Tomb of the Unknown ChristmasOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen โ€

Local Houston radio talk show czar Michael Berry (whose wife is the sitting Texas Secretary of State), made a great point today. He says that if the MSM is going to refer to Mohammad as the “prophet Mohammad”, then they need start referring to Jesus as “Jesus Christ, Son of God and Savior of Mankind”, or as “Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”.

His point was Muslims consider him the Prophet Mohammad, so if you mention Jesus, then you must refer to him in the same manner as His believers.

I’d never considered that before. Yes, language is hijacked in so many subtle ways!!!

I don’t watch FoxNews, so I don’t know what they say. I don’t know what knowledge you have of the Bible, so I will throw a bit of info out there for any readers who don’t know exactly what is meant by “The Lord’s Prayer.”

The Lord’s Prayer is a specific, set prayer (well, except for the disagreement about whether the ending belongs as part of it or not). Across Christians and denominations, there are some variations in ideas about what is correct, etc., but a general idea is that, after Jesus redeemed our sins by his sacrifice, we no longer require intermediaries (priests) to redeem us/absolve our sins for us (this was a purpose of some rituals form Leviticus). We cannot be in company, so to speak, with God, who is perfect, if we are stained from sin. Sin (in my view; views differ) is not so much whether you perform some act or not as ordered, BUT is not behaving by God’s guidance, which should be in your heart if you listen to God, love God, and strive to live accordingly.

After Jesus’ sacrifice, we who accept this gift of redemption no longer need to be cleaned of the stain of our sin by animal sacrifices in place of our own blood; Jesus’ blood suffices.

So, we no longer have an intermediary between each of us and God.

So, we can pray in a manner that is simply each of us talking to God. Praise, gratitude, requests, etc. There are no standard, structured prayers – you pray however you want, as long as it is in a certain attitude.

Jesus himself provided guidance about how to pray: not to be showy, etc. He gave, in Matthew Ch 6, the only standard-prayer instruction he gave anywhere. He said, “pray like this:…” and said the Lord’s Prayer.

Thus, this is the ONLY standard prayer suggested in Christianity. Otherwise, you just come up with your own words when you pray. We do have direction on how often to pray – pretty much unceasingly – keep God in your mind as you go through all things in life.

So, The Lord’s Prayer is that one prayer, the only specific prayer suggested for us Christians. however, if you NEVER say this prayer, you can still be a Christian and can still get to Heaven; there is very little ritual or standard practice in Christianity; it is a relationship with God, your Father, not a religion.

When I don’t quite have my own prayer in mind, I get myself warmed up with the Lord’s Prayer. I switch words around to keep form getting “rote.” I might say “sustenance” in stead of “daily bread,” etc. Jesus himself was heavily anti-ritual and anti-rote-prayer.

Really nice post. I don’t disagree at all.

My question was about the term “the Our Father.” I didn’t know if it referred to the Lord’s Prayer or to something else. There are a lot of terms used by Catholics that I am not familiar with and I thought that might be the source.

            I was raised Catholic.
Indeed, they call the Lord’s Prayer the “Our Father”.
Ever heard of a “Hail Mary” pass in a football game? A “Hail Mary” is also a set prayer in the Catholic church. It goes:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Note that the first part is taken from Luke 1:28.

Both prayers take their names from their first words.

After confessing your sins to a priest, he would tell you to say a number of Our Fathers and Hail Marys as penance for your sins.

Indeed a good post. Makes me think of Brother Lawrence’s little gem, “The Practice of the Presence of God”.
For me, sin is when we say by our actions, “not Thy will be done, but My will be done”, which is what Eve did.
Anyone who has raised children know that they are born with that attitude, and it starts manifesting about the age of two.
In the garden of Gethsemane, part of Jesus’ prayer was, “yet, not My will be done, but Thy will be done.”
What is God’s will? Jesus’ answer when asked what was the greatest commandment: Love God, and the second is to love one another.
Satan destroyed Eve’s love for God by lying about Him.
Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” Since He loves us, His commandments are good; He’s not being petty or mean.

Interesting Hannity last night. Franklin Graham was on his panel and they were all discussing Islam. Franklin Graham looks straight at the camera and starts witnessing to muslims everywhere to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. He told them they didn’t have to tell family members but could keep it to themselves and they would not be killed for becoming Christians. I have always thought you told others you were Christians. If they did they would be killed. He was trying to tell them how to have eternal life in heaven.

Just a brief note…today is the sentencing of the first of many involved in the Alabama Family sexual abuse case. Wendy Wood Holland and William Brownlee are scheduled to be sentenced at 9:00 AM CST in Bay Minette, AL. If you are unfamiliar with the case…
    http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2014/12/alabama_woman_convicted_in_chi.html
What makes this case so horrific is that the abuse started when some of the children were months old and has been ongoing for generations.

This case is also tied to the disappearance and likely murder of Brittney Wood, who was one of the victims and was likely going to testify against the others.

    http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/jobless-claims-rise-to-316000/article/2558692#.VLfFuYiDn-0.facebook

First-time claims for unemployment benefits rose to 316,000 for the week ending Jan. 10, the Department of Labor reported Thursday.

That number, which was adjusted for seasonal variation, was well above the sub-300,000 mark that investors expected, and a steep increase from last week’s revised 297,000.

To put our unemployment rate into perspective – supposedly now at 5.6% – you should also look at the labor force participation rate. In January, 2009, the labor participation rate was 65.7%, and in December, 2014, it was 62.7%.

Of note is not one of the bill’s sponsors is a Republican or Independent. The old selectively applied canard that there’s this huge wage gap between Federal employees and private sector workers and that Federal employees are leaving Federal service for the private sector in droves is AGIAN being used as a basis. Now I started Federal employment in 1965 and it was being used THEN and every years since then to justify the call for more money.
Ahhhhhh. would that only be the case but how many productive private sector agencies are dying to vacuum up herds of programmers, accountants or other Federal ‘specialists’ who have no formal education beyond high school (if that) and some in-house Skinnerian training?

Guess Sharpton needs more more to not pay taxes on.
Al Sharpton Calls For Emergency Meeting To Address ‘Appalling’ All-White Oscar Nominees
AP/John Minchillo The Rev. Al Sharpton. The Rev. Al Sharpton was left fuming mad after the Oscars revealed its all-white list of nominees for this year’s Oscar awards on Thursday.

“The movie industry is like the Rocky Mountains, the higher you get, the whiter it gets,” Sharpton quipped in a statement released later in the afternoon.

Sharpton, a critic of the lack of diversity in Hollywood, also announced he was holding an “emergency meeting” next week to address the issue.

“I have called an emergency meeting early next week in Hollywood with the task force to discuss possible action around the Academy Awards,” he said.

The prestigious awards ceremony was widely criticized after its nominees for best actor, best actress, and best director were all white. In the past two decades this has happened only one other time, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sharpton praised the Oscars for nominating the civil-rights film “Selma” for best picture, but said it was “ironic” because the film is based on Dr. Martin Luther King’s marches.

Said Sharpton: “The lack of diversity in today’s Oscar nominations is appalling and while it is good that Selma was nominated for ‘Best Picture,’ it’s ironic that they nominated a story about the racial shutout around voting while there is a racial shutout around the Oscar nominations. With all of the talent in Selma and other Black movies this year, it is hard to believe that we have less diversity in the nominations today than in recent history.”

It isn’t enough that these blacktivists films were funded and made, and available to anyone who is interested in that genre to see – oh noes – we all must prostrate ourselves and not only spend our money and our irreplacable time to see them, but wax poetic about how important and meaningful and “impactful” they are and laud them with “awards” and “recognition”.

Why don’t they start a black equivalent of the Oscars? It’s not like they’re not for “separate but equal” in a wide variety of other things when it is seen as advantageous to them.
