The recent on-air explosion of CNN’s Piers Morgan regarding his rabid demands for severe gun restrictions would be silly if it were not broadcast on one of the most dangerous media networks around.

As written in Commentary Magazine:

[Piers] Morgan embodies an attitude that we’re seeing more and more on the left. It’s a nasty combination of supreme self-righteousness and reflexive demonization. Piers Morgan can’t accept that people of good will and decency might hold views that are very different from he does on gun control. And so it’s not enough to say Pratt is wrong; he has to be portrayed by Morgan as moronic and a moral monster. This act is lovely coming from those who from time to time, and when it’s convenient, lecture the rest of us on the importance of civility in public discourse.

But the issue is bigger than one ridiculous ideologue, much bigger.   Remember “Susan Kelly“?

Susan Kelly was brought on to the Television Screen when the Benghazi Scandal began to hit the news cycles.   As soon as evidence began to contradict the administration position, and in many cases actually show them to be lying, Fran Townsend was mysteriously banished and a “National Security correspondent” named Susan Kelly appeared on the prime time shows.

When we pointed this out, because it follows a pattern, a few people thought this was silly conspiracy theory.    “Really, why would CNN intentionally and maliciously put a person on TV just to cover propaganda for a presidential administration?   That’s silly“, they said.

Really?   Well, for those who refused to question her motivation may I inquire:  Where is she now?  Go ahead… look for a story from her, we’ll wait.

CNN WingnutCNN is of particular dangerous interest because it is used as a verification source for people framing their understanding of the world and he issues within it.   Cable TV news is a passive medium that doesn’t really foster thinking.

It doesn’t have a feature that allows you to Google every dubious statement that comes out of a pundit’s mouth in real-time.   People who sit down to watch Cable TV news may or may not be aware they are just having “ideological propaganda” fired at them – and subsequently they accept information provided without having to do any of their own thinking.

How many people do you encounter who embed these narratives without cognitive question?  More than a few I’ll bet.

Discussing the rate of depression and suicide in returning combat veterans, Ted Turner said recently (October) it was “good that more soldiers were committing suicide” than were being killed in combat.   So it really shouldn’t come as a surprise to see Piers Morgan attacking a guest who opposes his rabid ideology.

After all, CNN knew exactly who they were hiring:

May 2004 – Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan has been sacked after the newspaper conceded photos of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi were fake.   In a statement the Mirror said it had fallen victim to a “calculated and malicious hoax” and that it would be “inappropriate” for Morgan to continue […]

The photos published in the Mirror on 1 May appeared to show  British troops torturing an Iraqi detainee.

In one picture a soldier is seen urinating on a hooded man while in another the hooded man is being hit with a rifle in the groin.

Colonel Black, a former regiment commander of the QLR, said the pictures put lives in danger and acted as a “recruiting poster” for al-Qaeda.  […]

The BBC’s Nicholas Witchell said it appeared Piers Morgan remained unrepentant right to the end

“According to one report Mr Morgan refused the demand to apologise, was sacked and immediately escorted from the building,” he said.

Morgan will be replaced on a temporary basis by his deputy, Des Kelly.

The newspaper released a statement saying: “The Daily Mirror published in good faith photographs which it absolutely believed were genuine images of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi prisoner.

“However there is now sufficient evidence to suggest that these pictures are fakes and that the Daily Mirror has been the subject of a calculated and malicious hoax.

“The Daily Mirror therefore apologises unreservedly for publishing the pictures and deeply regrets the reputational damage done to the QLR and the Army in Iraq.

“The paper will continue to cooperate fully with the investigation.  (continue reading)
