(Dr. Krop High School – 2007) A student was arrested for possession of marijuana in the butterfly garden in November, during second lunch. [Dr. Krop High School Resource] Officer Darryl Dunn was informed by Crime Watch students and arrested him immediately.

This was the eighth case of student arrests for drug possession this year; which, according to Dunn, is a low number compared to other years.

“Last year around this time, I had about 15 to 20 arrests,” he said.

Since the case is still open, no information regarding it can be released; however, it is known that the student is still under arrest and will be sent to court.

Dunn believes that crime committers can only be arrested and penalized for their crimes if they are reported by other students.

“They don’t do it in front of me, they don’t do it in front of the administration either,” Dunn said. “Who creates these rules of you being a snitch, except those who do the wrong thing?”

According to prosecutor Jonah Dickstein of the state attorney’s office, if a student is arrested for possession of drugs, in most cases, the Juvenile Justice Department evaluates the student’s grades, extracurricular activities and problems he or she may have at home.

They come to the judge, the defense attorney and the prosecutor to explain the case.

It is then decided how many community service hours the student must complete. The student meets with the Juvenile Justice after completing the terms in order to drop the charges.

However, if the student is caught with plenty of drugs, not just for personal use, but to sell, and has records from before, the student could be charged as an adult and jailed if found guilty.

Dickstein said that the point is not to punish the kid; the point is to give them an opportunity. (link)
