Prayers for this officer and family ! As well as all his fellow officers now working to apprehend the perp. Their lives are also at risk ! And these incidents have consequences for all of us. At the very least we have to behave “very circumspectly” in any traffic stop we might be engaged in and do our best to put the officer(s) at ease !

FWIW, I’ve good intel one of the best things you can do in a traffic stop is to toss your keys on the dash in plain sight but out of easy reach. Turning on your vehicle interior lights in a night stop is also reported as a good thing ! OTOH, DON’T unlock doors or open windows – other than driver’s- and that not more than 3-4 ” . (Not all cops are “good guys”, so denying them opportunity to claim “cross-draft smell” or other “PC” excuses is just good sense. So is calling 911 to report the stop, its location and staying on line during the stop.

I would leave the keys in the ignition, but turn the engine off. Lower driver’s side window, and place hands on top of the steering wheel, palms up. If you have a CCW, advise the officer of same and the location of the weapon. If your license is in your rear pocket or in your purse advise the officer of its location and await instructions on when to retrieve it. In short let the officer know that he is in charge and that you are not a threat.

Several people I know that have been stopped for minor traffic violations followed my instructions, were thanked for their actions and sent on their way without a ticket.

Calling 911 to report the stop is not a bad idea, but most of the time the officer will have approached the car before you can make the call. If it is an unmarked car and the driver is not in uniform, flash your lights to acknowledge the officer’s instructions, activate you flashers and try to pull over at a place where there are other people. If there isn’t such a location in the immediate vicinity, place that call to 911 and have them confirm the unmarked car that is trying to stop you is in deed a police vehicle.

If you kept the officer waiting while you confirmed his identity, follow the above instructions, apologize and explain that you wished to confirm he was a police officer. As long as you are civil about it and explain your actions most officer will understand and it will not be an issue.

        Take Care

I was taught that if you have a CCW hand it to the officer along with your license. If it is not handy, then certainly tell the officer of its existence.

Try keeping those hands firmly fixed on top of the steering wheel where the approaching officer can see them, do not try to exit the vehicle before the officer directs you to, do not drop that right (or left, for that matter) shoulder as the officer approaches nor reach for anything in the glove box – just sit still with your hands in plain sight. Officer sees you reaching in the direction of the ignition and s/he’s not sure what you’re reaching for. At any point where the officer sees you make any move that causes even a small alarm bell to go off the entire mood of the stop starts to change. Let the officer direct the stop from the time s/he exits the vehicle to the time s/he says ‘have a nice day’ and watches you drive off.
Each officer will have his/her own way to approach on a traffic stop. I found it best when the person stopped just sits there with hands in plain sight (they are the threat) and waited for direction. In the older days a traffic stop was nowhere near as sketchy an act as it is now and officers are far more on-alert now. You may know your intentions but the officer doesn’t.

And I’m betting you can understand why they are so nervous. We lost officers BEFORE the POtuS declared an open season/no bag limit on them. The stopee has full control over which way the situation will go right up until the officer can get close enough to get visual confirmation of what’s going on.

Most LEA are not the ones they like to portray in the movies/TV series they binge-watch in the WH. When we got out of a car in NOLA on any kind of a stop we had no idea who/what we were about to run into. We had the usual folks who were pissed that WE stoped THEM when WE should be out arresting THEM but never once a adrenaline-sodden moment. Then you see a case like the pone I posted where deep in the heart of rural East Nowhere the cops just pull over the wrong guy and it goes south in one heartbeat. It never hurts to act civilized and generally gets the whole thing over with in a painless manner.

Saw a post on a mariner’s forum that I occasionally follow that really makes me worry a little bit. The poster is claiming that Puerto Ricans can vote in US elections if they are in Florida (doesn’t say anything about residency), & that they may have the power to influence who gets Florida’s electoral votes. (Thread, itself, is about Puerto Rico seeking an exemption from the Jones Act on the grounds that the country is so distressed, financially.)
Can anyone address the veracity of this? Florida freaks me out because of the RNC’s shenanigans, as it is. I wouldn’t put it past them to ship a bunch of people in to throw the primary for Jeb or Rube. Way easier than what they did to McDaniel & no one would ever even think of it.

There is a line between corrupt government employee and leaders keeping secrets for personal gain, and governments keeping secrets for the greater good. One tends to take advantage of the other.

Occassionally, we are reminded that not telling us everything is a good thing. Here is a great example, and one that directly kept our own citizen soldiers safe for years. And why the Russians may not want to tangle with our combat aircraft.

    We know their secrets.

    http://www.businessinsider.com/us-and-russia-planes-in-syria-2015-10?utm_source=trove&utm_medium=referral

“…In the early and mid-1980s, Tolkachev, who was the head of a Soviet weapons-research laboratory, gave the CIA specifications for the next decade’s worth of Soviet combat-aircraft radar systems.

“The amazing thing is that Tolkachov was bringing us not only what was happening now but what would be happening 10 years from now,” Hoffman told Business Insider in an interview earlier this year.

Tolkachev allowed US military planners to peer into the future of Soviet aircraft capabilities.

Since the Soviet Union was the US’ primary conventional foe, that information led the US to build specific counter-capabilities into its own aircraft — ways of evading advanced Soviet aircraft radar or of exploiting gaps in radar coverage.

“This intelligence went right into electronics that were deployed, but never mentioned in anyone’s National Intelligence Estimate,” Hoffman explained to Business Insider.

This technological and intelligence edge is one of the reasons for the US’ aerial superiority over Soviet-built combat aircraft since the fall of the Soviet Union.

During the 1991 Gulf War, while in “direct aerial combat over Iraq, the US Air Force downed every Soviet-built tactical fighter that it confronted,” Hoffman writes, even though they were being flown by pilots from what was then one of the most formidable militaries in the Middle East at the time. …”

This is good spying by the boys and girls at Langley. Sadly, politics gets in the way of them doing the cool things they want to do.

Which should doubly infuriate you today when you hear HRC use the need for secrecy to cover her corrupt efforts. I hope Gowdy does his job.

“During the 1991 Gulf War, while in “direct aerial combat over Iraq, the US Air Force downed every Soviet-built tactical fighter that it confronted,” True, but a Navy pilot, LTC Scott Speicher, was hit and killed and an AF F-111 was hit by an Iraqi AA missile but managed to make it back to base.
The US had the AWACS that found and fixed the Iraqi aircraft early on after takeoff allowing the US pilots to plan their engagement while the Iraqis were still trying to get a fix on teh US aircraft. Also, saying the Iraqi pilots were one of the most formidable isn’t all that great of a compliment all considered, and let’s also not forget how many 1st line Iraqi fighters were flown to Iran or buried in the Iraqi desert to escape destruction.
My favorite was the AF F-15 that destroyed an Iraqi helicopter IN THE AIR by hitting it with a laser-guided 500-pound iron bomb. That’s one to write home to momma and the kids about.
