Thursday Open Thread – December 6th

Tomb of the Unknown ChristmasOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

Today is St. Nicholas’ Day. He is the patron saint of children. A special prayer today for God’s young ones today.

    • stellap says:

Good morning, Mike. Always praying for the young ones, but will say a special prayer today.

How are you these days? Are there any bright spots in the job hunt? I know that can be a constant worry.

      • ZurichMike says:

Thanks for checking in. Still interviewing, although things slow down for the year. I am on Swiss unemployment, which is enough for thrifty me to pay the mortgage, insurance, groceries, utilities, gas, medical insurance, etc. Lots of irons in the fire; not are getting hot, and I will have revisit all of this in mid-January when business decision-makers are back from extended Christmas breaks.

        • Menagerie says:

My prayers are with you, Mike. I believe the upcoming year will hold good things for you!

          • ZurichMike says:

Thank you. In the interim I am getting ready for Christmas! Just tried my hand at making baklava. I even made and rolled out my own phyllo dough. Scrumptious results!

            • ctdar says:

Love baklava, have it every Christmas morning with baileys & coffee since kids were little to prepare us for the unwrapping craze!!

  6. texan59 says:

A little big-picture thinking. I know, thinking is hard for our fella’s in DC.

  7. WeeWeed says:

    “Who Elected Obama?”

“….Democrats’ winning margin seems to have come from society’s extremal winners and losers — from Warren Buffett and the Obamaphone lady — not from those still in the fight for human dignity and human rights, not from the middle classes, and not from the working poor.”

    • texan59 says:

The common thread is that they both get handouts from the gubmint. One is direct and obvious, and the other is just called crony capitalism.

  8. texan59 says:

I posted this one late in the evening last night and I thought I’d repeat for all-day consumption. A little history on the phenomenon known as Political Correctness.

    • WeeWeed says:

A must read, kids. And save it.

    • Auntie Lib says:

And for those of you who may not know the definition of political correctness:

“Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

  9. Menagerie says:

You know you need coffee when you crack your eye open and the clock says 8:75. Morning all.

  10. stellap says:

Just heard that Jim DeMint is retiring from the Senate to head the Heritage Foundation.

  11. ctdar says:

If this goes thru better not charge state sales tax on top of it…every state should fight this because each item is sold via a register in a building somewhere in a state & not in the eithernet

    • Menagerie says:

Sounds to me like they intended to create a scene at least, if not escalate to something worse, exactly like they did.

      • cajunkelly says:

Yep. He was laying out a prayer blanket in the parking lot? And what’s with the “bathing oils” all over the restrooms?

Trying to get myself in the mood for Christmas, in spite of all the commercialization.

Merry CHRISTmas treepers! May you all be surrounded by friends and family. May the joy and love shared sustain you through the year ahead.

    God Bless You All!

    • cajunkelly says:

Reminded me of a hospital in my area. Every time a baby is born there, bells ring throughout the hospital. There are plaques placed throughout the hospital explaining why the bells ring.

      • canadacan says:

This story about the babies ae bells and the hospital is so beautiful what a wonderful hospital

        • cajunkelly says:

As I’m sure a person can easily surmise, it’s a *Catholic* hospital. A secular hospital wouldn’t *dare* encourage the idea of the existence of angels. (gasp) They might lose the business of those few atheists and/or filthy progs who actually go through with childbirth instead of ripping it out of the womb limb by limb.

    • stellap says:

That’s a good one! Here’s the YouTube embedded version:

    • stellap says:

I read the notes on the YouTube version – apparently this commercial is from 1993 – it was uploaded in 2007. That makes sense; in 1993 we could still talk about angels and Jesus and God at Christmas time.

      • WeeWeed says:

Yes. Now it offends 7th century musloid filth and local liberal morons for us to celebrate anything to do with Christ. Or anything to do with simply having fun.

        • texan59 says:

Speaking of stupid sh!t. Heard today that someone left a dead pig in front of a Houston mosk. The mooslums iz offended. Just wonder though, why don’t they protest every one of our grocery stores. They all have pork chops and snausage and bacon. Have yet to see them protestin’ out front of my Kroger. What’s up with that?????

I think these will be really good, hub! A favorite of mine is molasses cookies. Easy to make too.

    • WeeWeed says:

      Ooooooooooo, those look excellent!!! :D

      • canadacan says:

Gotta save that recipe. I wish I could win the lottery and we could have a big meeting where we all could get to know each other than I could pay for everybody’s fare more cookie recipes please I love Santa thumbprint cookies personally

        • WeeWeed says:

Menagerie will get us another recipe thread going before long!! :D Yum!!

          • cajunkelly says:

I was thinkin today about making a batch of divinity. Years ago I found a never-fail recipe (yep it comes out perfect even if it’s pouring rain outside) that is cooked in the microwave.

            Good stuff!

            • WeeWeed says:

You WILL be sharing that one….. :D

              • cajunkelly says:

                Here ya go.
Note: Make *sure* you use *only* a GLASS bowl. First Christmas DH and I were together I made it using a crockery type bowl. Halfway through it overheated the microwave (blew it up) and I had to finish it on the stove top. Didn’t turn out as well.

At Christmas I use a few drops of red, green and blue food coloring in different batches.

                Never Fail Divinity (microwave)

                4 c. sugar
                1 c. light corn syrup
                3/4 c. water
                Dash of salt
                3 egg whites
                1 tsp. vanilla extract
                1/2 c. chopped pecans (optional)

Combine sugar, corn syrup, water and salt in a 2-quart glass casserole. Microwave on HIGH for 19 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes or to 260 degrees on candy thermometer. Beat egg whites until very stiff. Pour hot syrup gradually over the egg whites, beating at high speed for about 12 minutes or until thick and candy begins to lose gloss. Fold in vanilla and nuts. Drop by spoonfuls onto waxed paper.

LOL, one year I made this for the office and the guys went bonkers over it. When it got down to three or four pieces left, one of the quietest guys (which made it more funny) walked over to the dish, picked up each piece and LICKED it. He then grinned, walked away and said….ooooookay, now I can be sure there’ll be some left when I get back into the office this evening! QQ

          • cajunkelly says:

Here’s another favorite for the South re Christmas candy. I’ve tried the bourbon “twist” listed at the bottom. wunnerful! :)

FTR, down here South of the Mason Dixon we pronounce it “prah line”, not “pray line”.
And we put “puh kahns” in it, not “pee cans”.
            :) :) :)

2 cups pecan halves and pieces
3 cups firmly packed light brown sugar
            1 cup whipping cream
            1/4 cup butter
            2 tablespoons light corn syrup
            1 teaspoon vanilla extract
            Wax paper

            1. Preheat oven to 350°. Bake pecans in a single layer in a shallow pan 8 to 10 minutes or until toasted and fragrant, stirring halfway through. Cool completely (about 15 minutes).
            2. Meanwhile, bring brown sugar and next 3 ingredients to a boil in a heavy Dutch oven over medium heat, stirring constantly. Boil, stirring occasionally, 6 to 8 minutes or until a candy thermometer registers 236° (soft ball stage). Remove sugar mixture from heat.
            3. Let sugar mixture stand until candy thermometer reaches 150° (20 to 25 minutes). Stir in vanilla and pecans using a wooden spoon; stir constantly 1 to 2 minutes or just until mixture begins to lose its gloss. Quickly drop by heaping tablespoonfuls onto wax paper; let stand until firm (10 to 15 minutes).
            TRY THESE TWISTS!
Chocolate-Pecan Pralines: Prepare as directed through Step 2. Add 2 (1-oz.) unsweetened chocolate baking squares to sugar mixture. (Do not stir.) Proceed as directed in Step 3.
Café au Lait Pecan Pralines: Add 2 Tbsp. instant coffee granules with brown sugar in Step 2.
Bourbon-Pecan Pralines: Add 1/4 cup bourbon with brown sugar in Step 2.

Earth to all patriot columnists, including Canada Free Press (CFP) ones: Stop telling us what Obama is going to do and start telling us what the 60 million people who didn’t vote for Obama should do.

In spite of all the hoopla and hype there is a narrow single digit percent difference between those who voted for Obama and those who voted against him.

While it’s a frightful reality that we will have Obama running the show by dictator fiat for at least four more years, we must somehow find the way to to survive him.

If there is one thing that hasn’t changed since November 6, it’s the time tested maxim that “Where there’s a will there’s a way.”
