Toni Morrison“People keep saying, ‘We need to have a conversation about race.  This is the conversation”.
“I want to see a cop shoot a white unarmed teenager in the back, and I want to see a white man convicted for raping a black woman. Then when you ask me, ‘Is it over?’, I will say yes.”

Today in Mississippi –  A man is dead after an early morning altercation with deputies, according to Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie.
Steven G. Davenport, 43, a white male, was pronounced dead at a local hospital this morning, Sollie said.
Deputies received a call of a disturbance around 3 a.m. between two individuals at a residence. When deputies arrived on scene, they attempted to resolve the situation, the sheriff said.
Davenport became combative, while the other subject did not engage with deputies. The two deputies and Davenport struggled “for some length,” Sollie said. During the fight, one deputy deployed a taser, which had no impact on Davenport. Two other deputies came as backup as well and helped to subdue Davenport.
He deteriorated to the point of unresponsive,” Sollie said, adding that no firearms were used in the altercation.
An emergency medical crew transported Davenport to a local hospital where he was treated, but ultimately died.
The two original deputies were also taken to the hospital where they were treated for injuries.
Sollie said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has been called in to conduct a routine probe into the death. Data from all four deputies’ body cameras has been submitted to MBI. One of them became nonfunctional during the fight, Sollie said, but the other three continued to work.  (read more)
