HOLLYWOOD – Ben Affleck’s “Argo,” a film about a fake movie, has earned a very real prize: best picture at the Academy Awards.
From the White House, First Lady Michelle Obama joined Jack Nicholson to help present the final prize. “There are eight great films that have every right, as much a right to be up here as we do,” Affleck said of the other best-picture nominees.
In share-the-wealth mode, Oscar voters spread Sunday’s honors among a range of films, with “Argo” winning three trophies but “Life of Pi” leading with four.
Daniel Day-Lewis joined a select group of recipients with his third Oscar, taking the best-actor trophy for his monumental performance as Abraham Lincoln in the Civil War saga “Lincoln.”
“Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence triumphed in Hollywood’s big games, winning the best actress as a damaged soul in “Silver Linings Playbook,” while Ang Lee pulled off a huge upset as best director for “Life of Pi.”
Anne Hathaway went from propping up leaden sidekick James Franco at the Academy Awards to hefting a golden statue of her own with a supporting-actress Oscar win as a doomed mother-turned-prostitute in the musical “Les Miserables.”
Christoph Waltz won his second supporting-actor Oscar for a Tarantino film, this time as a genteel bounty hunter in the slave-revenge saga “Django Unchained.” Tarantino also won his second Oscar, for original screenplay for “Django.”
Ang Lee pulled off a major upset, won best director for the shipwreck story “Life of Pi,” taking the prize over Steven Spielberg, who had been favored for “Lincoln.” (read more)

I wanted to make this comment, just so that he is accurate as possible that Rita Wilson is NOT Colin Hank’s mom. He is Tom Hanks son from his first marriage.
But for the most part, this article is EXACTLY right. I have no problem really with a child of successful parents getting help in starting a career in the same industry. Just don’t make it seem like it is so UNFAIR when it happens in the real world too.

She looks like one of the old back up singers to Dianna Ross with that mid-life crises do. Maybe she could start practicing Where Did Our Love Go, Come See About Me or Baby Love. I’m so glad I watched “The Walking Dead” and “Axe Men” last night. The First Lady of the US giving an Oscar award is just plain tacky, especially as the Obamas have absolutely nothing to do with the film industry. It also lowers the importance/respectability of the White House.

That use of the military aides really turns my stomach–and it also bothers me that they didn’t have enough moxie to not obey the “GRIN” order.
The Vietnam POWs threw a courageous, single finger salute from the midst of a tortuous environment to make contact with the home folks. These are the “look at me” generation, “I’m standing behind the FWOTUS being a prop.” Clueless.

I think it was a link from Washington, via satellite, specifically so that the entire Oscar assembly could gaze upward in adoration toward the screen, as her beautiousness appeared suspended over the stage. In beauty. Or something.
It was a link. So we didn’t pay for her to be flown out there. We paid for the video technicians, White House security involved, remote set up, satellite time, downlinks, etc. Even if it only cost ten cents it was about 16 trillion dollars too much.

Me, neither! Saw the bit on Drudge this morning. I had to dust the garage last night so couldn’t watch.
I was glad Lee won for Life of Pi. I had all these preconceived notions as to what the movie was about and was thrown for loop when I saw it to its end. It was a very moving story, one that I certainly did not expect, and it is not a film for children … AT ALL. It’s coming out on DVD in March. Rent it, watch it, and it will stay with you for a long time.

In protest against Hollywould and its hatred for ordinary Americans, I exclusively download movies now. It’s not stealing, because I use it as a legitimate form of political expression. Sometimes, I put on the movies and leave the room, a double insult!
