Grouchy Boehner – Tells Senate Democrats “Get Off Your Ass”….

BoehnerWASHINGTON DC – House Speaker John Boehner called on Senate Democrats on Wednesday to “get off their ass” and take up a $40 billion Homeland Security funding measure before a Feb. 27 deadline.

The House-passed measure has been stalled in the Senate thanks to a Democratic filibuster.

On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said the gridlock means it is now “up to the House” to determine what to do next.

Boehner signaled Wednesday he disagrees with McConnell.

“I love Mitch,” Boehner bantered with reporters after a closed-door meeting with GOP rank and file. “He has a tough job to do, and so do I.”

When reporters repeatedly asked Boehner what the next steps will be on passing a DHS measure, he said, “Why don’t you go over and ask Senate Democrats when they are going to get off their ass and do something? The House has done its job.”

Democrats are unanimously opposed to the bill because it contains language that would curb President Obama’s use of executive authority to allow millions of illegal immigrants to obtain work permits and some federal benefits. Democrats said they will only approve the legislation if the GOP strips out the immigration provisions. (read more)

    2 things:

    1) I love the “…tell them to get off their asses…..” sound bite
    2) unfortunately that is all it is, a sound bite.
Boehner has now had his ‘get tough’ moment, that moment will be shown on the 6 o’clock news, and Johnny can now go back to his main priority – his (golf) handicap.

    Nothing will change.

No way a bill containing that language gets through the filthy Dem firewall known as the U.S. Senate.

I thought funding legislation only required a simple majority to pass. The Republicans have a simple majority in the Senate.

Makes one suspect some Republicans are voting Democrat. I hope they have to eat breakfast every morning with Obie in Hell’s kitchen on the lowest level.

Hey didn’t the Dems vote in the Nuclear option a little while ago deciding that it only took 51 votes to break a filibuster?

We should give credit where credit is due. Boehner did the right thing here, it is McConnell and the other wishy-washy Senators that will not at least fight the fight on this one, so lets not blame Boehner for this. The other point I have is the fact that the DHS funding bill is a budget bill and as such it can be passed using reconciliation which does not need 60 votes it can pass with a 51 vote majority. Why doesn’t McConnell use reconciliation on this one. I mean Harry Reid was willing to use reconciliation to pass a non-budget bill called Obamacare which was totally against Senate rules, but of course the Dems purpose when they have the majority is to advance their progressive agenda, whereas McConnell’s purpose is to keep comity between the parties, his purpose is certainly not to advance an ideological agenda because he believes in no agenda except keeping his own power.
