Here It Comes….. New Senate Rules: Simple Majority (51 votes), and Elimination of Filibuster…

Watch – Most Media portrayed Egypt’s President Morsi as overreaching his power last week and demanded he enact a constitution that protects the legislative rights of the minority….. Meanwhile this week the same media will exhault Harry Reid for his magnanimous strategy to subvert constitutional limitations as “progress”…. Just watch.

The day after the election we outlined the expectations from the next Congress, specifically what Harry Reid WOULD do.  The elimination of vote approval threshold (formerly 3/5ths or 60 votes) to a simple majority in the Senate (half plus one or 51 votes) is one aspect.   The other aspect is the elimination of minority standing completely with removal of filibuster process.

Well here we go…  and it is a shock, by golly – a shock, to Republicans.

The media will cover and protect Reid/Pelosi/Obama because they support this unconstitutional manuever.   The legacy media has spent untold hours and pages labeling the conservatives as Extremists, and Obstructionists in preparation for the progressive excuse “they had to do it, they had to change the rules” to protect the country and move FORWARD.

(Politico)  A partisan war is brewing that could bring the government to a screeching halt as early as January — and no, it’s not over the fiscal cliff.

It’s all about the filibuster.

Democrats are threatening to change filibuster rules, in what will surely prompt a furious GOP revolt that could make those rare moments of bipartisan consensus even harder to come by during the next Congress.

Here’s what Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is considering: banning filibusters used to prevent debate from even starting and House-Senate conference committees from ever meeting. He also may make filibusters become actual filibusters — to force senators to carry out the nonstop, talkathon sessions.

Republicans are threatening even greater retaliation if Reid uses a move rarely used by Senate majorities: changing the chamber’s precedent by 51 votes, rather than the usual 67 votes it takes to overhaul the rules.

“I think the backlash will be severe,” Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), the conservative firebrand, said sternly. “If you take away minority rights, which is what you’re doing because you’re an ineffective leader, you’ll destroy the place. And if you destroy the place, we’ll do what we have to do to fight back.”

“It will shut down the Senate,” the incoming Senate GOP whip, Texas Sen. John Cornyn, told POLITICO. “It’s such an abuse of power.”  (more)

Well, I guess it’s nice to have evidence that they actually still read the English language and understand the nature of the attack. It’s a little late though.

So Tom Coburn says “well do what we have to do to fight back.” Gee, don’t hurt yourself, Tom. After all, you haven’t stirred yourself to fight obama’s czars, obama’s evasion of appropriate legislative procedures, obama’s recess appointments made during periods when the Senate was not in recess, obama failing to fulfill his duties in protecting Americans in Libya, obama’s deeming obamacare passed or the failure to produce a budget for 5 years now….sure don’t want you going and snagging a finger nail or something fighting over the possibility YOU GUYS may lose the chance to talk either other’s ears off. You wanta explain why you’re ok with all of the other stuff and haven’t bothered about it? Sure you hope you don’t expect us to be impressed and stuff.

We are no longer a Constitutional Republic and haven’t been for quite awhile. And that’s been ok with Congress–until Dingy Harry threatens to cut off their internal power plays.

    Are the Democrat’s Communist’s?

  3. jordan2222 says:

Well this certainly simplifies the amendment process. 51 senators can now rewrite/revise the Constitution. What a great idea. Why didn’t someone think of this before now?

    • Jan says:

There is no reference to filibusters in the Constitution. It is only a tool and it was abused. The filibuster was installed as a “tool” in 1917 and has been used around 160 times in that period. However, almost half this number has occurred in the last 5 years. When you abuse the “tool” like a child, it must be taken away from you.

      • stella says:

You are an idiot. Advise and consent is the matter at hand here. As for abusing the “tool”, take a look at the Dems back when the Republicans held the majority in the Senate, then get back to me.

      • sundance says:

Learn your constitution. There was no constructional “filibuster rule” because the Senate was constructed around a 2/3 affirmative vote. There was also no “filibuster rule” because Senators were appointed by State Legislature.

The passage of the 17th amendment, and the 3/5 majority rule both created the need for “minority consent” or what you are calling “filibuster”.

The foolish child is the President who would think a simple majority was the ‘intent’ of the Senate.

And yes, as Stella shares, your inability to understand as such does indeed make you an intellectual gnat. Try actually reading.

      • doodahdaze says:

It does give cover for the voters. But it is all so crewed up it is hard to tell. The Senate is not what the Senate was supposed to be. Now the voters will actually have to decide.

      • stella says:

In 2005 as a senator, Barack Obama himself said that “everyone in this chamber knows that if the majority chooses to end the filibuster, if they choose to change the rules and put an end to democratic debate, then the fighting, the bitterness, and the gridlock will only get worse.”

The same year Senator Joe Biden said, “We should make no mistake. This nuclear option is ultimately an example of the arrogance of power. It is a fundamental power grab by the majority party… We have been through these periods before in American history but never, to the best of my knowledge, has any party been so bold as to fundamentally attempt to change the structure of this body.”

He called it “the single most important vote” he had cast during his three decades in the Senate.

He said “I pray God when the Democrats take back control, we don’t make the kind of naked power grab you are doing.”

Senator Harry Reid himself praised the filibuster at the time, lauding it as “far from a procedural gimmick.” It is, he said, “part of the fabric of this institution we call the Senate.”

  4. FairWitness says:

Let’s face it. A massive economic calamity is coming. The human suffering of Americans will be horrific. And those who voted for the status quo did this to us all. They don’t understand what this regime is. They’re about to find out. We are going to crash. Perhaps we can pick through the wreckage and rebuild from what’s left afterward. Socialism/Communism/Dictatorship has never been successful anywhere or anytime. This is going to fail.

  5. akathesob says:

    We are so doomed!

  6. This is now going to get real ugly real quick. What wn utter failure Reid is. He can’t play fair so he has to change the rules….nice.

Going to be a fine line between blocking and getting the blame for anything that happens to the economy. Stand firm on rules changes, but let them try a tax on the rich and own the results.

  10. C.W. Skinner says:

I pray to God almighty that Harry Reid is so stupid as to do this. PLEASE do this. Because at some future point, the Republicans (quite hopefully CONSERVATIVE Republicans, or better yet TEA Partiers) WILL be in control of the House, Senate and White house simultaneously, and then EVERYTHING can be undone all at once (Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, ObamaCare, the Tax System, Federal Regulation and “rule-making” by executive fiat).

    • Sharon says:

No. Everything would not be undone. In the interests of playing fair, the republicans will reverse the 51-vote and reset things so that the dems can rule again, even if they’re not in the majority. That’s what repubs do. Fight they do not. Cave they do.
