Irony Alert – ‘Journal News’ hires armed security guards

HatTip Ctdar (via Politico)  The Journal News of West Nyack, N.Y., has hired armed security guards to defend its offices after receiving a torrent of phone calls and emails responding to the paper’s publication of the names and addresses of area residents with pistol permits.

RGA Investigations, a private security company, “is doing private security at on location at the Journal News as a result of the negative response to the article,” according to a police report first obtained by the Rockland County Times (Nanuet, N.Y.) and shared with POLITICO. The guards “are armed and will be on site during business hours through at least January 2, 2013.”

Last month, in the wake of last month’s elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., the Gannett-owned Journal News published interactive maps showing the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in New York’s Westchester and Rockland counties. Conservatives and gun rights advocates publicly protested the paper’s move; on Monday, the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association called for a nationwide boycott of the paper’s advertisers, calling it a “wanton act” that “has put in harm’s way tens of thousands of lawful license holders.”

According to the Clarkstown Police report, filed today, Journal News editor Caryn McBride had “previously reported a large amount of negative correspondence in response to the media outlet’s publication of local gun permit holders.” McBride shared one email with the police officer from “an unknown subject who wondered what McBride would get in her email now.” The officer told McBride the email did not constitute an offense.

The Rockland County Times, a Journal News competitor, led its exclusive report citing the juxtaposition of targeting gun ownership while hiring armed guards.

“Guns are good for the goose but NOT for the gander,” Dylan Skriloff, the Rockland County Times’ associate publisher & editor-in-chief wrote.  (article)

As I said in some other forums…I hope some of the people they posted were the armed security guards they would probably end up hiring…I would how the Security guards take to working for people who post these types of addresses…

  2. gretchenone says:

And the poor guards are probably being paid about $12-15 an hour. I wonder how willing they would be to defend those idiots at the Journal News if push comes to shove.

  3. The embarrassment I feel for them is almost unbearable to me. How do they handle it?

  4. Paige Cohen says:

Putnam County Clerk turned down the Urinal News
Putnam County Clerk Dennis Sant said he would defy a request for information about pistol permit holders from the White Plains, N.Y.-based Journal News, which has come under criticism for publishing thousands of such identities already.

“There is the rule of law, and there is right and wrong and the Journal News is clearly wrong,” Sant said in a statement. “I could not live with myself if one Putnam pistol permit holder was put in harm’s way, for the sole purpose of selling newspapers.”

What is wrong with that situation ……. They post peoples names and addresses for having permits for weapons with no regard for there safety , then they turn around and ask those same people with weapons to protect there sorry butts. They wont someone to do what they are not willing to do .

The funny thing is that they are not under threat. They carried the “threats” to the police and they were not threats but disapproval of what they had done. It is the typical Proglodyte reaction that if you disagree or disapprove of them you are evil, ignorant and should be jailed or worse. They are fanatic, intolerant, self righteous authoritarians.

      • Sha says:

boutis: It is always easy for people to judge someone until they have to walk in there shoes. Have they even ask one of the people who they posted there information if they have had any problems since it was posted…. of course not . Do they care more about the money they make off of the sales of papers than the lives they put in danger…. I think they do. Karma is something and they will find out the hard way.

Well, they are clearly helping to prove that the only way to protect yourself from an armed individual intent on causing you harm is to arm yourself, or hire armed men willing to face violence on your behalf. If they followed their printed editorials, they should have stuck with gun free zone stickers, metal detectors and panic buttons. That should give the liberal mind sufficient comfort.

    • myopiafree says:

This is history repeating itself – al la – Germany 1923 to 1933 – when the liberals voted to “protect themselves” from people having guns. The liberal-democrats were profoundly successful. The ran good stories in their newspapers – that is, until some NAZI thugs took displeasure from some of the publications. The threw bricks through the glass, came in a busted the presses. But the “liberals” had NO ONE TO CALL TO “PROTECT” THEM – ANY MORE. Everyone was disarmed. Yes, the “liberals” successfully shot themselves in the foot – with dictator ship to follow. Who was to blame??

    • John McLachlan says:

Presumably, the premises of the Journal News was a “gun-free Zone”, where all the staff considered that “guns do not make you safer”, which was the editorial policy of the newspaper and its opinion writers.
Does the sudden urge of these same propagandists to be provided with protection by persons armed with guns represent a change in their beliefs, a rejection of their presumably sincerely held, but now reconsidered opinions that people do not need guns for their protection?
Is their cognitive dissonance so great that they cannot appreciate that their employment of guards armed with guns invalidates their assertion that guns are not necessary for protection from violent crime?
Alternatively, perhaps there is no cognitive dissonance on their part. Perhaps they have always known, privately, that guns are usefull tools for personal protection from attack by violent criminals, despite this being misrepresented in their published articles.
If it were indeed the case that their was no cognitive dissonance on the part of the editorial staff of the newpaper, then their published articles were not merely naively incorrect, but were cynically and deliberately dishonest.
Why would newspaper journalists and editors believe that it was necessary to deceive their readers by lying to them and misrepresenting what they knew of the world which they reported?

      • myopiafree says:

They have a problem – why not call the police. Or do they feel the need to “protect themselves” – by invoking the “right to keep and bear arms”. Or, are they just a buch of profound LIBERAL-HYPOCRITES??
