’s “Amarillo by Morning. <3 And I have a very soft spot for Dwight Yoakam’s “Thousand Miles from Nowhere.” Saw him in concert with my BFF and seriously, when Dwight swivels his hips, the chickies scream.

        • susiepuma says:

Oh yeah….Dwight Yoakam…….he could sing anything to me and I would be happy…… I especially like his “You’re the One”……………………

          • Janie M. says:

“Ain’t That Lonely Yet” “She Wore Red Dresses”and his version of “Suspicious Minds”… so many excellent songs. I have 3 of his older CD’s. Love him. Decent actor too – “Sling Blade”

      • czarowniczy says:

ANYTHING done by Waylon, Hank or Hank Jr – preferably with a side of sour mash

        • Janie M. says:

Waylon and Willie’s duet, “Good Hearted Woman” is outstanding but whenever I think of Waylon, “Luchenbach,Texas” always comes to mind. My dad was a big Hank fan and played Hank’s records on his stereo (remember those huge wooden monstrosities?). That takes me back decades. Time flies.

I don’t know how to post a photo. But there is a photo going around of Obama shaking the hand of the man who owned the ranch Scalia was at.

The story with it is that he has previously been honored in a ceremony by Obama. This man john Poindexter was the one who called in scalia’s death and got him declared dead without medical exam.

    Nope. Nothing to see here.

‘ISIS Gets Syrian Air Defense System’
Missile warheads likely to be used in car bombs

    • JohnP says:

      Syria is getting serious.

      Manbij –
After a month of Russian air strikes on the ISIS front in Manbij, it was the coalition that bombed and strafed yesterday. The attacks included two A-10 Warthogs. The Free Syrian Army (FSA/YPG) is now just 6km from the town ISIS calls Little London because of all the foreign fighters it has there.

      Raqqah –
The Syrian Army has opened a new front on Raqqah’s front door.
The Syrian Arab Army’s 555th Brigade of the 4th Mechanized Division – in close coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF), Liwaa Suqour Al-Sahra (Desert Hawks Brigade), Fouj Al-Joulan (Golani Regiment), and the pro-government Palestinian militia “Liwaa Al-Quds) – imposed full control over several hills surrounding the imperative village of Zakiyah along the Salamiyah-Raqqa Road.

      • czarowniczy says:

Yup, Ruskie 1st-line fighters flying cover for their bombers attacking Turk-supported anti-Assad forces based close to Turkey; Russia hinting it may establish Kurd-based provinces along the Syrian/Turkish border and may renew the US ‘safe zone’ for Kurds in Iraq.
Also, the US is BSing the folks about ISIS being knocked back on its heels when it may be able to retain control of Mosol through the end of this year. Meantime there’s still a steady supply of foreign fighters filtering in and there’s talk about ISIS even rejoining with al Qaeda to consolidate combat/combat support forces and ratchet up the action all around.

By the way, HAPPY PRESIDENTS’ DAY — more specifically, for those who remember: Happy Lincon’s Birthday and Happy Washington’s Birthday (two separate holidays).

    • Josh says:

“Four U.S. Presidents were born in February. Two died in office. The other two served two full terms.

George Washington’s birthday was February 11, 1731, but when the Gregorian Calendar replaced the Julian Calendar in the West, eleven days were added, and for those whose birthdays were between January 1 and March 25, one year was added. That’s why we now regard his birthday as February 22, 1732. However, Washington always celebrated his birthday on February 11, no matter what calendar was in use. Although he served two full terms, he actually served fewer days than all his two-term successors. That’s because he was not sworn in until April 30, 1789. His term was supposed to start on March 4, but the Electoral votes were not counted until April 6.

William Henry Harrison was the oldest person elected President before Reagan. He gave the longest inaugural address and served the fewest days. Like Washington, he was a general in the army. His was born February 9, 1773 and died April 4, 1841. Forty-eight years later his grandson became the 23rd U.S. President.

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, the same day as Charles Darwin. His parents were Baptists, but Lincoln never formally joined any church. As an adult Lincoln mostly attended Presbyterian churches. He once said: “I do not think I could myself, be brought to support a man for office, whom I knew to be an open enemy of, and scoffer at, religion.”

Ronald Reagan was born February 6, 1911. In his 1985 State of the Union Address he said: “Freedom is not the sole prerogative of a chosen few; it is the universal right of all God’s children… Victories against poverty are greatest and peace most secure where people live by laws that insure free press, free speech, and freedom to worship, vote, and create wealth.”

Just a little trivia is all. I understand that this day is in honor of all POTUS’s.

  24. Sandra says:

The BGI fully intends to bankrupt Ferguson. The Ferguson City Council determined that it could not afford to pay for the overhaul of its Police Department and courts as required by its agreement with the federal government, an agreement made under the threat of being sued. So the City Council decided to adopt the agreement but with a few changes. Loretta Lynch was displeased so her BGI Justice Department sued Ferguson the next day. She said the people of Ferguson should not have to wait any longer for “their city to adopt an agreement that would protect their rights and keep them safe.” She doesn’t care about cost. She’s probably never had to make a budget in her entire life. I hope all of the remaining white people move out of Ferguson. Vacate. You have lost the war.

The next President can appoint a different AG, right? The BGI must be eradicated from the Justice Department.

    • Sandra says:

Feb 12: U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch spent time with students in Miami-Dade Friday morning to discuss trust and the relationships between young people and the police. The conversation was part of a two-day stop in South Florida for the nation’s top cop. Lynch is making several stops across the nation to discuss policing issues and ways of building trust and cooperation between law enforcement and local citizens. Lynch met with students at Miami’s Booker T. Washington High School along with local law enforcement officials. After that, she held a roundtable on policing at Miami-Dade College.

I think Lynch is worse than Holder. She’s on a one-woman mission to destroy race relations and ensure that a generations of black youth disrespect and fight the police.

    • Janie M. says:

Sandra, I always felt sorry for the decent citizens of Ferguson and suspect they would have left if they could when the rioting/looting/arson started but probably couldn’t due to crashing property values (like anyone would buy a home there even if it was dirt cheap) and/or a lack of funds.

  30. czarowniczy says:

A week before Mardi Gras a rather weird group of black nationalist squatters named the Washitah Nation kicked in the door of a house for sale in a New Orleans neighborhood. They changed the locks and, when the owner of the house called the police, the squatters claimed they owned the house. After the owner presented a deed and tax papers showing he owned the property the squatters claimed that through some weird and convoluted train of BS they actually owned the land. The police left, saying it was a civil matter.
Now the homeowner has to go through the entire civil court process of proving that he owns the land and then get an eviction process through the court. It could conceivably be months before the process is over (already be nearly a month) and it’s going to cost him a bundle, not counting what it will take to repair any damages. Yes, he could sue (back to civil court on that) but you know e squatters don’t have squat.
The city’s been hit with a wave of squatters and those with these ‘pulled out of their nether eye’ legal claims to ownership are growing in numbers. Jeepers, there are so many of them in the city, wonder why they don’t try squatting waaaaaay out here on our farms???
