A recent article in U.S. News and World Report highlights a profound republican party irony and simultaneous hypocrisy.

On the heels of a devastating defeat of John McCain 2008, and immediately following the disastrous defeat of Mitt Romney in 2012, the power-structures within the Republican party decided to do a complete “GOP Autopsy” and figure out what they could do to start winning presidential elections again. They called it “The Growth and Opportunity Project”.

The officials (co-chairs) in charge of conducting the autopsy were: Ari Fleischer, a former press secretary to President George W. Bush; Henry Barbour, an RNC member from Mississippi; Zori Fonalledas, an RNC member from Puerto Rico; Glenn McCall, an RNC member from South Carolina; and Sally Bradshaw, a political strategist from Florida.

You would think their resulting 2013  100 page report with recommendations like:

♦ “We need to do a better job connecting people to our policies. We are the Party of private-sector economic growth because that is the best way to create jobs and opportunity.”

♦ “The Republican Party needs to stop talking to itself. We have become expert in how to provide ideological reinforcement to like-minded people, but devastatingly we have lost the ability to be persuasive with, or welcoming to, those who do not agree with us on every issue.”

…would lead to a gleeful embrace of Donald J Trump as the leading Republican nominee for President; because Trump is the ONLY candidate actually bringing in new GOP voters to the republican tent. Well, that would be IF you believed they actually wanted to “connect people to their policies“, or actually be “welcoming to those who don’t agree with them“.

Consider recently:

US News […]  Nearly 20 percent of likely Democratic voters say they’d cross sides and vote for Trump, while a small number, or 14 percent, of Republicans claim they’d vote for Clinton. When those groups were further broken down, a far higher percentage of the crossover Democrats contend they are “100 percent sure” of switching than the Republicans.  (link)

Yet, if you look at how the exact same GOPe Co-Chairs are talking about Donald Trump right now you might find yourself puzzled.

Candidate Donald Trump is doing exactly what the Republican Party Autopsy said needed to be done.  Trump is bringing in massive amounts of conservative-leaning independents, and conservative-leaning Democrats.   Exactly the goal of the Growth and Opportunity Project.

Yet, what do those Co-Chairs and Establishment Party Types say now?    They protest that the new patriotic, America-first Trump coalition, the vulgarians, are not the “right type” of Republican for their party.

Think about that.

Because it’s about time Donald Trump starts rubbing their noses in their own recommendations:
